I thought this deserved its own thread, seeing now that yamigo seems to have been abandoned.

It is much quicker than yamigo although it doesn't support yahoo IM, only msn, at the moment.

  • Check your gprs account has been set up correctly

  • Check on http://www.smartvas.com to see if your phone is compatible, if it has the My Friends option then it is.

  • register with smartvas.com. (free)

  • log on at smartvas.com with the password smartvas sends to your email address.

  • CHANGE your smartvas password to a new one (at least 6 characters long)

  • edit your smartvas profile to include your msn log in and password

  • enter the following settings in the My Friends option on your mobile

    Username - [your smartvas username]

    domain - [blank]

    password - [your smartvas password]

    server - http://www.smartvas.com/oma/imps

internet profile - your current profile eg [O2 wap GPRS].

(NB.The internet mode for this profile must also be set to WAP and not HTTP, although this does not apply to phones circa W900 onwards)

    Auto login - optional

    Allow connection - optional

  • Your mobile internet security setting might have to be set to NONE.

Once this has been set up, logging out and logging in again should allow smartvas to retrieve your current MSN contacts. On newer phones this is not required, your contacts will be retrieved automatically in a matter of seconds.

This will be a maximum of 30, so you may have to prune down your list to your most important or most popular.

Hope this helps and feel free to add an corrections/ updates.

The current list of compatible handsets is : -

Sony Ericsson F500i
Sony Ericsson J300i
Sony Ericsson K300i
Sony Ericsson K500i
Sony Ericsson K600i
Sony Ericsson K750
Sony Ericcson T206
Sony Ericsson T630
Sony Ericsson T637
Sony Ericsson W800i
Sony Ericcson V800
Sony Ericcson Z1010
Sony Ericsson Z800i

...or any with the My Friends option.

EDIT: My Friends, Smartvas, Instant messaging, IM, MSN.

Update Bump!

On older phones like the s700i, the internet setting of the phone ...

connectivity > internet settings > internet profiles > more > settings > internet

...had to be changed over to wap in order to log on to My Friends.

This had to be changed back to http in order to use Opera Mini.

This is no longer the case with the newer phones - say from W900i onwards as the phone seems to detect the change and switch automatically.

Could you not just create two internet accounts one wap one http?
That's what I used to do but I agree that you don't have to do that now.

It used hardly any data too which is good.

You could, but in Internet Profiles we can only select one or the other - not both.

@Manuel, thanks.

More info!

Most recent SE mobiles support TCP CIR, which means the Smartvas server is able to notify the client the instant a message has been received. If this is not supported your mobile will poll for messages every 30 seconds or so.

Also, regarding your Smartvas password, this has to be 6 or more characters. Users have reported problems logging in with short passwords.

Tried registering for this last night, but I haven't received an email from them yet to confirm my registration Does it normally take a while to come through?

I registered a few days ago with a hotmail address - and have yet to receive any confirmation email. I tried again using NTLWorld and received confirmation straight away.
