ntl email to mobile

Hi there,

this is probably something very simple, but so far all my attempts to configure my mobile to receive email produce the response "server connection error" .

I had my Sharp GX29 configured to receive emails from my ntlworld.com account, but the handset developed a fault, and I had to return it to Vodafone (my mobile provider). They could not fix the fault, and so sent me a new handset - minus the configuration, which I'm now not able to reproduce.

I've now spent a lot of time being passed from one shop/helpline to another, and progressed nowhere - no-one I've contacted at ntl-Virgin or Vodafone could help. I've therefore browsed the Internet, and found this thread as the nearest topic on my problem, so I'm hoping someone may be able to assist.

The configuration I have so far is:

email address: name.name@ntlworld.com
return address: name.name@ntlworld.com

POP3 server
server name: pop.ntlworld.com
user id: name.name@ntlworld.com
password: as is
port number: (0-65535) 110 (not sure what the first part means)

SMTP server
server name: smtp.ntlworld.com
user id: name.name@ntlworld.com
password: as is
port number: (0-65535) 25 (not sure what the first part means)
authentication: off

Primary DNS: 194.168.004.100
Secondary DNS: 194.168.008.100
Connection type: GPRS

GPRS settings
APN: Internet
username: web
password: web

Any help much appreciated

Surely, this is the best place for such things.

Which first part are you pointing to ... Is it (0-65538) if yes, then it is the value the port number can take. And you try configuring other mail accounts like gmail etc. and check whether they work.

Thanks aatuif;

I've learnt a little more following your post re the port number, like a port number is valid in the range of 0 and 65535, and 0 specifies that the server should bind to any ephemeral port available (if 0 is specified, the server starts on any available port and does not use the location service daemon). But this is getting a bit technical for me.

you should check out the pop3 settings of your account, especially the inc. and outg. port numbers. I too faced such a problem with gmail, but it works perfectly now....
