OK, forget about the battery saving issue when the phone is Off or in Flight Mode. BUT .... If your phone is ON, you can always by tracked ...let's say by operator.
I'm not a terrorist ,chill out.
Or maybe If alarm would power ON the phone this could be as dangerous as remotely activated bomb.

Again I'm not a terrorist !
Someone has mentioned in another thread that in P1, Sound Recorder cannot record the conversation because of .....security reasons.

Too much security for a well considered business phone, don't you think ?

I see there are too many paranoid people around...

Sony Ericsson must have thought that since the UIQ is a smartphone and any application can be installed, there could exist a security risk.

Imagine someone takes your phone while you are away from the desk, and install a hidden spy application that records phone calls. A couple days later, that same person steals the phone (or downloads the recordings) while you are away and listens to your calls.

Most phones that have recording capability, the recording is embedded in the operating system, and you can't develop applications that record while you are on the phone -- correct me if I'm wrong.

That same security concern from SE can be seen in the M600, where the lack of camera is clearly targeted for users that work in facilities that have security concerns.

This is my last post in this area .Take your piece of cyberspace back (just playing paranoia)

What's the reason of this thread? It's been discussed since 2002! Come on, get over it!

No but the basic principle has. SE do it exactly how it should be.

1. When I turn my phone OFF I want it to be OFF. Period. Especially in situations where the slightest noise from my phone would make me public enemy #1 (theatre, funerals etc.). The last thing I want is some freakin' alarm that I'd forgotten about to start sounding.

2. When I want alarms but no phone calls, I put it onto into flight mode.

3. If haven't enough battery to last the night in flight mode, I plug my phone into a charger.

What on earth is so difficult about that?

On Nokia S40 handsets calendar alarms are different and they don't sound when the phone is switched-off. ONLY the wake me up in the morning alarm sounds when the phone is switched-off. So how would there be alarms going-off left, right and centre that folk had forgotten about? I like the Nokia way, an alarm (separate of the calendar) that manages to sound when the phone is switched OFF. Works a treat. There is nothing difficult or hard to grasp about the SE way and I got used to it the second day of ownership with my P1i. Sadly that morning I slept-in because my damned alarm didn't ring! I also don't know why the screen has to illuminate the room whilst the battery is charging, that's another mild annoyance. Again on a S40 Nokia I can charge the phone whilst it is switched OFF. The screen is NOT illuminated. I find both these issues an irritation to be honest and nobody can prove to me how they are somehow 'better'.

Why the long debate over a minor Alarm thing. I dont see the point of switching off the P1i. Just set it to "offline" or something. If you are too lazy to do that then get one of those auto profile switching app to do it for you.

@mib1800: it's not that, it's the principle. And I understand it. I don't care about it but I get it. People want that. They want S40 or S60, 3rd edition. Why not buying a Nokia, then?

Also, that's possible on Symbian UIQ phones. Just set your backlight in "Device" to "power Save" after a minute and "Handheld' to "auto" and there you go-your screen will go off while idling even when charging.

@701
I remember on the P910 reading about people complaining that they used the phone as an alarm clock, and they were unable to see the time at the middle of the night because there was no setting to keep the backlight on while charging, making the P910 a lousy alarm clock.

I say:
Well, you asked for it!

Notice that you now have Radio alarms, and even the charger has a side connector to plug the headphones (antena), so you can use the P1 as a fully featured alarm clock while charging.
Keeping a light on helps you read the time at anytime in the night.

The P1 is the greatest and more expensive radio alarm clock I've ever seen!

Well,I like to keep mine at 20 procents light at nite. I am always look at it to see the time and it eats only 2 procents per night.

If I'm not too lazy to switch the phone off, why would I be too lazy to switch it offline? How does lazyness come into it? I have never left a phone on 24/7 before - I have NO need to do that. I always switch off at bedtime, except now with the P1i if it needs charging. I understand the point of flight mode if I'm on an aeroplane or hospital etc but other than that it's a pointless feature to me. If I want the phone to not accept calls I will just switch the damned thing off. Nope, nobody has yet managed to convince me that needing to have the P1i switched on in order to use the alarm is a good thing.

(This has the chance to become one of those long-running threads . . .)

It would be hard to argue that this is a "good thing". It's just the way it is. If you feel that this will turn out to be one of those things you can't get used to, then better sell your P1i and buy another phone. If you need a smartphone then steer clear of Windows Mobile devices as these behave in exactly the same way, and just pick up a Nokia S60 phone.

so if SE renamed "flight mode" to "phone off" mode you'd be happy?

Flight mode is a separate thing to switching the phone off, so if SE renamed it they would be lying.

I can - and do - live with the P1i. I'm just stating that this alarm IS a pain as far as I'm concerned. Not a deal-breaker of course and I've had many happy months with my P1i already.
