No way SE will upgrade the OS afterwards. Just look at their past behavior and you'll see the kind of support you can expect from SE.

Posted by drgopoos
Xepria will be released with wm6.1. By the time xperia is released there will be no new handset being released with WM6.

In pic below, is the button on the left side of the X1 for changing the views between vertical and horizontal???

Looks about right. Very interesting decision SE.

It is and if you go to youtube, many of the Sony Ericsson ppl showed us that - or rather, they showed it in a way that seemed like the phone had an accelerometer.

Posted by Dogmann
@clauf

Well the Video that i saw the demonstrator clearly explained it was achieved by opening the phone in either Landscape or portrait or by pushing the button, i didn't see anyone claim it had an accelerometer

white paper states it has auto-rotate UI.
not sure if its your typical accelerometer though!

A few reporters (off of some phone site) as well as a few forumers have thought there was an accelerometer and my reaction was like: -_-"

Just to make things clear =)

But I do wish there was one - sadly that wouldn't be the case. I think it's because of Windows Mobile.

supposedly, when the OS is finished and stable, the X1 is supposed to use the front camera to detect movement, hand gestures, light and dark situations etc.

Sorry, i cant remember now where i read, or watched that clip, but it sticks in my mind.

So, unless WM6.1 was incomplete on the protos at GSM, i think we will see a later version of WM.

I dont recall any reps mentioning accelerometers, either. I would say no to that one.

Sorry my ignorance: What is a accelerometer and what is it supposed to do?

Posted by tonyitalian
accelerometer is basically a sensor tat sense how the phone is held in your hand i.e vertically or horizontally and changes the screen automatically i.e landscape or normal, like the iphone

its a hardware that detects the movement of the handset and applications cans be developed based on this to change the screen accordingly
It also has many other uses like, tilting the screen to change the menu, play games, change song tracks, etc, etc,,,,,

See the nokmote , shutup , rotate me and other applications for N95 or the accelerometer based games for iphone etc, etc

I don't know if you guys have seen this vid? It's a norwegian guy holding X1 (he doesn't say much though;-), testing some of the menu's, and showing the X1 up close (He even got the phone to "hang", showing a bluescreen with some white graphics
Not much technical info about the X1 in the vid, but u get to see the phone "up close" (front, side, back, stylus, keyboard, 3,5mm jack ++)

AND now i want my X1 in black, not silver...

the viceo clearly shows, that it was a mistake to no show this phone totally at the announcement, it would have created alot more hype if people would have seen more then the 9 panels

yes lets talk abt the color, which one would others buy??silver or black

Posted by max_wedge
black.

Anything with "X" in it has to be black

Posted by mode
I think it looks ultra exclusive in silver, but cool and mysterious in black, so I guess it's down to who you are and what you want. I like to be unique and exclusive so I guess it's silver for me

Posted by clauf
I would prefer black - all consistent look. I wish the silver one would have everything silver, not silver shell/black front keypad.

Anyway I want to bring up the User Interface conversation again. Apparently NVidia prototype runs on Windows Mobile, and they have managed to basically revamp the entire Windows User Interface into a "NVidia style one" (I don't think it looks good - just 3D gimmicks). So if NVidia managed to revamp the user interface, then I'm pretty sure Sony Ericsson can too.

A NVidia preview article can be found at Mobile-Review.

Aaaargh. please SE, WHY windows mobile? There are so many great alternatives possible.

Im alot more concerned about the UI than the OS. Customers wont care as much if it takes that extra 2 seconds to process something if it looks pretty, for example.

i disagree, i think Customers would want things to happen straight away and now have to wait on some eye candy, at first it might be cool and some thing to show off, but after a while i think it would be very very annoying.

Posted by Tigershark42
...and when do you think they buy them, AFTER 5 weeks of use? Let the iphone sales speak for themselves. Like it or not, pretty sells.

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
but with the iPhone you're not waiting for the ui to do something whilst you waiting to access a feature?

Posted by Tigershark42
The iphone is a one off product in that it is the only one to have such a unique interface. This year we will see other similar interfaces from other manufacturers, then you can properly judge. But I am saying there is no question that a good looking UI will have more impact on the average consumer than a slightly improved spec sheet.

that, i agree with.

Posted by _vAmpiRe_
On one of the early FW releases for the P990i, let you choose if you would want transition effects or not... Turning them off made the phone a lot quicker... Soo... Maybe putting in an option like that would sell a phone for cool effects, and when every friend of the owner have seen these "eyecandies", he can turn them off for more performance...
I know I would:-D

I havnt read the whole thread yet but im pretty worried that this phone is an OEM made by HTC which SE has slapped their logo and software theme on. I am the owner of an ex-htc p4350 which the store luckily accepted to take back because it had a million flaws. It was slow as HELL, wifi would always disconnect after 10 minutes no matter what network. Apps would crash several times a day.. much like an early p990, and min you that was not their first phone and it had been around for a while once i got it..

Now what makes me think that its an OEM HTC device? Well HTC are very big when it comes to Windows Mobile devices, and the X1 seems to have the proprietary HTC mini-usb port. And ive also heard rumors last year that SE will buy OEM devices from HTC. Can someone please confirm this?

The X1 looks nice on the paper but lets wait for the first review.. now, back to reading this looong thread..

Calm down mate. Last time I checked Nokia were still market leaders. Do you really think the x1 alone will propel SE ahead of them?

Posted by BobaFett
the target group of se was alwasy sthe youth, wm feature, good cams et... xperia is more a biz fone and se dotn really has a good position in that area. some will go for it, but the majority will still stick to htc or nokia symbian imo. i doubt, that even a new uiq will turn many nokia users to xperia and the same to wm users...

Actually, I'm of the view the Xperia will appeal mostly to existing WM users. It's something different while still being the WM we all know and love. Don't choke you WM haters - there are people who have positive experiences with WM you know

I don't think they will hate WM in Xperia this time. WM is not like a WinXP or Vista that are already compiled. Most of WindowsMobile's SOURCE CODE is handed to SonyEricsson where it's up to the company to tweak and optimize the OS to suit it's new Interface. Since the interface looks very different from standard WM, it's likely that SonyErricson gives a lot of focus in the UI department..

wats rong wid windows mobile??? i like it!!!
Sure its lil complicated, but its great!

Youre right! And good news is that SonyEricsson is working hard to make WMs interface uncomplicated in Xperia! I wish the Firmware upgrade path goes until Windows Mobile 7

Posted by djin
i really dont think wm6 wud be upgraded to wm7...thou it wud be great if it did.
Aneways, m not gonna get X1, gonna buy X2 or watever the next wm7 device will be

Posted by Tigershark42
agree with you 100% djin. Although, to me its more about the interface than the differences in OS, so if Paris runs the so called 'UIQ4' that we have seen 4 odd press conference images of, and it looks as great to use as these images seem to show, then I'll probably go for that. I was also hoping for more camera functions anyway.
