Yesterday I visit Mobile Phone Shop in my city. They sell S500i for about 2 weeks. When I asked them about keypad problems they said that the didnt hear about it and noone from couple of they clients who bought this phone complain about this...

Today I visit another shop. It was the same story. They cell many S500i (they are one of the first Polish shop selling this phone) and not even one phone returns with broken keys...

STRANGE...

this is what happens what you make to many phones in china.
where are the days when ericsson made phones in europe, sure more expencive for them, but much better quality.
about 5years ago not as many phones went back for repairs, today its 1 out of 5!

yes youre right...this companies dont know what they are doing. In the near future all companies in the world will be bought by china! hehe

All

I think all this problem is not going to go away for any phone tht is slim and small

honestly....did anyone of you saw the broken hinge on motorola razr (especially the 1st gen) that is a common sight too even if the casing is magnesium.

read about the recent problem in N76? I tested one for two days....cannot access 3G or GPRS of my local network (software bug)...phone keep on restarting especially when I notice my body is having high static charge.
Paint start coming apart for the battery cover because they use Nylon which is well known in industry for tough to be painted....plus a very lousy keypad ...it won't crack but it is hard to press and the side of it is wobbling

I remember SE made very robust phone ...i mean for the casing and its component....but tht was the time when they don't make or follow the slim pack.

I dont know why they need to follow the slim pack even when last year their thick phone is making money

look at Apple...they don't follow the slim pack but the make an elegant thing that make everyone head turn around.....Apple is not the first touch screen phone....motorola new Rokr launch first but with a lousy look

I think in the end....those people who run the company should think why they need to be slim....why can't they make something that is good to hold on hard rather than good to fit in our shirt or pants.

Any new broken keys, anybody... ?

If anyone who send they phone to service had it already back, and if keys are OK now?

Posted by jnnyrocket
I'm on my 3rd one now. First one went 4 days before first key break, second one went 10 days. Both prior w27.

This new one is w29 so well see if theres really been a fix after this date. Seems like quite a few people have had keys crack even after this date. Hope it gets sorted because it's a very unique phone.

A friend of mine bought the pretty S500i on Saturday afternoon, and by today (Monday afternoon) just 2 days after, ONE key is broken and another one has a small crack on it...
I called SE to report the problem, they said that broken keys is not in the warranty and that i should send it to a Service Point in order to see what they can do about it.....

I havent sent it yet, i'll propably do it the day after tomorrow, i wonder what they'll say about that problem.

Honestly, that phone is really a beautiful one, but it definatelly does not WORTH a penny for that stupid problem that occurs!!! The LEAST they can do is CHANGE the keyboard for free for the one's who have that kind of problem!!!

Posted by spikee_3D
Its a known problem in the CPW group, bring it back if you have any problems.

Posted by cely
I sent mine to SE and after 2 days of getting it 4 cracked and today (4 days) 6 cracked, I sent SE an email explaining what happened and I also said that even though I knew I could send it back again, it was going to cost me shipping charges and the fact that I was not sure if it was going to be a permanent fix.

So I'll hold and wait for them to figure it out. I don't know what else to do I love the phone and something has to be done, and SE needs to acknowledge it once and for all. We all make mistakes.

Well my third phone now has cracked two keys in just 5 days of being new, W29. I love the phone, how are these people getting ones that don't break! I want one.

Guess I will give up on this after three tries, an awesome phone plagued by this simple keypad problem, a real shame.

Posted by jnnyrocket
belialwafu, you should do a little research before posting. You would realize very quickly that there is not even a remote chance of this being "a fake" as you put it. Tool

I bet though, if you were just about to purchase one of these phones and asked about the keypad problem, they would deny all knowledge of it.

i have one, its fine, and i've only seen one come back with the problem out of about 25

Well my number 3 key has gone today. It was fine this morn as ive been keeping an eye on it. Well another return. Im gutted I sold my w850i now. This w580 was another wk29 model so colour/model/build number do not appear to make a difference. The key pads are shoddy and it appears just a matter of time if your a heavy texter. Actually Ive just checked my msg counter Ive sent 206 msg since I got this second replacement almost a week ago.

Ok, SE got back to me after I sent a complain letter saying that they were sorry but the phone had to go back if it did break again and told me to call again for an RMA, The SE person said that "it is not normal for it to happen again" so she said to put it to the attention of the supervisor "S. Flynn" in the package. But the thing is she did not send me the RMA number and the email with all the return info. I'll have to call again today, I'll keep updating.

i've had my s500i for about 3 weeks and my 6 key just cracked.
this is really irritating because i bought my phone off myworldphone.com and i'd like to replace the keypad but have no idea where to go for it

I just read a article on mobile-review.com about faults on mobile phones, Eldar writes something about the S500i BLACK:

=

The situation with the Sony Ericsson S500i buttons had been hard to foresee - it was just recently when we learned that the green paint reacted with the adhesive used for sticking the buttons onto the casing. This way, because of the chemical reaction the base of the keys simply dissolved. At the same time, the yellow edition is free of such defects.

..
But as I can see by the forum, this problem is on the W580 also? But maybe not in the white edition?

Had my s500i 4 days now, and the keys have just cracked. I've been gaming heavily on it, but still.

S500i: Mysterious Green
Production date: Wk31
From: Carphone Warehouse, UK

I'm going to take it back tomorrow and they better replace it, because the salesman who I bought it from told me that it wouldn't happen, and denied knowing about any such problem.

This is interesting, because I thought I would be safe having a phone made after 27 weeks :/

Update*

Got my phone replaced today by CPW, same batch number, we'll see how it goes...

On the plus side, if you keep the phone the keys still work just fine even if they are cracked. I've had mine for a month now with nearly every key cracked and the phone still works great. I don't really see the point of sending mine in for such a small cosmetic change.

Posted by cely
It is better for everyone that has cracked keypads to send it back, just because SE will take more notice if they get more problems. I thought the same, that if they keep working it was ok, but then SE will think is not a mayor problem. I'm sending mine for the second time this week, let's see what happens

*** SEND YOUR S500i to SE a thousand times if that's what it takes for them to fix it

Hi,
Just wanted to check in and leave my story too.
Have had my S500i for a couple of weeks. I'm no heavy user.. and don't press hard. Still I saw 3 keypads broken in the middle like som previous pictures have shown.
In my case the numbers: 2,3 and 7 are the ones broken.

Posted by cely
I just got my phone for the second time, they made me send it to a supervisor because it was "weird" that it happened a second time. It is the same exact flimsy green keyboard as before, so they have not addressed the problem at all. Are we entitled to the lemon law in this? if it breaks again I'm going to have to sell it at a big loss and get another sony ericsson (W950i is my favorite except for the whole no camera thing). People please complain to SE as much as possible so that they accept they have a huge design flaw in one of their most popular phone

The keys where fine when I sold the phone but I won't see the chap again but I just didn't have confidence in the phone. Was literally looking at it after every text I sent.

Sold the phone for £120 and decided to get the 6300 for £100 (the new white one). The ONLY reason I have deserted SE for the moment is because of the terrible build quality that SE are currently knocking out. I know the N95 is ropey but the 6300 is superbly built.

Have to say that Series 40 V3 is also MUCH better then I expected and I'm not regretting the purchase. I will be back but SE need to sort it out.

ok then. just make sure that the guy wont see you these days. hope the keys wont get broken in his hands too fast.

CPW have them...same price as the black ones.

Has there been a fix to the keys yet? Never seen it on a yellow green S500, only on the blackones.. Mine is only a week old and it has cracks allready..

Posted by *Jojo*
Not a GOOD fone to purchase I guess

Posted by tranced
It's been already said that this is due to the chemicals used in the paint(the black one).

Posted by Miss UK
I tell you one thing anyone buying these on say eBay US who needs ones one imported well they int gonnabe impressed by the keypads going like that

Posted by tranced
My bad. They said it would be fixed by the 28th or 29th week. No one has confirmed this here yet.

It has NOT been fixed, it is not the "chemicals" it's the way the keyboard works with the little silver ball joining the numbers together plus the materials are way too thin and glued in the middle. It has been happening in yellow ones (they're not as frequent as the black ones, because the yellow ones are not as popular) as well as in the W580.

I have sent my phone twice to SE (I'm on my second keyboard) and if they had figured it out it would not had happened again. I barely use this phone except to play games and receive calls, and the cracks just come out of nowhere (you normally notice them at dark because of the background light). Do not buy this phone until SE admits the problem, and if you did already send it to SE don't wait and say nothing because this will not help the cause. I have spent days researching this problem online and these are my findings.

. . . perhaps, like that of Nokia . . . QUANTITY over QUALITY

I wonder if there will be a recall on these

I really really hope so.

Posted by Miss UK
I'd like to get my hands on 1 for a week and see if the keys snapped I guess it's not possible

I think they will be recalled it all depends how many sell though it's not the most common the K750i and the K800i is

Posted by afov
I think the bottom line is that SE now seem to be concentrating on flashy looks and lights as opposed to build quality. The first w580i I had suffered from a terrible slider and I changed it straight away. As soon as I was aware of the key issue I monitored mine closely and decided to sell the phone before the inevitable happened....just looking at the way the keypad is designed you can see it was done for looks/budgets rather than durability.

It seems that both Nokia and SE are releasing various phones with dodgy build quality and firmware. I have a Nokia 6300 now which I'm happy with but I understand when these first came out they suffered from a memory card bug. It just seems that manufacturers are releasing different models every week and quality seems to be suffering in the rush to market.
