Lets say the truth about this matter once and for all i love the p series and thats the only reason why i have stayed with uiq from p800 to 900 to 910i but i kust look at my friends fones and the apps there just blow my mind anything on the uiq is equalled and beaten by series 60 fro example play constantine or splinter cell on series 60 you will be shocked i dont know if symbian made it harder to write really nice apps on uiq or if they made series 60 better you see lots of different apps on series 60 and when u look at your uiq u just get jealous to say the truth i dont think i will buy the p990 or maybe i'll just buy it and buy a series 60 fone too cuz i get really jealous when i see games and apps ppl have on fones like even the 6600 hundred that cant be compaRED WITH the p910i its so annoying i hope sonyericcson make a series 60 fone soon cuz that'll be awesome and i wont have to go for a nokia cuz i hate nokia

That might well change soon....Nokia has releasd a UIQ phone too

@Mrao: Which nokia model runs on UIQ?
What OS does the N-Gage run on?
Posted by whizkidd
The Ngage is series 60 too...

Hehe, common guys, be serious?
It's like you try to compary a sport car to a jeep.
- UIQ is designed for touchscreen enabled phones, ie. business phones
- S60 is designed with keyboard only phones, ie enterntainment phones
(Of course both is good for both in general.)
But they use the same OS! So if a game is written for S60, it could be ported to UIQ also (and vice versa), the programmers just have to take care of the 'Minor' differences regarding the touch screen and keyboards. But there aren't any big differences in capabilities.
So, comon, grow up, and don't say that S60 (or UIQ) is better, because you saw a very nice 3d game on one of them. Don't blame nokia/se, but the programmers (or development companies), who wrote the app/game for only one of the platforms!

The Nokia 77## series are touch screen phones, does this mean they run on UIQ?
Posted by mrao
Nope ...the 7710 is Series 90... i think... Basically, the os used by the p series and nokia s60 is common... Symbian. UIQ & S60 are just different interfaces to the underlying symbian os.
Posted by mamtaj
Heh heh e the most of companies used symbian s60 and the UIQ used by only se so any thing need to say more

Nokia recently released 6708, which designed for Chinese market, is just UIQ. Does that mean the programmers will write more UIQ games?

UIQ is also used by Motorola & Benq... not just

Personally I like the uiq user interface better than the S60's. Plus there are more virus attacks on the s60 than on uiq.
Posted by ambyzown
considering the fact that a lot more devices run on series 60 compared to UIQ, I wouldn't say that S60 is more prone to virus attacks

nokia's UIQ phone is a phone from benQ i think. or another asian brand.
nothing special.
i think nokia is feeling SE's heat and will try to compete in the future before SE finnaly realize their potential and lauch more UIQ phones on the market.

Precisely the reason.... more the users... more the virii creators.. There are more viruses that affect Windows than all other OSs put together ..simply coz there are more users

@mikky n90 is using symbian os v8.1a

Which is series 60 2nd edition feature pack 3 edition (v8.1a)
The N91 and the N71 uses (will) the latest version of series 60 (Series 60 Platform 3rd Edition, Symbian OS 9.1.)

in the future symbian will get some hard competition. MS will push windows mobile on cheap phones.
some company's like evil samsung, moto, panasonic, nec, ... will push linux on mobile phones, because its much cheaper for them.
Posted by frankjwang
That's true. But very few applications are for linux. So symbian would still be No.1 in the market.

The reason why S60 has more software/games available is the volumes. Mobile software developers also has to make their living somehow, so they target their applications to the platform that sells most, ie. in this case for S60. To which one would you develop, to the platform that has 20 million potential buyers or to the platform that has 1 million potential customers?

Hehehehehe, good joke... now seriously, it's not the ONLY and probably not the MAIN reason: linux/unix machines are simply much safer. I don't want to start a flame war (altough I have a feeling that I will), but just let think about this: about 90% of the computers are running MS windows, right? The rest is unix, linux, mac osx, etc. But 99.9% of the wiruses are for windows...

Not exactly... there are a LOT of linux applications for desktop PCs, and very soon it will be very easy to port these to the mobile phones. The main problem right now, as I know, is that even the phones which run on the Linux OS does not allow the installation of other native linux applications. But as soon as this will change, a lot of the PC linux apps will be ported.

I don't think Windows or Linux pose any serious threat to Symbian on the mobile market. Symbian has the backing of Nokia's market muscles and SE's innovation. Windows and Linux are not, nor will they ever be as light and nimble as Symbian, and will always need more hardware power, battery, processor, etc.
Symbian 9, and more importantly for me personally UIQ 3, will definitely be adding something interesting to the mix to keep the Symbian platform strong.

I agree with you, especially with Nokia's recent interest in UIQ, we may begin to see an array mid range smartphones running this os.
