Mobile phones as lie detectors

20 August 2004 by axxxr
Fail-safe excuses like "I'm going to be late darling; I am caught in traffic," and, "Sorry, but I have to work late at the office," could soon be things of the past because of a breakthrough in telecommunications. Welcome to the era of the cellphone lie detector.

KTF, a Korean wireless service provider, launched a service yesterday that detects emotions in a speaker's voice.
The company said, through voice analysis, a listener can figure out how truthful the speaker is. Functions include finding out the intensity of love or the degree of friendship a speaker is feeling. The system can also reportedly detect if a speaker is bored in a relationship.
To use the service, users have to log onto KTF's mobile service "Multipack" and install a program on their cellphone. A wireless Internet site contains several menu selections such as "when you think you are in love," "for beginner lovers," or "friendship test." Program installation costs are 1,000 won ($0.86); data costs are 350 won for every 30 seconds.
"If you want to know whether another person is interested in you, you can call him or her and later look at an analysis of his or her feelings," said KTF's PR director Hong Sung-chul. "Men can also tell if a woman is really shy or just pretending. The system is said to be 70 to 80 percent accurate."
