Sounds like you've got a dose of 'Antivirus Gold'. This is a very nasty one and usually has to be removed manually, although Adaware does get rid of some of it automatically. The instructions for removing it are here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.c[....]rus_Gold_or_AVGold-t22397.html

It's quite long and looks pretty scary, but it's not that bad really.

What's worse, even when you've got rid of AV Gold you'll probably find that you still have problems, particularly when you try to change your display settings or desktop wallpaper. If you do, post back here and I'll get you the fix.

Is it causing any problems? It could well be a DLL put there by a spyware programme that Windows is still looking for - the spyware may be gone but there's still a reference to one of it's files in the registry or something.

Perhaps someone could clear that up - is that DLL a proper windows file or a spyware one?

Ah, actually, just done a search on my own PC and found that file in my 'Windows/System32' folder!

I stand corrected, it is a proper windows file. Do a search on the internet, see if it is a file that can be downloaded from somewhere like Microsoft? If it is downloadable, make sure it comes from a reputable site though!

Have you still got the taskbar? If so, click start, then run then type in sfc /scannow

This checks that all of your system files are in place and not corrupted. It'll ask you for your XP disk.
