I thought I would make this into a regular feature.

What do you guys think? Anyone interested?

Also, anyone else is free to have a go. I thought it would be fun to get peoples commentary on the Winners and Losers in the sales charts at the moment

Week ending 27.10.2006

Some changes this week:

  1. Samsung D900
  2. Sony Ericsson K800i
  3. Samsung E900
  4. Sony Ericsson W850i
  5. Nokia N73
  6. LG KG800
  7. Sony Ericsson W810i
  8. Motorola KRZR
  9. Nokia 6111
  10. Nokia 6230i
  11. Nokia N80
  12. Motorola V3i
  13. Nokia 6233
  14. Sony Ericsson K610i
  15. Samsung E370
  16. Sony Ericsson Z610i
  17. Nokia 6280
  18. LG KG810
  19. Nokia N91

Sony Ericsson and Samsung are still battling it out for the top spot with both having 2 handsets in the top 5.

The Cyber-shot K800i has finally been knocked off the top spot - after a run there of nearly 13 weeks - by Samsungs super-skinny D900. Is its Crown starting to slip and will launch another hero imaging handset before Christmas to take up the baton from the K800i? We'll have to wait and see.

While the battle for Christmas No 1 commences the Walkman W850i dances up to No 4 from No 6 position last week. Will it be able to break into the top three - taking over from the W810i as the Music phone to own.

The W810i still hovers around just outside the top 6 just behind LGs Chocolate which leapfrogged it this week to the No 6 position - people seem to be loving the Chocolate.

Motos's KRZR is stuck at No8 with Moto still having only 2 handsets in the Top 20, the other being the V3i D&G variant - will this phone just never stop selling and will Moto release a Santa version for the run up to Christmas?

was just about to say you read too much mobile today...

why doesnt the tariff daddy do networks own deals and only indy?

the netorks own wipe the floor with any indy deal...

fatreg

Posted by Superluminova
yup networks are always the best place to go

and just to have input into the thread, vodafones biggest seller by a long way is the k800 followed by the w850i

oh and later this week we get the brown k800!

Posted by PeterKay
Surprising to see the N91 at the bottom!!!

Posted by silver k750i
i reakon that the k800i would be at the top for the new colours like the 007, brown and etc

Posted by goldenface
I think the K800i coloured versioned should give it a boost. Casino Royale promotion will be strong too.

Yes, the networks do the best deals by a long chalk - its difficult for the indies to match them.

Posted by Vein
Glad to see the 8800 isn't in the top 19, means it's still exclusive (to a point)

According to MobileToday that particular site is still in development so it might have that breakdown soon. However, those figures above do include Network and Indies.

Well it entered the charts at No12, moved to 6 and now No2. As long as can cope with the demand I think it will be No1 next week.

The v3i has crept back into the top 10 this week too!

Go K800i!! It's going back to number 1 I feel. W850, I expected it to be number one. Wonderful to see the Z610i in there.

That would be marvelous! Ending the year on a high would be the cherry on top after an absolutely stunning year in terms of sales. It augurs well for next year.

Posted by goldenface
People will ultimately vote with their wallets - regardless of how many features are on a handset.

Both and Samsung have undoubtedly produced the best products this year.

Nokia has an amazing 9 handsets in the top 20 yet have not had a top three phone for months - never mind a No1 seller.

Now thats saying something isn't it peeps.

Posted by Dups!
@goldenface- Slipping! That's what it says. 40 SE handsets next year means more variety and stiff competition. Sure, nokia is strong financially and has more variety but this is the start of an interesting shift in the market share war. It's going to take longer though, about 3 years I feel.
But hey, it's good to see things beginnig to happen.

Posted by goldenface
Well SE only make 3G and GSM handsets so unless it does wonders in India and Asia in general then I can't see it topping the big company. Beating Moto on its home turf will be a feat too. So SE's best bet is Europe for the No1 spot.

This message was posted from a S700i

Posted by Dups!
Well, you have to start somewhere. When I say 3 years I mean SE would've started eating into Nokia's market share. As for Motorola I do see SE taking Moto on without much difficulty. Nokia is the player to beat and it's not going to be easy at all, in fact it's tougher than it looks.

Posted by *Jojo*
Go Nokia . . . GO, GO, GO - yuhuuuuuuuuuuuuu ! Get the #1 spot, Go N73 move your arse, you can reach the TOP spot ! ! !

Posted by shaliron
Looks like Nokia is starting to lose market share, interesting to see the 6230i still there. But if this included PAYG phones, it'd be a different story

Posted by mcrosser
great to see top positions for SE

Posted by goldenface
@shaliron

Yeah, i thought it was strange seeing the 6230i there too - I wouldn't put up with a screen that size these days would you?

Nokia has a head start in the developing markets - which are massive - selling low-end phones so I think it will take a while for to catch up. Nokia has something like 75% of the market in India. has a 25% market share in China - I seem to remember reading.

Posted by shaliron
@goldenface
Wow, 25% is quite large. Bet it's similar in Australia as well. SE's got quite a large user base around here, at least 20%. No stats region specific though.

Posted by goldenface
Yeah, it seems to be doing well in se Asia too. Taiwan is a good market for it. Its surprising because doesn't make any cdma phones for your networks do they?

Posted by shaliron
Well, we don't eally have any CDMA markets anymore. Orange closed down and everyone was forced to join Three. And Telstra (our main landline provider) has CDMA for closure in 2008. Very few people are on CDMA and Telstra is baiting people to join GSM by giving rebates on phones if you hand in your old CDMA one. But now, they're pushing the NextG thing with HSDPA.

But, yeah, GSM and 3G are our major ones.

Posted by Dups!
Considering that 3 years ago SE was working on a loss and today they're doubling profits and the number of handsets released. They definitely are on the right track. Patience, good marketing and excellent products are the key.

I think they've done surprisingly well this year, considering that there were no real technical innovations created by them. Nokia did all the innovating, but SE stuck to consolidating their portfolio with mid range phones.
I guess it has worked to their favour, with the average handset price going up as well, and for Nokia it has gone down.

Next year looks to be even better for SE. Thin phones, more mass market Cybershot phones, good looking phones and there WILL be high end phones!

I'll be interested to see what it'll be like same time next year.

Thin and good looking, thats what i want to see and have been asking for these type of phones for years here at esato, really can't wait.

Posted by shaliron
@peterkay
And because they're good looking, thin and they're SE branded, they are going to sell as well.
The Z610 was nice, but it would've sold better if it were 'RAZR' thin. At least SE is catching on.

Posted by PeterKay
@shaliron, you are correct these will sell like hot cakes, especially if the features are as good as expected.

Posted by goldenface
40 handsets is a lot for ;es; to release next year - thats Nokia behemoth figures.

Lets hope we see a good return of some high tech gadgety type devices to keep us interested.

It's pretty much clear who SE's gunning for. I for one can't wait! Wonder what the worldwide rankings will look like by the end of next year. SE number 3 maybe?

Posted by goldenface
Well if people Samsung slider begins to lose appeal then might pick up the extra 8% share to take the No 3 spot. I remember reading that they are hoping for double figures soon.

Posted by Dups!
Interesting. The E900 just won't let up. I still see the k800i on top again. Disappointing for the w850i.

to be honest i hoped that the Z610i would've been a better succes because of its design. but maby they sell the wrong color, like here in belgium you can only get the black version.
samsung vs se, i gues we'll be seeing that more often during the next year. will 2007 be the year SE passes samsung?

Posted by goldenface
The W810 is still selling strong, climbing one place, though I hope the W850i isn't gonna bomb already. The N73 gets to the top 5 at last

@golden - Watch out when the Nokia N95 will be released . . . I'm certain that it will land in the TOP-3 spot mate !

Posted by goldenface
currently have a 15% uk market share having leapfrogged past Samsung just a few months ago.

With 3 phones selling better than Moto in the top ten, will it be long before they claim the UK No2 position?

Their strategy of releasing a slew of handsets for next year - possibly as much as 40 - might turn up the heat on Nokia because although Nokia has failed to have a Top 3 selling handset in the uk for a while it does have the majority share of the Top 20 best selling handsets - 7 at the last count.

2007 might just be the year claims the top spot.

Posted by PeterKay
Spot on Goldenface.

Posted by Dups!
7 nokias
5 Sony Ericssons
3 Samsungs
3 Motorolas
2 LGs
You couldn't even picture this as a possible top 20 for SE, let alone 2 in the top 5 (both former number ones). Definitely the tide is turning.
