Analysts say Sony Ericsson’s W880 device might pose a competitive threat to Apple’s iPod going forward.

Say Analysts Dresdner Kleinwort in a research note published yesterday, the analysts mention that the appeal of Sony Ericsson as a partner to the distributors/retailers as well as service providers/operators is poised to rise significantly in the upcoming few weeks. Sony Ericsson’s W880 device might pose a competitive threat to Apple’s iPod going forward, provided it is marketed aggressively and priced affordably, the analysts say. source:newratings

Well heres my view.
Sony want your money. Apple want your money.
Sony make the walkman phones and I have a w850i its ok a few faults but it plays music, makes calls and browses the www. But it does crash and Sony will not produce generic Mac software so getting it to work with the evil itunes is a true pain.
The Ipod I have a nano is a solid simple music player, it loves itunes, I hate itunes. The ipod always works.
Conclusion at this moment is The ipod doesn't make calls so i still have to have the phone and the phone has a walkman feature SO the ipod stays at home and the W850i wins.
I hate itunes its evil, did I mention that.

funny how people here keep comparing walkman phone with iphone. the article is about walkman phone vs IPOD..

i don't see anything outstanding in the w880i except for the sleek motorolaish design...it has a pathetically measly 16 mb of internal memory & the keypad is a pain in the *ss...the w900i is the best walkman phone & the w950i is the perfect i pod replacement

What's with you Apple zealots? This is not an unreasonable analysis at all. Look an any train carriage in western Europe, and you'll find that SE walkman phones are almost as (if not becoming more) ubiquitous than iPods. IMO the SE phones are better than the iPod nano by a long way. For one phones are now becoming the all in one phone/music player/games machine/camera/organiser - why carry 2 devices when 1 will suffice? The iPod doesn't even have a radio as standard, doesn't play as many file formats, doesn't sync well with software other than Apple's, has a gimmicky scroll wheel which you get tired of after scrolling for 5 minutes , and doesn't even come with a charger for God's sake!! The Walkman V2 software on the walkman phones is superior to the software on the iPo d with the ability to instantly jump to a song title in the same way as searching for a phonebook entry (as opposed to using the touch wheel on the iPod to delicately select each letter!) I don't need to say any more - Apple are an overhyped company, and people who buy iPods these days are often those who know little about technology, and jsut want to fit in.

here's the thing, as i browse thru the phone of w880 and w850, i think w850 is far better than w880 with those available features. well of course except with the sleek design well anyway i believe that this topic is talking about the features of w880 over the iphone so i bet that w880 will not be a competitive threat to iphone and secondly, iphone is a class a phone which do not support 3rd party program so... that it! any violent reaction or comment?
On 7 Mar 17:05 erwinfromsingapore wrote
i always go for all in one gadget and if they are excellent i would buy them. one of those better all-in-one gadgets is the w880. i wish it could print LOL. the ipod is just music (and videos) that's all....w880 does everything.
On 7 Mar 12:41 pop wrote
Yes maybe they are correct, the w880 can be used as a mp3 player.. it is sleek like the ipod, has calling and messaging functions, price has not much differences. Talking about each others program is just stupid. Sony is an electronic company where as Apple is a computer company, If Sony had better software than apple, than Apple would be in a whole lot of shit. There is no comparing w880 to the iphone, i mean just look at the prices.=]

<iPods are STILL unique in what they offer>

But that's the whole point of the analysis. Just as what happened with the Walkman, the Ipod will not be unique for long.
On 7 Mar 07:46 globe wrote
yes..
iPod and walkman phone have their own uniqueness, so they're not gonna overthrow each other
On 7 Mar 04:57 Prom1 wrote
Analysts ... stock market ones are pure retards. The Walkman phone will NOT overthrow the iPod.

Windows users on iPod loose the abilities that Mac users on iPod CAN do.
> Mac users can copy their login attributes or Profile and connect to another Mac computer & load those up > even applications (should the iPod's HDD be large enough) and even load those apps that they have on their PERSONAL Mac - the environment is the same > BUT as soon as they disconnect or logout the original user of the Mac that they visited will NOT see /be able to use those apps. Remember the iPod was a HIT for MAC users FIRST before PC users> nobody ever thought to wonder why, and analysts don't study this only trends > without the reason things become trends.

Idiots, for posing such a contemplation, SE walkman phones have their place no doubt, but NOT gonna overthrow an ICON. iPods didn't overthrow the SONY Walkman, the Walkman died out from Ubiquity amongst a sea of other models and nothing was unique. iPods are STILL unique in what they offer.

how can you compare the two!? iphone is like a full blown pda with a phone built in... this SE is nice, but lacks many of the features. however if SE marketed their phones better i think they would sell many more in USA, most people here are like your phone is a Sony What? they are so caught up in having a Razor or whatever Motojunk is currently out.

Even tho I am a sony fan since my R300z (now have a w810), I have to admit that the iphone is too much of a phone, Wi-fi enabled for god sake!!! smart touchscreen, and the excellent user friendly imusic.

well there are chances...since the launch of WALKMAN i bet there has been a lil cripple in ipod sales...so in due time they can fall!
WALKMAN's got good quality...portable...and only if storage was increased....an its an all in one device!!

I don't believe this no, but although the Ipod might be number one, that is solely due to looking pretty. There are so many brands and models out there that on features and music quality are better than an Ipod.

theres only 1 product that will ever move the iPod off the top spot....and thats another iPod. Its too much of an institution
