Hi from Montreal everyone,

Just thought it would be nice to have a canadian forum for SE users...Feel free to post anything about SE phones, problems, tips, infos about deals with Fido or Rogers, etc.

I like to think I have a fair amount of knowledge of GSM overall, having worked for Orange in Switzerland for almost two years, so if I can help you with something, feel free to ask.

AND, if anyone knows how to get a K700 other than on Ebay, let me know as well.

I'll start with a question : I've had my P800 for over a year now, originally purchased in Switzerland. As you know, MMS has only recently been introduced here. Sp I got everything activated, my handset is properly configured, but I get the message "unknown error" when trying to send an MMS to users from other gsm operators, candian AND worldwide, and even e-mail addresses...anyone has/had this problem? Any solutions? The geniuses @ Fido can't seem to help me...

P.S. JUST BECAUSE I KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT SE AND GSM DOES NOT MEAN I KNOW EVERYTHING. IF YOU KNOW BETTER, FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME AT ANYTIME. I AM HERE TO SHARE MY KNOWLEDGE BUT ALSO TO ACQUIRE SOME. INPUT IS VERY MUCH ENCOURAGED!

Posted by bacanito
thanks boba...although I don't know how many canadians are on esato besides prodjsxb Feel free to drop by anytime hehe...U don't have any info on my mms problem by any chance? Haven't seen this type of problem before unless there are restrictions to other networks, but then the operator would know about this....

Posted by BobaFett
Sorry, never owned p8. But its a weird problem. A fw bug maybe?

Posted by bacanito
dunno bobba, i cant say i know too much about firmware...maybe I should get started

The only canadian member I can think of besides you is fijbert but he's not very active @ the moment... About your problem: I had the same error but using an internet GPRS account (to use email) but it was due to a wrong profile setting. But you're saying your settings are correct so... :(

Posted by westmini
im a canadian member!! and also about the mms thing...rogers also recently introduced a "mms" feature...its not a true mms, but the idea sounds nice, picture messaging where you would send the picture to the receiving phone but instead of receiving the picture the receiver gets a link to where he can view it on his phone...again i ssaid it sounds nice cause IT DOESNT WORK lol i havent been able to figure out how to get it to work, ive called rogers a few times and they havent been able to help me.

Posted by bacanito
@ Krubach

Thanks for the input...well, I'm not so sure about the settings anymore...the auto setup they send is wrong, I had to reconfigure it with my friend who works for Fido (my provider) and what he gave me was different and only since then does it work...weird...and congrats on Portugal winning on sunday

@westmini
Where in Canada are you? Well, if I base myself on my previous experience with mms in europe, whenever the recipient would receive a link to a website containing the mms, it was because either the recipient was not capable of receiving it directly onto his handset (feature not activated on his account) or simply he was sending it to a user registered on another provider and the two parties did not yet have an agreement for exchanging mms. Hope this helps...

Edit: I almost forgot! Welcome to Esato!

im in toronto

and about the mms thing its not that the recipient has something not enabled, im pretty sure thats how rogers has the service set up

Posted by bacanito
never did like Rogers much
does it do that with everyone you try to send it to? pm me if you want my # to test it out...

Posted by westmini
hey, just thought id let our small canadian group here that expansys will soon be selling the K700 (july 6th) for $669.95.
This probably also means that expansys has updated other countries release but im not sure cause i havent checked that out.

nah like thats just how the service is set up, and anytime you send a photo it adds the photo you sent to this online album thats only visible by you cause you create the account under your rogers phone number

thanks for the info west

I actually have a buddy working @ Rogers, I'll tell him about this problem and see what he has to say about it...maybe there IS a solution I'll let you know if anything can be done.

@ all
Any Fido users?
I have to say I was quite pissed yesterday when I saw this...

According the to Fido website, the newest handsets to be released are two Nokias...and ugly ones too...One is the N-Gage QD and the other is a 3100...and no mention of the SE K700....I really wonder what they're thinking...

Come on, I see people are reading this, but no one's posting...

Hello, I randomly stumbled across this Esato place while trying to look some stuff up about the K700. I currently have a Nokia 7210 and am with Fido (NOT my favourite company.....grrrrrr), but am thinking about purchasing an unlocked, SIM free (whatever you want to call it) phone, and I was toying with the idea of a SE k700. The unlocked/SIM free part is rather necessary since I'll be going down to Australia in Feb for at least a year and I'd like to just be able to switch SIM cards. I'll admit, I don't really know much about the k700 other than it has some nifty features, isn't ginormously huge, and would work in Oz. Any thoughts or suggestions for my potential new phone purchase? I'm rather used to the way a Nokia is used, but I'm considering the switch over to SE since i've heard good things

ps. on a completely *random* note - would anybody happen to know why it might be that i can send sms messages to my friends in melbourne and they all get the msg, but i can only receive SOME of their replies (2 people out of 7). this is really bothering me and whenever i ask Fido they say they dont' know what's happening... grrrr

One more thing, somebody asked earlier if there's any way to get a k700 other than on Ebay..... You can get them from online mobile phone stores like mobilefly.com and celluloco.com The first is based in Singapore, the second in Miami. The prices (with taxes and delivery to Toronto) from both are just $20 apart, averaging about $840 (the other is $860 or so)...... Those are the only two places I know of.

Hope that vaguely helps =)

Hey Anna, thanks for your post.

About the K700, as you can read in this thread, expansys.com will sell you this phone for 669.95 CDN, much cheaper than your singapore and miami websites;) As far as I know, these are unlocked, or they would be much cheaper! I'm also toying with that idea, hopefully it'll stop being a game soon

http://www.expansys.ca/product.asp?code=K700

As far as your sms problem goes, no cell phone operator in the world can/will give you 100% guarantee that your sms will be delivered in another country. So, this is something that you're kinda stuck with, and Fido has nothing to do with it. I'm with Fido and I get texts from Switzerland and the U.S. on a regular basis. Where in Canada do you live? Do you have coverage trouble where you are?

i just ordered my k700i off of expansys..should be here in 6 working days

@bacanito about the fido city, it doesnt really make a difference to me because i get discounted on my mobile bill seeing as how i already pay rogers alot of money for internet, and cable. so until fido offers cable and internet, im staying with rogers hehe

Posted by Anna
Hey!

I'm in Toronto. And my main issue with Fido is that their coverage is crap. There's no signal when I'm at home, unless I position my phone in a strange way near *one* window in the house, only then do i get one bar of service if I'm lucky. And at work there's no service either (I'm on the 18th floor of a building)..... Plus, when I was out in BC a few weeks back and I went to Tofino there was only Rogers service... same with when I went to Muskoka.....(basically, whenever there's no Fido service there's always Rogers) I'd have no issues with Fido if only they could fix their service (or perhaps it's just me - maybe i live in some non-serviceable black hole)

Posted by bacanito
cool west, let me know how the transaction goes and if you have any problems with the handset. Other than that, what did it come out to including taxes? It may take me some time to get it because there's a huge delay with my tax return lol

@westmini
About Fido, I do believe there was an area where they release high speed wireless internet (iFido) in Ontario, but only in that area...Cumberland I think...anyways, if you get a good deal, thats what counts

@ Anna

Yeah, I hear you on the coverage issues..went to T.O. in march for a hockey tournament with work and the whole drive there was nada lol But in Etobicoke, didn't have any problems...If you come to Montreal though, in the city, it's very rare that you'll have coverage problems. I've always wished that some insanely rich investor would come along and fund their network expansion and I do believe that this would place Fido on top as a cell phone provider and Canada. Simply because Bell is total crap aside from their network coverage, no one wants 3 year contracts with Telus, and Rogers is just there...nothing makes them better or worst than the rest...Having worked in this business, I think that Fido's only problem service wise, is the coverage...I know it sounds like I work for Fido, but I don't lol

Posted by westmini
@ bacanito first about the cost and everything, worked out to be 707 which isnt too bad considering no provider has it yet in canada
secondly about what you said about fido's coverage..another reason i love rogers is there coverage, i regularly take the train to kingston to quebec city and i have coverage all the way. also what really impresses me is when i go out to whislter and on the drive from vancouver to whistler i have full service, even while in the middle of the mountains

Posted by bacanito
Well, there is no doubt that rogers has better coverage, and as much as I like Fido as a provider, if people ask me who they should go with, my first question if where they will be using their cell phone. I still think it's the only reason Fido will never be the top cellular provider in Canada...but you have to admit, for a company with that problem, they could be off worst. I still don't understand why Rogers doesnt do more agreements with SE for better handsets, I'm so sick of seeing ads for Motorola phones!

Posted by westmini
yeah it seems like forever since rogers released a sonyericsson phone that i actually bought (maybe thats cause it is...the t68i haha)

Posted by bacanito
curious enough, I just happened to check expansys, and the price has gone down to 654.45$ for the k700...And I thought it would only be available as of july 6th?

hey towson80,

What do you currently use?

i am in sudbury at the moment. but lived in kingston, oakville, australia for the past 5 years. i was using an old nokia cdma which worked fine. a buddy of mine was using a 900/1900 moto/nok? and he had a hell of a time, even in oakville, using it so he picked a 850/1900 band and says the reception is much better. perhaps he was just being a complainer?

Posted by bacanito
maybe so, maybe not....I take it you're using Rogers? Anyways, I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to Ontario coverage, so I'd have to check the Rogers coverage map...

Posted by bacanito
by the way, does anyone know why it's not possible to activate the receipt confirmation on sms with Fido? Is it possible with Rogers?

anyone know if the z600 will work on rogers? i know fido sells it but im outside gta and no coverage.

Happy Canada Day my fellow esatonians!

Posted by bacanito
Obrigado a lot Krubach! It's raining in Montreal though lol

Portugal is doing quite well in the Euro...congrats!

Posted by bacanito
@ towson80

I know Rogers also uses 850Mhz frequency, so I'd avise you to check with them for the coverage in your area, I checked their website, but they don't specify waht band is used in Sudbury...Most, if not all Rogers phones, are 1900/850 so I'd make sure it'll work before I buy it...

Posted by bacanito
to anyone who's interested, the K700 is 618.45$ CDN on expansys...price seems to go down whenever they re-stock...

http://www.expansys.ca/product.asp?code=K700

Posted by towson80
well looks like i might have a job in don mills area. might switch to fido and use cell for a home phone as well.. p800/p900 at 900/1800/1900... how well does it work in the GTA?

Posted by bacanito
hey man, whats up?

If you're in the GTA, I don't think you'll have any problems with Fido...their coverage problems start where that zone ends...we drove from Montreal to T.O. and there was coverage nowhere in between...You just have to see if you're gonna be outside the GTA a lot, or not...that's what I would base my choice on. I was in Etobicoke in march and got great reception Also, check their coverage maps to see where the coverate ends...

Hope this helps

i just got my k700 from expansys and its amazing!!

Posted by bacanito
Cool stuff man, how's it working for you? Any lags while going from menu to menu? Have you tried the sync with Outlook yet? And what's that I read that it comes with two covers (different colours)?

Posted by westmini
no lags yet...havent tried synching cause ive been busy playing with radio and camera lol...i got all three games, and about the two different covers...i have no idea what thats about lol

Posted by bacanito
cool, let me know how the sync goes once you've tried it...btw, the headset, does it plug into the bottom of the phone like most or is there a special jack like on the p800?

Posted by westmini
sync worked fine..although it was a bit tedious setting it up the way i wanted it...and yes the stereo plugs into the bottom, a bit dissapointing because if you lose this headset...no more radio but cool feature i never knew it supported is that because the headset is a stereo headset, when you make a call using the headset the speaker is in stereo sounds! it sounds really good...like really good lol

Posted by bacanito
thanks for the infos, west...

too bad about the headset, but not too big of a deal...but it does sound great for talking on the phone, doens't it? It's the same for my P800, people sometimes dont even notice im on my headset, or on speakerphone for that matter...

Posted by westmini
yeah its quite a funny story how i stumbled upon it also..i was listening to music when a friend called..so the radio cut out when i answered it..we spoke for a few minutes and then they guy hung up and it went back to radio...a minute later i was like...wait....that sounded really different (i hadnt payed much attention to the fact i was wearing head phones) so i called the guy back and to my surprise it was stereo sound haha

Posted by bacanito
thats something that's great about the P800, cuts from music to phone call and back. Glad to see it's the same on the k700!

@ all

What do you guys think about the Z1010? I personally love the look and it's possibilities. Although some UMTS functions such as Video Call would not be supported by networks in Canada, if it would work for the rest, I'd still probably get it...what do you guys think? There's a review in the link below(in french though)...

http://www.mobilemag.ch/tests/test.php?id=18773

Posted by westmini
no doubt about that its a nice phone..it could be better if they expanded the memory to duo pro, but who am i to complain about expanding to pro when k700i doesnt even have duo lol, if i ever move back to london im definetly going to buy myself one though..or maybe something better will be around

Posted by bacanito
seriously, gotta hate the cell phone market here in Canada lol I agree with you on the no duo on k700...i think it would've been a nice addition to that phone...especially because with mp3's and video capability, memory can go quick...But the Z1010 is just beautiful, I love the design...And I don't usually like flip phones
