Hehe. I bought a pack of screen protectors from Carphone warehouse when i picked up my memory card.

I am finding i enjoy using the stylus more for writing messages and stuff, and the screen protector is showing a lot of scratching.
The phone screen is fine underneath, tho.

So, I cant tell if the phone screen picks up scratches easily, cos mines been covered from day 1, but what i can say is

DONT GET SCREEN PROTECTORS FROM CPW. Theyre crap.

Anyone recommend some good ones?

I was hoping for the invisible shield to be announced soon for this phone.

Yowza!

Just checked ZAGG's Home page.

X1 full body shield is listed at $24.95.

Just need to get 1 shipped to UK now.
Happy Chappy.

Found out Zagg ship overseas, so just ordered. £20.42, with fast delivery to UK.

Hmm, do you think that a screen protector is necessary? Anyone got scratches on their screen yet?

What do you people do your screens?! I've had a number of P-Series phones, and I've never used a screen protector.

I've had my X1 for almost 3 weeks, and my screen is absolutely fine. The only thing you need to do is wipe it from time to time, as you can't avoid that.

@The-Mont

I work in the Landscaping/Building industry, and some form of protection is essential for my phones.
I am always finding sand/grit makes its way into my pockets, and i have to carry my phone, as we are regularly making/receiving calls accross noisy sites, etc.

Although i have always kept my phones in cases, scratches are inevitable in this environment.

Trust me, Flip phones are impractical in my job!

So.. . . . . . Hoping the invisible shield does what it says on the box, and my X1 will remain as good as new.

Hi everyone,

I need a bit of help.

I seem to have two issues with my X1 at the moment.

The first, is that it seems to have the worst signal in a phone I've ever had. My phone before this was a P1, and I've had 8 other SE phones since I've lived in the same house. My signal on the X1 just keeps going, and then it takes up to half a minute for it to even find the signal again. Are there any settings that might be affecting it at all?

Finally, I am having some problems with picture messages. Everyone I have received makes the picture enclosed absolutely tiny. It's just a very small square in the middle of the screen. I've looked at the settings and tried changing the picture size to VGA and leaving it as original size also, but everytime I receive one its always the same tiny size. I know it's not the other persons phone because I tried to send one to myself as well, and it has done the same thing.

Any ideas?

Playing around a bit with me phone, as you do, and was wondering. . . .
should i be able to sens and recieve files between PC and X1 using Wi-Fi?

X1 connects with my wireless router, fine, but i dont see anything else happen.

Now, I am totally new to Wi-Fi, so please be tolerant. Do i need to pair the devices, like Bluetooth, or have i to set up a network connection in Vista, or something else?

Any info/help mucho appreciated.
Thanx.

EDIT Just had a go under Vistas network window, add a wireless device, and it doesnt find the X1, even tho the X1 says its connected to the router.
Any suggestions, or derisive laughter at my ineptitude welcome.
Thanx.

I just tested MMS with my X1 and my girls W810.
i recieve photos, etc fine, and at full size, she recieved a .gif fine from me at same file size sent.

Mine is a CPW 02 but unbranded X1.

Think there was some discussion about this on xda developers X1 forum, but i cant remember the details, sorry.

Guys, do you all know does the X1 has a "ctrl" button on its keypad??? Cas I wanted to multi-select, it seems that I cannot do it...For eg, choosing many songs from a list and ommitting some in between...

Use Shift

@s32bauer

mine works fine - fits to screen. Are you running a branded firmware? have you changed any of the settings at all?

Posted by masseur
@tai020381, there's no ctrl key on the physical keyboard so y9ou have to use the ctrl key on the virtual keyboard if you want to select multiple files that are not next to each other

No, you have bluetooth and USB for that..

X1 connects with my wireless router, fine, but i dont see anything else happen.

What exactly do you expect to happen here ?

Browse the web, check your e-mails, IM your buddies, etc and enjoy

If "dont see anything else happen" means that you are unable to perform any activities, you may check if 'mac filtering' is enabled in the firewall settings of your router. If yes, you'll have to enter the mac address of your device in the mac filtering table of your router.

Thanks for the reply. That will probably save me hours of p*s*ing about, determined to try and find a way to make it work.

It was just one of those thoughts that Microshaft might have made something like this possible, but then, why would they.

Cheers, and stay happy.
EDIT: Just had a look at the router settings, and Bingo! You have definately saved me some hair pulling. Thanks.

Have done.

Apparently I've to contact Microsoft as it must be their problem since there is nothing wrong with the Network or the handsets internet connection.

I think this is likely to be the final nail in the coffin of the X1 for me (unless SE Vodafone and co get their act together) how on earth could a phone be released with such a defect? Also who would you go to next ? they don't build it! HTC? they wont want to know! what a mess, and guess what the person who paid good money is STILL left with the problem typical

I am so glad I chose not to rush into the X, especially when I see some of the Symbian devices Nokia have got in the pipeline

Just a short time ago when I had connection problems on my N95, turned out to be a network problem.

It's all working now.

I emailed our sales lady & explained that a colleagues SIM worked but mine did not & they are on the same price plan. Explained I can't see how it can be a handset problem. It's either a SIM or a Network problem in my view.

She agreed, contacted a higher level in technical, asked them to compare the settings for the two SIM's and they found that, think it was APN was not active on mine so they switched this on.

Ten minutes later and it was fixed.

Thanks to all here for the pointers too.

Wasn't a defect, I posted later on that it turned out to be some idiot in Vodafone technical that did not have a clue what he was talking about.

I kept saying to him that since the handset would not even let me try and connect it would be a lot like buying a phone from them, trying to call 999, getting a phone error, then being told to ring the emergency services about it as it must be their problem. He didn't seem to get it though.

One email to the lady in sales, she agreed looked into it further and turned on APN or something like that.

Now I just need to get connected to our Exchange Server!

Hi all,

Well re the issue of bad signal strength i didn't really notice great signal strength but as i didn't keep or use it for very long i can't really comment one way or the other.

However i have seen this compliant on various web forums from quite a lot of users although it doesn't seem to effect all users over @XDA there is this post which suggests it is a hardware defect and will be fixed in January make of it what you will.

Signal reception isn't perfect, but I'm getting 2 or 3 out of 3 bars most of the time.

Posted by SE-Naz
I have found the reception to be on par of my C902...

I get 2/3 in my house... which is normal and at work mostly full...

Just to make it clear I have the network set on GSM... and only switch to 3G when I need it to preserve battery.

Guys I need a help..

Just deleted "Radio Panel" и "Media Panel" panels (((((. Where I can download them?

Posted by mobman
The reception issue is a worry - but i think my x1 on o2 performs on par with my p1. If anything the 3g signal in my house is slightly better. On my P1 it was about 50/50 if i would have a 3g signal in my house - with the x1 its almost 100%.

I admit that i haven't really been out into any rural areas yet - but if this issue had not been brought to my attention i would not have noticed.

Somebody on the xda thread wrote that they thought it could perform worse on different bands? I'm not sure what networks use what bands - but this could explain the difference between my experience and the experiences of others...

I've now managed to get the MMS settings sorted, and it's now showing the images full sized.

One thing I was going to ask is if there is a way to set up folders within Media Player. The reason is that I have quite a lot of videos. For some reason they don't show when you go to Pictures and Videos, they only appear in File Manager or when in Media Player. The problem is that in Media Player it puts all the videos in one long list. Does anyone know if you can set folders up within it?

Posted by Jah
The reception on Vodafone is better on my Nokia E90 then on the X1 - but my E90 has had 3 firmware updates and its signal performance has improved after each update. So we should expect the X1 to improve.

Posted by SE-Naz
It would be great if you could tell us how you fixed the MMS problem...

In the Media Panel you can't make any folders that I know of you... Have you tried in My videos... to create a SUB, however I doubt it will work as it will show up in 1 place just like music does...

The panels interface, unlike all the others, is there to give you the choice of All of them!

I have , thanks to the people over at XDA, who are improving the original concept from SE, Both SPB, TouchFlo3D also, as everyone else has, Win Mo Today screen al running reasonably happily together.

What i'm trying to say is, I HAVE THE CHOICE AT MY FINGERTIP, at any time.

To expand, if i really wanted, there is no reason i couldnt install Winterface as well, and any thing else that comes out.

No other phone, that i know of, at present, can give you this choice.

The defence rests its case.

Thank you.

I wouldn't be able to acomplish what I want if it were backwards: Instantly fast but capable of only few things.

Complex software needs avanced hardware. At the present WM is one small step ahead of hardware In 2009 we will see great advances in hardware that will make this point of lagging moot.

But... of course, soon will have more demanding software hungry for more advanced HW an so on...

@ SE-Naz

Basically, it has something to do with the phone not being set up, or directing to the correct 'profile' with the network operator. For example, my settings were directing to the Taiwan HTC website for some reason. Because O2 didn't have these settings, it was defaulting the MMS settings to how they were when MMS was first introduced.

The solution is basically using a program like PHM Registry Editor to change the profile, so it directs to the correct details. However, as there aren't any specific Xperia ones yet, you can have it use those of another phone. In my case, I have used the N95 settings, as these are ones set up on O2.

So, in the reg editor you need to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Arcsoft MMS UA - Config - mm1 - WspHeader

There will be 6 strings in this part of the registry. You just need to edit the 'User-Agent' profile to:

NokiaN95/11.0.026; Series60/3.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1

And the 'Profile' string to:

http://nds1.nds.nokia.com/uaprof/NN95-1r100.xml

You don't need to reboot. And that should get the pics coming through at the correct size.

Hope this helps if anyone is having the same problem.

How good is the sms/mms function in WN 6.1 especially on X1? How is it compared to conventional sms in typical SE phone such as W800,W910,G900 & W902 just to name a few. Are the SE special emoticons present in WM 6.1?? Because I'm planning to change to X1 from my current G900, I'm a heavy texter & I want to know which do best. And what about music functionality, does X1 have equalizer & good bass???

@Mizzle, excellent review! Shed' good light on the Xperia in a most impartial view; except two small parts. One I'd like to critize (more like an inquiry in observation)

On 2008-11-15 19:31:43, blog.se-nse.net wrote:
The keyboard itself is quite possibly the best keyboard on a smart phone ever. That’s quite a big claim to make, but let me explain why. The build quality is fantastic; the keys feel strong and robust whilst also being easy to use. The combination of metal and this robustness gives a very satisfying feel to the keyboard. It reinforces the X1’s status and makes you feel that you are using a handset that is at the top of the range. If I had one niggle with the keys it was that the tactile feedback could have been a little stronger, but overall it was perfectly fine. When you slide the keyboard out it does so with a feeling of weight, not heaviness, but of satisfying weight that makes you realise this isn’t a cheap product quickly and poorly built, but rather a handset that has been laboured over and wants to present itself well. The keys don’t feel cramped and I was able to use it to type both comfortably and quickly. That’s one of the things that you really notice about the overall design of the handset, the hardware has been made to look and feel good, but hasn’t been forced to sacrifice usability in the process.

* I'm not sure what the keyboard feels like in the X1 and its my BIGGEST concern. Dogman has used many phones before and also has used the Blackberry smartphones - considered across users/analysts in the industry to be the VERY BEST keyboards designed. Not so much for the layout but also the "touch" feeling and tactile-travel feedback when you press the keys - how deep it travels, how the keys bounce back, and how they retain this feedback/speed/touch to the fingers over a LONG length of time. Many blackberry users are corporate users/administrators - including myself (8310) - and I'm very worried about the very FLAT looking keys on the X1. My worry is not just the tactile feedback, but also possibility of dust getting in the device just looking at the keys.

Here you can see between the E, R, T, Y keys the small gap I'm worried of dust getting into.

There has been much mention of the X1 being an ‘arc slider’ and I want to touch upon this concept. The idea is simple enough, the screen (it’s actually the screen that slides and not the keyboard) slides up in an arc away from the keyboard so that it is at a slight angle, which makes both typing and viewing the screen easier because one can hold the handset in a more natural position and be able to view the screen normally.

This 'arc slider' is quite simply the VERY BEST part of the design of the X1! It has brought back the image of has a global smartphone creator/designer. Especially with the hoopla of the P990i (that design I did love very much), and initial issues of ppl not wanting to upgrade to the P1i. I think SE lost a lot of potential sales for those that wanted to upgrade to the P1i but didn't get a special discount for owning the P990i (via retail sales slip). This time around many ppl will be a bit cautious - especially the high price this X1 demands.

Oh yes 1 more observation ....

The first thing that strikes you about this touch sensitive TFT screen is its size. The 3-inch display takes up almost the entirety of the front of the handset and is the most prominent aspect of the handset when it is closed. One aspect of the screen design that we both agreed upon was that it should have been flush with the handset casing rather than slightly recessed. This isn’t a major gripe by any means, but when you are dealing with a premium product small touches really do count. As it stands the screen is not flush, but this has no real impact on how one uses the X1, it was more an aesthetic point we were making.

Actually the screen is recessed for a specific reason! Its better displayed at wider angles and in sunlight because the glare that flush screens (HTC Touch, Touch Diamond/Pro, HD, and Blackberry Bold) suffer. Actually in your review you have proven that

All in all a great review and I enjoyed reading it and will consider your points before going on an emotional phone upgrade from my Nokia E71. Right now only the Nokia N85 & Xperia X1 are in my sites for an upgrade, I almost bought a Euro N85 - willing to suffer lack of 3G where I live.

Personally I think should have considered a lower entry price for this phone, say by about $150-200. Considering there is no TV-OUT (a silly thing that SE missed and may affect purchasers of WM Pro phones may opt for a subsidized HTC TouchPro or Touch HD). I would not have tought twice for long considering to purchase the SE when it finally launches in several channels in North America.

I'm hoping Rogers Wireless considers subsizing this phone!

Hi Prom1, very good review of the review. Here just a couple of notes
Acually, what we see in photo is not a gap it's a shadow noticible because in the last row the keys have a bit more travel ("taller").

I agree with your assesment of the recessed screen, imo that gives a more classy look to the Xperia plus a better touch response because doesn't have the extra layers.

@Mizzle
Question: Are the keys in the querty and front made of metal?

Thanks Pinguino1.

All in all I'm AMAZED that kept the 'phone' form-factor size in their smartphones and didn't deviate from this. Shocked how small vs the K850i this is.

I may just end up going for a regular phone for the next 3mths before going smartphone again. Why? Because I see no reason that the Xperia for North America - in using a new Qualcomm ship - still has the ATi Mobile video graphics chip, still has limited video recording capabilities than the K850i (I would consistently get 24-31fps video @ QVGA on it. I'm NOT going back to that when paying over $500CAN for a smartphone or any phone. Regardless of the technology infringement, I think Qualcomm should've cut all manufacturers a deal in using some of the NEWER chipsets offering more video abilities that did NOT infringe on the Broadcomm patent. However I do understand that this phone has been in developement begining 11mths ago and thus the chipset deal was struct back then couldn't have been changed & tested without overall affecting phone code performance & release date targets.

Thanks for the feedback guys, especially you Prom1.

The keyboard isn't really flat. It's slightly beveled, and while it's not really noticeable in the pictures, it sure is when you use it I'm not sure what your point was when you included Dogmann, but I wasn't initially that impressed with the keyboard. Having been used to the plastic keyboards on M600, P1 and P990, this was quite a change, but I love the keyboard nowadays. It really is very good.

Regarding the screen, sure there are some pros of it being recessed, but it collects dusts in the corners and I hate that

@pinguino1

Yes, they are in metal.
