The pic on the last page looks like an empty SenseMe list.

I can't wait to see something more proper on the music player, I'd love to know if it has an Equaliser or Gapless Playback.

UI looks awesome as well, and the phone still isn't out.

Gapless Playback! I think you're onto something here.

What I'd LOVE from is ....
Music Player combining Voice & Line-In Recorder (the latter via headset jack) to be able to have "Gapless Playback" along with "Gapless Recording" with ability to tap a sw button for placing tracks during recordings. This is something the MiniDisc had that CompactDisc NEVER had and I REALLY enjoyed recording a lot of DJ mixes which later I could separate individual tracks or a FULL mix.

I think the design is really nice!
I belive you have to try it yourself to experience how good the big bright screen really is!
And also it looks nice to be able to pinch out in "homescreen-mode" to gather the widgets,
hopefully there will be alot more fancy stuff like that.
I'm waiting for a video of how it looks when you arrange the icons in the menu,
I belive the icons will float around like on the iphone.?

Engadget seems to like the hardware:

"The big question is, will they be able to keep this phone up with android"

Stupid comment, they've allready proven that. It has the latest version and there has also
appered pictures of the Arc with Android 2,4 (even though this tells us nothing). I have
talked with some friends on SE and clearly they have realised that they have to keep up
with the latest version and now they have proven it so FU all the complains. SE in my heart!!

Nice done SE, but for me to buy it there should have been a proper flash. Now it just feels like a replica of my xten

Posted by doministry
I think Arc has a nice design. Great camera and good it will be shipped with latest Android.
But again X10 will not gain all this goodness although it has similarly powerful platform to get all the latest Android FW.
But again, to be up to date you have to buy a new phone.
Looks like all over the same strategy. Shame.

Anzu turned out to be better than expected. Everything is great except that it does not support HSPA+, there is not at least 8gb of internal memory and no sign of Mediascape.

The exclusion of Mediascape really puzzled me, as in. I don't know why this feature is left out. Could somebody please shed a light on this?

Posted by smclion102
NO MEDIASCAPE but its called MEDIA [It looks like its More Advanced Version of MediaScape for me]
Watch this VIDEO YOU WILL GET ANY IDEA HOW NICE THE NEW MEDIA FEATURE IS..

First of all, no need to write in CAPS Second, the older SEs (with the A2 platform and the U series) used to have a media menu, however this one is quite different from it.

@smclion102

You do not have to educate me about the Media player on Xperia Arc. I knew about it and I had already seen it. What my question is why SE did not include their own customized media player!

As far as I know, this media app your talking about is the native media player of Android 2.3 not an improved version of Mediascape!

Rog? Anyone?

Seems to be a pretty great device The media menu looks promising and I hope it has an automatic setting for the flash and not the stupid solution that`s on the x10 Mini jack on the side is imo a bad solution and I`m not to happy with the concave back.

Posted by HYPER-X10
Personally I love the shape of the Arc.

If the concave back bothers you, it's at least good to know that when someone makes a battery upgrade for it it will probably be flat. Kind of cool really. It would still be quite thin, but possibly over 2000mah

I agree that this is something Sony Ericsson could do better. Having the latest Android version is important for 2-3% of the interested consumers while the remaining 97-98% do not know the difference between 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 or they simply do not care. The thing is that these 2-3% are the tech bloggers and reviewers of mobile phones so this is what potentional buyers think is important.

The life cyclus of Android sub versions seems to be shorter and shorter, and Sony Ericsson throws in a lot of proprietary things on top of Android which needs to be implemented and tested before public release. I guess the upgrade "delay" we often hear people complain about are caused by this.

True, but what I mean is that SE allready have done it better. At the moment they announced the Arc.
Hopefully we'll stop hearing all the complains from now on.

How could it be better? You have to open separate apps just to view your photos and listen to your music instead of just one. And as you can see clearly on those pics you posted, the media is just a folder containing shorcut icons for the gallery, media player and radio so how can it be an advanced version of Mediascape? Mediascape is a single application, not a folder.

for me the new media looks catchy ... dono depends from person to person so..
but still the UI is more nice attractive

Fuuuuuuuuuck i have like 1 year left on my 24 moth deal with the x10i ... the concave design and MT is perfect for gaming (as i do quite alot at work, but without MT i can only play a few games or like 1-2 good ones)

i could buy it cash but... hmms why do they do this to me, keep suporting the x10i and not make a new one

Roq, tell me please, does it really has overclocked Qualcomm 7920 from 800 at proto to 1000Mhz, and how much score gives your samle at Neocore and qudrant. And how good is overall speed of the device.Thanks.

My thoughts exactly. Let's hope that the wizards at XDA can make a naked Android build for it when SE begins to lag some 8mths after worldwide release. Compared to the Samsung Inspire for AT&T this should do quite well. Pricing will be KEY to this devices success along with smooth/fast performance.Apps & features are there already and its fairly current in spec - top-tier that is for the Neo or something better I think.

I read somewhere that it has noise cancelling, isn't the second mic for that?

SE Xperia Arc white paper :
http://developer.sonyericsson[....]08/379/1294142899/arc_WP_1.pdf

The Sony Ericsson Xperia™ arc will be powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, and the Adreno 205 GPU will give a great graphical performance.

Nah. Don't thnk that will happen.

From Slashgear:

Sony Ericsson has slimmed down their Mediascape and Timescape elements; the former gets an optional media widget on the homescreen, while the latter is now slimmed-down and optional rather than mandatory to use. They’re also been uncoupled from the underlying Android OS, which Sony Ericsson says will allow them to upgrade the platform far quicker than on the X10 and other variants. One of the company’s 2011 priorities is to push out upgrades on a more timely basis.

Posted by Bonovox
I hope with Exmoor the camera will be better cos the x10 camera was poor imo. Looks nice with great specs and Gingerbread but I hope they improve Media Scape if they use it again. Though nice design it looks like another finger print magnet. Wish they would do a white one.

I love it's media player (large album art is really, really cool), the display, the sexiness. It's actually making noise and sensation on Twitter!

How about its camera? Has anyone got stolen shots?

If the software is the best, then don't bother about the hardware. It may be not dual-core, but it's simply irresistible.

It must be not too expensive for the company to gain profit.

Honeycomb coming to Xperia arc

Posted by Hiron
Hi, today I want to discuss about Sony Ericsson decision when selecting appropriate (a) camera module and (b) chipset for Xperia Arc…

Let’s get started with Sony Exmor R camera module…

Reference: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201010/10-137E/index.html

There are two choices of camera module. Xperia Arc are using choice number 2:
1. IMX081PQ+IU081F (16 Megapixels, 1.12μm pixel size, costs US$ 174.24)
2. IMX105PQ+IU105F2 (8 Megapixels, 1.4μm pixel size, costs US$ 114.16)

What will happen if Sony Ericsson decides to move from number 2 to number 1 choice for Xperia Arc?

Pro:
- We can get theoretically twice amount of details
- Sony Ericsson will create more hype, especially for average user, simply because the megapixel myth is not widely known yet

Con:
- Due to smaller pixel size, we can get noisier and darker image
- The thickness of Xperia Arc on the bulk side could be increased roughly 2.23mm (although it will be the same for the thinnest side), because of the thicker lens module
- The production costs of Xperia Arc will be raised roughly about US$ 60.08
- In overall daily usage, it’s overkill and doesn’t increase the user experience to wide margins.

Now let’s move on to chipset choice…
TI OMAP, Samsung, Tegra 2 or ST-Ericsson chips seems out of question because of different driver/kernel/bios/low-level commands and it would cost and timed more to develop new low-level boot loader software platform from the scratch… There are only two logical choices for Sony Ericsson at the moment. Keep in mind that Xperia Arc is using number two:

1. MSM8660 (Adreno 220 GPU, dual-core 1.2ghz)
2. MSM8655 (Adreno 205 GPU, single-core 1ghz)
3. MSM7230 (Adreno 205 GPU, single-core 800mhz)

Some insiders have thinking about MSM7230 chipset, but it doesn’t sound logical in marketing point of view, because although it’s still faster than QSD8250 due to GPU, average users would think it’s slower because of the cpu clock alone (1000mhz vs. 800mhz). So to keep the hype, Sony Ericsson needs to keep it at least 1 GHz.

What will happen if Sony Ericsson decides to move from number 2 to number 1 choice for Xperia Arc?

Pro:
- We can get theoretically twice amount of processing power with relatively same battery consumption, and it’s critically needed in some tasks or CPU-hogged emulator, such as PSXDroid (Playstation Emulator for Android).

- We can get theoretically twice amount of graphical performance (Adreno 220 vs Adreno 205) which is needed in some games and plays important role in UI transition smoothness (just look at iOS UI smoothness vs Android UI smoothness). For example (assuming it had exact same software configuration), you will get 50fps Neocore in Adreno 205 and 100fps Neocore in Adreno 220. Native hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0 is also a bonus.

- We can get 1080p Full HD native hardware-accelerated Video Playback and Recording, as opposed to 720p in current Xperia Arc.

- We can get 16 Megapixels camera in Xperia Arc. I know it sounds strange, but MSM8655 used in Xperia Arc only support up to 12 Megapixels camera due to I/O bandwidth limitation, while Sony Exmor R only have 8MP and 16MP as stated above… MSM8660 support up to 16 Megapixels camera… This is probably the main reason Xperia Arc used only 8 Megapixels…

- We can get 1280x720 screen resolution, as opposed to WVGA (854x480) in current Xperia Arc. Only MSM8660 support 1280x720 screen resolution…

- Sony Ericsson will create more hype, especially for average user, simply because dual-core 1.2 GHz sounds more powerful than single-core 1 GHz.

Con:
- The production costs of Xperia Arc will be raised roughly about (I dunno)
- In overall daily usage, it’s overkill and doesn’t increase the user experience to wide margins.

I know Sony Ericsson had thought about all Pro and Con stated above (even more, because they’re not stupid)… And I believe they even had two different prototypes with (1) dual-core MSM8660+16mp and (2) single-core MSM8655+8mp… But after careful consideration and costs calculation, they decided to stick with number (2).

But really, if they change a plan to number (1) and adding front camera, it will shut off most of SE Troll’s mouth out there. They added another mistake by not providing latest chipset technology to date. They already providing latest chipset with X10 when it’s announced, so why not do the same with Xperia Arc, the supposed high-end X10 successor?

But anyway, despite of these shortcomings, Sony Ericsson still does a great job. They fix their past mistake with X10 by sticking to latest android version and hearing another SE troll’s feedback (such as multi-touch, mediocre call volume, so-so LCD screen and camera quality). Their phone design team is something that we must appreciate about, and they still consistent with Software UI user-experience plan that they started a long time ago.

My opinion? Kudos to Sony Ericsson!

Why?

Because Xperia Arc will be my next phone.

I'll guess SE is going to use ST Ericsson U8500 platform for dual core phones and as far as I know it's not ready yet. So instead they use the newest single core CPU which is good enough. The snapdragon Xperia Arc uses doesnt support resolutions above 12 megapixels so I dont think that was really an option to go for the 16.4 megapixel sensor.

I had the same question in my mind... A closer look shows that only the battery cover is Dark Blue and the front is Black...

Anybody else observed the SAME?????

I do wish though on their Android devices would change the blue background to the menus It just starts to look bland when it's just blue all the time.

Can't wait to see how it feels in the hand, 117g is next to nothing for a phone that big.

Why is it such a big deal with no front camera?? Who uses them??

Posted by goldenface
It's always nice to have the choice; people in general like to have more features on their phones to play with as opposed to less.

Posted by snoFlake
Have to say it does look very nice and stands out in the crowd of other launches. More importantly it does look as if it's going to release in a timely fashion certainly enough to keep it relevant previously a massive stumbling point for SE. It's a shame it doesn't seem to have a front cam ironically after all these years of having them but no use/demand for them now with the introduction of Facetime and the simlplification and the introduction of Honeycomb it does look as though video-calling maybe about to take off - I kno I kno I can't believe it's taken Apple to make users figure it out either (again). But for once this looks to be really the only major niggle the others are judgement calls - now all that remains is the price point, there's lot's of competition I hope Sony don't have their Vaio pricing head on if they have input.

Posted by goldenface
Overall, I think it's a well balanced phone. Slim phones are very much in and it's also launching 'soon' with Gingerbread. Mmmmm, tasty!

Posted by argiriano
Silver is definitely my choice... it`s weird but when I look at it I have the same impression with what I had when I saw flat TV for the very first time.

And if Arc is going to be released at the end of March we may have 2.4 on board as well.

FROM DEVELOPER WORLD

As mentioned, one cool feature of this smartphone is its integrated support for ANT+ technology. This means that you will be able to use the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ arc with a large number of commercial health and fitness products. For example, you can use your phone with a heart rate monitor, pedometer, or both, when you are out running.

There are number of different ANT+ enabled sensors and devices available in on the market today. In addition to a large number of ANT+ supported apps to collect, analyze, compare and share your data in various ways. These devices and apps can turn your Sony Xperia™ arc into a main hub for fitness and health activities, as well as for communication and entertainment.

It's not that I don't believe that they are gonna update the Arc to next versions of android, but I highly doubt if it will be honeycomb. The interface is just too tablet-like and doesn't seem fitting for phones....

What I got from the article was an acknowledgement that they made a mistake by not launching their phones with the latest version of Android, so whether it's Honeycomb or Ice-cream, I don't think too many people will be bothered as long as they don't leave it too long before they do update.

A very nice phone indeed. The design is amazing. Its Vivaz all over again. Ugly in the spyshots but f***ing beautiful in real life and promotional pictures. Funny how outdated iphone design and even x10 feels in comparison in rogs video. Someone described it as a concept phone made real and I really agree. Good job SE! Silver arc will be a nice birthday present for myself :
