Anyone knows if this GPS will use the high sensitivity SiRF Star III chip?

If it will use that, this accessory will be a really fat piece of gadget to have!!

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

May be missing some thing here but why is there a need for this it is easy to buy a good GPS receiver quite cheaply and I'm sure you will pay a premium for the SE badge although i admit i would rather see this than GPS being built in every device. Lastly the Sirf111 chip set is not the best the RFMD chip in some receivers has faster acquisition and better sensitivity so works inside i know as my Holox BT-321 has this chip and is excellent.

ok. so if you want to use gps you have to use these headphones which seems a bit strange place to put it. would think a small bt module would be better or a some fast port module like the fm transmitter which does gps would more useful....

Hi all,

OK i really don't get this it is a hard wired solution how very strange i just don't get the point of this at all now.

Can anyone explain how this works?
The SE website says it works with the W880i and K800i and many others so what do you have to do to get GPS maps on these phones then?

they'll probably start promoting some GPS java app on their website with the reciever, im gessing its gonna cost a bit (the app), gps apps arent cheap, if you have a smartphone tho, just use tomtom 5, im using it with my p990, works great.

Posted by The_Morgue
Anyone knows when this will be in the stores?

Anyone know what choset it will use?

You don't actually have to use this as a headset - the handsfree portion is detachable apparently, so it could just be a dongle on a wire.

I can certainly see some point in having it wired - it's a more dependable connection, and you don't have to leave your bluetooth on all the time. Presumably the phone actually powers the device though, so it'll still be a battery drain.

Posted by Delta 9
Mmm if I'm not mistaken the whitepaper states it uses AGPS. Kind of a downer for me.

EDIT: I'm sorry I was reading a general GPS method description posted on the development site.

They should have built the GPS receiver into the new Bluetooth watch, would make more sense than this strange headset shite.

Posted by londonlad123
Its suppose to come with wayfinder java app for navigation.

Strange solution but it seems to be aimed at people on the go rather than car navigation.

Would be great with a new google maps app.

Has anyone heard yet when this will be available please?

I think this is an unusal way of implementing GPS (and a bit of a cop out) when others are putting it directly in their phones, but I can see one advantage. With the arial outside and high up on your shirt ect, you'll get a much better signal than if it was stuck in your pocket. In a lot of situations it will be good not having to hold the phone up to get a lock (such as jogging cycling ect).

I know Q3 and wonder if is good on a car, because i will not buy a GPS just for jogging or something else.

Yea, using it in a car won't be so good as it'll look naff having the cable hanging somewhere or proped up. Not sure how it would link to the SE car holder.

Hi all,

Having thought more about it if this is using your phone battery i would think it will drain as much if not more power than Bluetooth as the receiver is constantly connecting and downloading information and picking up all the satellites battery where as using a stand alone device it just transmits the data to your device. I also don't see how this is going to work well in a car as with stand alone receiver and some Velcro on the the dash and the unit you get to choose the best position with this attached to the phone it limits it's positioning potential. Also many have complained that using Tom Tom with their SE devices the sound is not loud enough from the phone, but maybe as some have said it designed for walking. But it still seems a a very strange solution to me and am pretty sure it will cost more than a good stand alone GPS receiver IMO due to the SE branding.

Don't think power drian will be to much of an issue with thsi GPS unit. Bluetooth uses a lot more as it transmitts a signal. A GPS unit only receives a signal (from the sats) and if directly connected to phone wil use a minmal amount to pass over a wire. Agree, this sounds more of a personal GPS solution rather than a car one. If the price is right I think it could be handy as although you need to carry something extra with you, as it headphones as well a lot of people would have that with them anyway. Will be interesting to see the first review on this to see how good/bad it funtions.

A great photo review of Sony Ericsson GPS Enabler HGE-100:
http://www.planete-nokia.com/phpBB2/index.php?showtopic=44271

The price is 55-60 euro:

Posted by remirez
The 'coming soon' sta on the website has gone. Does it mean it's out there?

Posted by amorphus
And the price is changed to EUR 119,99.

the biggest problem seems to be: using navigation in a car needs lots of battery, because display is always turned on. so you better connect to the cigarette lighter adapter... however, where to get gps signal from? fast port is occupied by charging...

Posted by masseur
this GPS connector is the same as the current charger connectors that are supplied with recent phones (CST-75), so it has a pass through port allowing you to have both connecting to the phone at the same time

From HGE-100 website:

Compatible Sony Ericsson phones
K530i
K550i
K770i
K800i
K810i
K850i
S500i
T250i
T650i
W580i
W610i
W660i
W710i
W850i
W880i
W910i
Z550i
Z610i
Z710i

Is it true?
I mean some phones released before HGE-100 announced (K550, Z550, etc.) and T250 is a very low-end phone.
Isn't that HGE-100 requires a phone that have built-in GPS application in order to work?

Also, where's Z750? I believe I saw a Z750 GPS menu somewhere here on esato.

Just noticed that it's now got a UK price (£49.95), although still at pre-order:

£50 is not too bad. I am sure that it will come down in price soon too.

the phonehouse, switzerland: out now for 109 swiss francs, i.e. about €65

Posted by masseur
x1387 has them here for US$75 + $15 shipping

Posted by remirez
Has anyone found a review yet?
WOuld it work with the P1?

Posted by masseur
suspiciously, none of the SE symbian/UIQ phones are list as compatible on the product page

Posted by TomTam
I've seen it on eBay Germany today - EUR 70
As it seems - it works like a GPS antenna, sends the position in text format to the application on the mobile.
My mobile is k810i - and I bought it preloaded with some applications - one software is "navigator" - it looks like a GPS system with maps. I've also seen some similar free Java applications on the net.

after my first GPS gadget appearance, i found myself really like this things.

As I understand it you also use GPRS when using GPS for your phone. I don't want to pay money just to use the gps. Or have I totally misunderstood it? Someone with a little more knowledge kindly explain this to me

Posted by masseur
you only use gprs (or 3g data) if you use your GPS with software like google maps which need to download maps as you go.

if you buy software like tomtom then you already have all the maps loaded and so no data charges are incurred

Posted by svippe
Thanks for the quick answer. You just sold SE another product

Posted by masseur
you're welcome. I'll PM you where to send the money

so what phone will get you to use with this GPS accessory?

Posted by svippe
Hehe sure!

I'm currently focused on the W960. Seems quite nice with a touchscreen phone, getting a little sceptic though, as SE just announced selling half of their UIQ ownership to moto...

I got mine today. It's only the GPS dongle and headset in the box. No software of any kind.

The Dongle can be switched into 3 different modes:

1. GPS Only Mode (disables the headset)
2. GPS and Headset mode
3. Headset mode (disables GPS)

When I connected this device into my K850i I got a question to download the application. But there is only 2 applications. Tracker and GPS Location. But no Navigation

Only positioning and a training tracker which tells you how far you have been running or something. Was hoping for a Navigation app :S

Posted by thetmaxx
are there any navigation apps that don't use the wireless internet for data? if i add a data package, i think it will get costy with att. I'm getting the 4gb memory card soon, i don't see why a nav app couldn't be completely under even 1gb?

Posted by Marclalaland
Yea, I also bought mine a couple of days ago and the only software available to date is tracker and the sat-viewer program.

On the package and in the manual we are promised a full version of Wayfinder earth and a one-month trial version of Wayfinder navigator. Neither of those are available for download. I have sent an email to SE so have to wait and see what the answer is.

The Tracker program works perfectly though, once you have locked on to the satellites.

kinda wierd to me with all that cable. i use BT GPS (Garmin GPS 10X) paired with my W950i (installed with Garmin GMXT). i also use the GPS 10X with my W830i and W800i (works only with the java's Trekbuddy). the GPS 10X works well, its fast allright...

If you're looking for GPS software to run natively on your phones without a data connection, there's TomTom 6, and now theres Garmin Mobile. Most might prefer Garmin over TT6. I have TT6 and don't like it, it does the job however, and people who don't meddle with preferences will find it fine.

I use it with my P1i, and it will also run on M600i. Check the website for compatible versions with your phone. TT6 sells the software only version with a DVD, and this is what you'll need. The ones with the memory card won't work as the card provided is an SD version, and not M2 which is what Sony uses. You will need roughly at least a 2 gig card, if you choose to install the full america map. However, you can also choose to install just certain regions/states. The full america map takes 1 gig, and then you have an additional gig for your files.

Hope that info helps.
