China's ZTE announced the ZTE F808 3G mobile phone, that apparently is the smallest 3G phone out there.

The ZTE F808 measures 88.5mm x 44.6mm x 22.5mm and weighs 104g.

The ZTE F808 features voice, multimedia messaging, built-in rotatable 300,000 pixel camera, video phone capability, multimedia playback and data download.

For those who can read chinese, here is the link to the ZTE F808 announcement on the ZTE Site.

Press Release:

Zi Corporation a leading provider of intelligent interface solutions, announced today that its eZiText predictive text solution is now shipping on the F808 - the world's smallest 3G handset - from ZTE Corporation, China's largest supplier of telecommunications infrastructure.

The F808 has taken the mobile telecommunications market by storm ever since it was unveiled recently at Expocomm in China. Weighing in at only 104 grams and measuring just 88.5mm x 44.6mm x 22.5mm, the F808 includes Zi's user-friendly eZiText; as well as, multimedia messaging and rotatable 300,000 pixel camera among its many features.

"As the leading suppliers of text input solutions to China and the surrounding Asian market, we are absolutely delighted that ZTE has chosen eZiText for this flagship world-leading handset," said Glen Morgan, senior vice president of global sales and marketing for Zi Corporation. "Our intuitive and easy-to-use text input solution supports not only the current market demand for text messaging but also the future revenue-generating 3G services that operators will bring to their customers."

"ZTE is proud of its position in the forefront of all mobile technologies and the development of the F808 shows our expertise stretches from network infrastructure to handsets," said ZTE senior vice president He Shiyou. "We are confident that our users will find the F808 texting solution with eZiText easy to use in their every day communication." [addsig]

why are 3g phones so big anyway? i can understand they do video calling and stuff but they should be able to make the handsets smaller. all of the buttons are spread out and they are chunky. im sure they could reduce the size a bit just by putting the buttons closer together. thats the only really bad thing i have against 3g phones.

You do have a really good point their, but i think initially why 3G phones were bigger than neccessary was for the video call feature, and because the screen was supposed to be used for watching video clips ect,the idea was to make the whole experience easier on the eyes.If the screen was small then the 3G video capabilities may not have been used so frequently.but having said that now the trend is changing and new 3G models are shrinking and are more compact. thus meaning... the 3G hardware in phones has no effect watsoeva in size or price... in maybe be as small as a micro chip... reason is why 3G phones are big.. are the extras technology stuff... like 2MP camera, Dual speakers, Big screen, etc etc... U wudnt ant a 3g phone with monochrome screen and a vga camera wud u.... yet it it possible tho... but not practical..

I think you missed the point, they actually made them larger especially in Japan to support larger batteries as they drained the hell out of normal batteries. But as they now make better batteries you will see them shrink down. Look at the Nokia 6680 that is pretty small, and we have the other up and coming versions N90 etc.

Looks like a good phone!

The phone can be small, but the screen better to be big enough for web surfing.

it's not just that batteries are improving, but that as the technology matures it also becomes more energy efficient - therefore can get away with a smaller battery (which is also better).
