Well,we don't know much yet...The W980i is code-named Maria.It will have the new touchscreen UI and will be iPhone's direct competitor.
And some rumours about it:
Maria
High end candybar. It will have a d-pad, and six buttons and no numeric keypad, with a touchscreen for most functions. Similarly or more highly spec'd than the W960i. To be announced on December,12th and released in W9/2008.
Despite there is no credible info, I assume it is based on OMAP2430 or OMAP2431.

As the W960 is the branded (Walkman) version of the P1 in specs, can we expect the W980 to be the Walkman-spec equivalent of the P5?

i think that maria will have a formfactor(better say looks) similar to the W900 (not swivel though but a slider)and in bigger dimensions and of course touchscreen!

and i expect W980 to have a 5MP... but even a perfect 3.2MP would be great ( of course with AF and flash and acceptable video recording which the iphone lacks).

absolutely is but all of these insane P5i posting started with the PK saying: i have the P5i and make ppl go crazy about it.
if w980 is going to be the P5i's pair then i dont think that it will have GPS and JAVA CDC (CDC is a version of java that lets you run advaned programs written in C++ to run on a device). as in P1i and W960i.... qwerty and java CDC go for the p1i and 8GB mem go for the w960i.
and about the camera on walkman devices:
after the legendary K750 SE decided to remove the AF and flash from most of the walkman phones and the advanced media player from the cybershots.... but high-end walkmans still have the top-notch camera... somthing like w960 compared to p1i......... even some mid-end ones still have flash and AF like W610i.
and i think if the W980 wanted to be the SE multimedia flagship... then it will need a decent camera like a P5i (as it is said to be 5MP)

The P5 will dictate whatever we see slightly later in the W980, just as the P1 did for the W960, and the P990/M600 did for the W950 before that. It will be the phone with all the innovations which shows the new direction of both the hardware platform and UIQ - the W980 will just be a slight reworking of the same ideas. As such, it's really not so interesting right now.
Once the P5 details are known, it might be time to start wondering what that means for the W980... but odds on, the P5 will still end up being the better phone. Certainly seems that way with the P1/W960.

I don't believe that for a second - the W960 is barely released yet...
If true, then the P5 will obviously be the more advanced phone, and still the one to wait for.

the W980 should never hit the market before the W960i or at the same time with it. this will effect the w960 price even when it is not on the market globaly and will ruin it's sale.
and as i said before i don't think that the W980 would have GPS and some programming features.( compared to P5)

W960i will be out this month. Maria/W980i probably late Q1 (Feb/Mar). P5i late Q2 (May/June). That sounds good. New flagship every 3 months or so for the next 6 months.

Why would they anounce a phone for release way into 2008. That will hurt Christmas sales which won't win you any friends amoung retailers. Doesn't make sense.
