I buy a brand new Transcend 512MB MS DUO PRO card. When i insert it on my card reader my PC says "Capacity: 490 930 176 bytes 468 MB"
Where is my 512-468= 44MB ( I'm so confused this is a almost 9% lost space ((
Can you tell me what i have to do to get this "extra" 9% to 512MB ?

Thanks !

Something to do with bits and bytes, they calculate the size in bits while the computer return the value in bytes or something in this taste.

Anyway, you can't get more as it's the actual size of the MS.

Yes i know but if you're right then :
the mistake must be 2,4% not 9% (1000 * 2,4% = 1024)
Then conclusion is that: It is not a calculation error , because difference between 512 and 468 is almost 9%
Am i right ?

Another calculation:

If the card is 512MB then must be:
512 * 1024 * 1024 = 536 870 912 bytes
(MB) (KB) (B)

Is it true ?

Yes, 512MB is 536,870,912 bytes.

But memory/harddrive manufacturers calculates with 512,000,000 (or maybe even 500,000,000).

Anyway, you are still missing a few MB, but these are probably gone because of the filesystem on it.

You can check this thread, http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=95361
They also have 468MB on their 512MB MS.

I ask support@transcend.nl for answers and after a short correspondence they tell me that:

The Memory Stick is Sony's patent, they make the specification.

Sony announce 512 MB maximum storage capacity with 460 MB available.

Please reference Sony's website

http://www.sonystyle.com/inte[....]ootnotes.html#memstickcapacity

Memory Stick—û Media Storage Capacity

Available storage capacity of Memory Stick—û, Memory Stick PRO—ü, Memory Stick Duo—ü and Memory Stick PRO Duo—ü media may vary. A portion of the memory is used for data management functions. Actual available memory is: 32MB=30MB, 64MB=61MB, 128MB=123MB, 256MB=220MB, 512MB=460MB, 1GB=940MB, 2GB=1.85GB, and 4GB=3.66GB

Hopefully I helped you enough with this answer.

Maybe you can explain the people on the esato.com forum.

Yep, All 512Mb cards only actually let you store 468Mb. Its the standard for all memory cards.
