Hmmmm! It is black, that is my gripe, what happened to the ipod white. Sounds very promising but i doubt we will see pictures until it is released which leads me to believe that source is genuine.

Posted by vincebio
bring it on...

but ill have the rev.b thanks...

had my fair share of guinea pigging with my iMac G5 thank you...

a little birdy told me there will be 2 versions.....a Pro version with PDA etc will be the top of line, and the consumer version will be an iPod with a phone basically..

watch this space

Posted by SloopJohnB
I read that too, and also it will be available in 3 colors. Although the article said its black so i´m not so sure anymore ;/
The iphone looks really great, touchscreen smarphone with great screen, great design (apple), great software (apple) and surely big mem capacity (ipod), 3mpx cam. If apple manages to make all that and also make it totally interactive with mac os x and its apps, this will probably be one of the best phones ever made. Better than any current phone and perhaps on pair with N95

Posted by haynesycop
I agree! Really looking foward to this, should be a brilliant device, you can deifnately rely on apple to give us something good.

Posted by spikeyjac
how much does every1 reckon it will b tho

Posted by shaliron
Sounds nice, but expensive. I secretly want it to flop, just so SE can get market dominance easier

Posted by SloopJohnB
The article says that it is a black stylish device and the whole front is a touchscreen. There is gonna be two iphones too. One smartphone (probably the one with the touchscreen) and another one very slim and non-smartphone (perhaps like and ipod nano ::P:).
I think Ill be saying byebye to in the near future if they dont come out with something really special... since they are developing mid-end downgraded phones for the moment i think im already sure what my next phone will look like hehehehe

Posted by Mulder7
Hmmm I wonder where the keyboard will be then.

Posted by haynesycop
Virtual keyboard?

Hi all,
So far nearly all my equipment is Sony to be honest if this is as nice as it sounds and of course has the Safari browser this could well be my first Apple product. Will this work with windows though? or will it be Mac only?

Im sure it will work with windows too, like the ipod. It doesnt make much sense to restrain its market to mac users. Perhaps it wont work with windonws like it will do with mac os x. The article says it will be able to sync with ical, calc, probably adress book too and etc, which are mac os x apps. However, itunes is expanding its features so o dont know what extras it may bring (contacts, mails and etc) for both windowns and mac users.

Posted by shaliron
What would be the point of shutting out 95% of the market by restricting it to Macs? Microsoft can restrict it to Windows purely because it wouldn't make much difference.

I guess you guys forgot that when the iPod came out it was a Mac only device. I am sure that Stevie-boy would like nothing more than to poke a big fat hole in Billy G's Zune. I don't care how much they cost, I'm getting one.

As for SE, I am putting my M600i up on ebay. SE has demonstrated time and time again that they are not really concerned about their customers or their opinion and for sure they could not care about Mac users. For the time being I will head on over to Blokia and get either a E61, or E70. I have tried to be patient but I truly hope SE takes a nose dive and becomes an also ran.

Posted by SloopJohnB
I know the first ipod was a mac-only device, however things are different nowadays, its another cenario. Everybody knows the ipod now and a bigger number of people knows apple and more people own macs or other apple products. The mac market grew 32% this year so far. The first months of the ipod were a test. Probably the first months of the iphone will also be a test but surely many pc users will want to buy it when it comes out, thats why it would be a big restrain on provits to make it mac-only. Its a big opportunity to cash on the fame apples built with handheld devices and also crush zune, which is not a strong competitor to the current ipod and even less to the iphone which will have many other features, including a phone hehehe.

As stated above, the iPod was MAC only for its 1st 9 Months. Then after 3rd party software, non supported by Apple made it PC compatible but you had to buy the PC only iPod! Shortly there after Apple bought that company and made the iPod universal. Currently the iPod when used on a Mac STILL offers more features than it does on the WinPC machine, I dont see ppl complaining about that.

> This iPod phone has been a rumor for over 6 years, ever since the T610 debuted. Its getting LONG - OverDue and winded. I dont think with all its rumored, or analyst predictions (nobody gets inside scoop on NEW Apple products, NoBody - ThinkSecret is the closest and even with the iPod they didnt pin it all down. iTunes was a complete surprise to everyone. However, with all the hype its gotta live up to, it better give me th worlds biggest Hood-Wash (thats B.J. to those that dont know) I've EVER had.

Seriously though. I worry about Apple making a multifunction device other than a computer. iPod still is mostly an MP3 player, any other functions - other than being a HDD - is secondary and does NOT destroy any of its functions or synhronization. Every other kind of device that Apple made other than a computer failed. Let's take a look at the list shall we?

1. Digital Camera (way too early, HP wasnt even in the game).
2. N-DO or whatever it was called (Gaming sytem - CollecoVision era Nintendo & Sega were king Atari was dying).
3. Image Writer Printers (too Legacy only for Apple computers).
4. Lets us NOT forget the NEWTON. just simply too heavy & WAY TOO BIG! Powerful though it was WAY ahead of its time. Its spirit lives on though in Mac OS X. Next time you drag an icon out of the dock and you see that PUFF animation .... you guessed it. It debuted on that NEWTON!

Now dont get me wrong I love Apple's perfection, simplicity of complex technologies and features & design. I'm actually going to be switching almost full (80% - I do tech support for WinXP & 3270 MainFrame Shells) over but I worry that this iPhone (Kill that name I pray) although rumored to be feature laden will NOT live up to its hype.

Well we'll all see, wont we?!

Posted by SloopJohnB
I share the same concern. Its kinda hard to guess all the features the new iphone will have and plus where it will fit in the market and with the other ipods. And not only that but will it be that great? The last apple conference was already a big disappointment except for the iTV. Apple has made many patents this year but will they be used on the ipod or iphone? Thats why many people think thereis gonna be more than one iphone, perhaps 2, 3 exploring different markets. It makes more sense, however its a big investment for apple and it may harm the ipod sales. Will the ipod become a phone? Or become something more than media device?
There too many rumors and questions for now. However, the iphone seems real and some features have been commented by several websites like 3mpx cam, wi -fi, smartphone, touchscreen, sync and etc. So im starting to believe its real.
Since is not offering anything interesting right now or in the near future and i havent changed my w800 yet it seems that an iphone will be my next phone. Like said before, well just have to wait and see.

Not only is SE becoming boring with their offerings, they simply ignore a segment of customers dying for support, i.e. the Mac world. Those of us that have made the stupid and costly move to the new Symbian phones are dead in the water. The new phones no longer support the USB Mass Storage profile, there is no way to sync the phone to a Mac natively and to top it off, SE says its all Apples fault as Apple should supply the drivers and syncing solution. However, SE forgot to mention that they stopped supporting SyncML over BT or even IR, and now support it only over HTTP. No one uses this method anymore. There are a chorus of M600i and P990i users that are dumping their phones onto ebay and going to Nokia to get the support they need. SE shot itself in the foot over this and I truly hope this new iPhone (whatever it will be called) buries SE. They brought it on themselves.

if you pay close attention to the right hand column of the picture, it states that apple makes great computers. sony ericsson makes great mobile phones - phones that have set the standard.......

Problem is with this photoshop, it borrows from the SE Apple and Cingular announcement of iSync! Its an introduction to iSync. Those Apple icons havent been used - seperately - since 2004. iCal, AddressBook are combined not seperate entities any longer.

Take a look straight from the OS X sight for the new Tiger OS.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/ical.html

Well unless you dig with Apple's site search engine. Funny thing is SE phones, setting the standard, funny our they DONT support Address Book, something Apple would want to fix FIRST before working with SE on their OWN phone. I've heard rumors of Apple & RIM working together for a phone, that didnt pan out even against analysts predictions.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html

iphone will NOT be a remade T610 no matter how much Apple could save on Manufacturing costs. Please dont insult Apple's design engineers, they can do MUCH butter than that.

There's been talk of this phone for an eternity. Part of the problem is that every time a company files for a Patent or Trademark some tech site goes into rumor overload. Never mind that it can take upwards of 2 years to be awarded a Patent and maybe even longer to build the product (the current wait time for Patent approval is 26 months, I filed for a patent in May and that is what I was sent).

In the mean time I was shopping for a new GSM phone and was forced to buy the w810i (because there's no iPhone yet and the k790 isn't Quad-band). It's a really decent phone but comes nowhere near the level of design perfection that Apple usually builds. There are many very subtle differences that Apple considers when designing products and TONS of usability test they must go through before being released. That's what sets Apple apart from companies like Sony, Sony only gets 90% of the product done before they release it (why no quad-band on k790? why is Walkman app always orange? why a solid light instead of a flash on the w810i? why no lens cover on w810i camera? Why do I have an unremovable "PlayNow" link on the main menu that doesn't do anything? why is there a custom shortcut menu that will only let you make shortcuts to the Main Menu? In case you wanted to use more clicks to get to the same place?). It's good, just not good enough. (as a long time Apple user, I can say that no, they are not "always" perfect, just very often)

And talk of "Apple stuff is soooo expensive" is just rubbish. My w810i was $400 at an online discounter ($599 at the Sony Store) and when comparing computers, try comparing EXACT configurations, not just the cheapest of them all. Apple computers are very competitive in todays higher end computer marketplace and even cheaper than Dell in some cases. (I currently have a Powerbook and a very nice HP DV1000 as well as several Desktops from Apple and others). The difference is motivation. Apple buyers historically try to find the best computer to do the job and Windows users try to find the cheapest computer do do the job.

To each his own though, when Apple releases the iPhone, I will try very hard to resist buying it initially but I guess it depends on wether my w810i is still kicking strong. (and whether the iPhone sucks)

edit: sorry, should have stated I purchased my w810i a while back, before Cingular carried it, I couldn't wait any longer for Apple or Cingular to get a decent phone. Of course, the w810i is cheaper now.

@Rhett, well said. However your w810 is WAY too expensive. That $400 is what we paid months ago in $CAN Currency about 3 months before Cingular Wireless debuted and we got the 1GB card to boot.

> However I keep seeing mock ups for the iPhone with OSX wont happen.

Posted by SloopJohnB
im also looking forward for the iphone, just hope apple brings it as soon as possible because i currently own a w800 and my contract ends this month.

Hon Hai cops to iPhone contract
engadget

It looks like a certain little Taiwanese manufacturer is going to get a stern talking to pretty soon from our pal Stevie J.. Just last month, Han Hai (aka Foxconn) spilled the beans in regards to a 15-inch MacBook, and while of course nothing has been confirmed by the suits at Apple, that rumor has been reiterated by this juicy new iPhone story. Apparently Hon Hai has now secured a contract with Apple to manufacture 12 million mobile handsets with music player functionality, sez the Commercial Times. The phone (which sounds like an iPhone if we ever heard of one) is purportedly set to launch in the first half of next year, giving rise to hopes that Apple will announce the handset at Macworld Expo in January. As for the MacBook, contrary to the May 2007 ship date we heard for the 15-inch MacBooks earlier, Hon Hai could be delivering these things as early as next month.

Haha, oh god. Let's take it from the top;

There are a whole heap of reasons apples aren't supported. First I will preface this with an outline of platforms NOT SUPPORTED by Sony Ericsson.

Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
ANY Unix Platform
ANY Mac Platform
ANY other platform whatsoever

All that is supported is Windows XP (SP2) and Windows 2000.

What makes Mac users think they are so special and/or so hard done by? How come you complain about having an incompatible operating system when anyone who has ever owned a Mac is aware that they will have a much harder time finding compatible software?

Jesus. It's pretty obvious isn't it? I despise Microsoft, their big buggy platforms and their sloppy, sluggish software development programs that generate the most disgustingly bloated software I've ever seen, while meanwhile operating on the edge of legality in terms of monopolising the market. But that's the market position now. Less than 10% of the market is Macintosh. Here, it's more like 4%. You are NOT being shortchanged as a consumer!

Get over it.

First off when you speak about market adoption/market share of a platform please be specific to the market. Last qtr, during the Macworld event Apple had numbers from an investment firm stating that market share for the US went UP to 5%. I forget the firm so I cannot confirm, I'm sorry for that.

Two > BOTH of you are wrong.

Since the first inception of Mac OS 10 well 10.2.7 iSync support SE phones (T616 up to the P910) over BT for FULL sync! do a search on Apple.com for phones supported and you'll see (full sync I may be wrong but almost complete sync). S60 2nd Edition phones ALMOST ALL where from the Ngage to the 6620 to the N90! those had FULL sync abilities including pictures - ones user specified. Linux Desktop OS or even Unix doesnt have 5% of the US marketshare. Remember Linux & UNIX are mostly 80% worldwide used in a server environment for business as apposed to desktop by the end user. Rememeber the MacWorld with SE & Apple & Cingular annoucing sync abilities?!

MS was already proven an illegal monopoly but we all know how many US states backed down like chickens (after getting on MS secret private payroll) and they didnt even do anything except a "small" (by M$ coffers size) fine. Breaking up the country was small talk for wait till stock drops 40% and BUY NOW!

Its a pain but there are xml or plist file workarounds that can resolve the issue to a bareable minimum.

Erm, where was I wrong? SE do not provide a support channel for Isync. Mac do.

The market I was citing was NZ, desktop. Never seen anyone complaining they couldn't attach their W550i to their Unix server, even if they wanted to.
