Splashpower is an innovative little device which allows you to recharge all sorts of mobile gadgets without plugging them in.

ESATO NEWS

Splashpower Ltd, the world leaders in wireless power for portable devices, today announced 2 new products lines, the Multi SplashPad and the Single SplashPad.Demonstrating the scalability of Splashpower's patented Paraflux™ technology, this product range opens up the promise of wireless power to an ever greater range of applications. Splashpower has the only technology platform to deliver interoperable and universal wireless charging to the market, and is focussed on solving the power dilemma for the latest power-hungry mobile devices.

The following products will be shown to the public in a world premiere at the CEATEC consumer electronics show in Tokyo, Japan from 4-8 October, 2005.

Multi SplashPad: This flagship product lets users power multiple devices simultaneously simply by placing them on the pad surface. Mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players and digital cameras can all be powered without the need to plug in to a charger, and in no extra time.

Single SplashPad: This entry-level product will power one device at a time and is universal so will work with a range of different devices. It is slim, light and portable, and serves as a perfect entry point for OEMs who want to provide a complete solution right out of the box to consumers.

Receiver modules: Splashpower has developed receiver modules so that manufacturers can integrate wireless power capability directly into their mobile products.

Mobile Accessories: These add-on accessories enable existing mobile devices to be powered by a SplashPad. A range of accessories for popular devices such as NTT DoCoMo's FOMA 3G phones and the Apple iPod will be demonstrated at the show.

Already the company has signed a number of leading mobile phone and camera companies in early access agreements. Working with the manufacturers of these devices, Splashpower will remove the last wire in mobile devices - the power cord - enabling for the first time, truly wireless devices. www.splashpower.com

I've been wondering how long before something like this comes along... what I'd like to see is truely wireless power, kind of like 'wifi'. Just imagine how much easier it would be hoovering or mowing the lawn without a power cable in the way....

now that's unique for me.. just put on top of that pad and the phone are charging?

The concept for this had been around for a while now but i think finally we will see this in the market. Charging your phones and gadgets without wires....hopefully won't be too long before we see these bundled with phones instead of wired chargers.

oh.. it's a long time rumour and now it's for real

but how do u send suffitiont volts and electrons through the air via a controlled source? how can someone harnels a 240v of power through the air with no arch and safely put it into a device with out electricuting the user?

i say this as im doing a A level in physics

Posted by RMJ
It uses induction doesn't it? You get this type of charger already with some electric toothbrushes

Posted by strizlow800
They should put things like that all over our planet so our phones will never drain the battery again.

@axxxr

Yeah i remember this idea doing the rounds yonks ago. I never thought that we would ever see such a device. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a swift launch.

Its launching at CEATEC in Tokyo next month so we wont have to wait very long!

I really need one of these NOT, I find it so so difficult plugging the charger in the bottom of my phone, come on guys get a grip !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As RMJ says, induction - it only works at very close range. To broadcast with enough power to charge a mobile phone by induction over a distance of even several feet would probably produce an EMR field that will fry your brain far worse than any radio emmission from the phone itself!!

However, there is hope! Using broadcasting technology such as cell base stations use, where radio signals can be aimed to within a foot or so of the cell phone, it may be possible eventually to "broadcast" an induction field to within a few centimetres of the device being charged, preventing the human exposure to a high energy emr field.

Now that's an interesting idea: no more power wire to your phone.
But you have to place it on a surface which itself is wired.
And which takes far more space than a charger.
Bright idea indeed!

I can't help but think you are completely missing the point of this

I think he is!

I personally can't wait to get hold of this and get rid of my obtrusive chargers which keep getting tangled.

as a regular world and EU traveller (I'm off to Singapore and Sydney again in 2 weeks) I cry out for a universal charging solution.

I don't tend to carry wall chargers perferring instead to use USB chargers but even then there are still multiple cables to carry

when this technology matures it will be fantastic!

So your going travelling with something that is, by the looks of it at least 5 or more times bigger & will be at least 5 time heavier (as inside it will have tones of copper wire wrapped round heavy cast iron to create the electromagnetic induction) than the standard wall charger and it still has to be plugged into the mains that you still need a travel adapter for, sorry im not getting the point of this

as a bump to this topic I came across the following on How Stuff Works...

How Wireless Power Works

still haven't seen these available anywhere yet though

Hi all,
Sorry but as great a concept as this at first appears i actually agree with Nokevin and the others that think it is completely pointless. Although it is a great idea for say one or two locations on a permanent basis for travelling it is far bigger and heavier and as already pointed out you would still need adapters to plug it in for each different territory.

I really fail to see the advantage over a simple docking stand that not only powers your phone but allows connection to your PC/Laptop for syncing. Lets face it even if you don't need a docking stand a single plug and wire with a connector that you attach to the end of your phone isn't exactly hard work now is it.

The advances in Battery technology are far more interesting than this product IMO, I defiantly would not consider buying this when the equipment already comes with a charger IMHO absolutely pointless. But it's a free world well nearly so for those that find it exciting go ahead buy it and enjoy.

I too am holding out for improved batteries as this seems to be the slowest developing technology of all, but I would envisage that devices like the splashpower, if they become standard, would be available in every business hotel room the same way that some sort of broadband internet access has become available and therefore no need to carry one with you.

but even if you did carry one of these, it would only be one and not a plethora of cables and adaptors

on my recent trip home to oz for Christmas I had a whole section of my backpack that I use for carry-on just for the different charges I needed which included my laptop, 2 different phones (M600 and TyTN), my Sony Camera, my portable GPS etc etc... crazy!

I haven't seen wireless charging points like these but in theme parks (thorpe park, chessington (in the UK)) there are lockable mobile phone charging points. You put your phone in, connect it, shut the cover and enter a code and when you come back all you do is enter the code, disconnect the phone and away you go.

The simple way of doing this is by being able to control the range of the output(somehow) and then using a switch which would start with a delay of, lets say 10 secs after being switched on and then turn off after the battery is fully charged. This way when the user is nearby the device there isn't a big risk of being fried by the power.
I'm guessing this could work.

If u put your hand on it, will u get shocked?

Posted by pkzild
yea i bet this thing takes like 50 hours to charge probably

Some good news finally....Splashpower will be available to buy from July 9th.

Posted by belialwafu
do you know the price? what if my phone has a crystal case do I have to remove it? I would like to buy it...hehe

Posted by bart
question is which phones will be able to use it.
is SE going to be a pioneer and make me smile, or simply say on the side again.

splashpower is as old as the T68m, why does it take so long to lauch it while the prototype was working "perfect"

Posted by smiller55
It's amazing technology and I know we are getting much nearer the time we will acutally be able to use the technology, but the number of companies working in the space.

For those interested in knowing exactly how it work's check out the resource I found:

http://powerbyproxi.com/wireless-power/

I am assuming the technology is the same for charging a battery??
