Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the wireless LAN-equipped PlayStation Portable (Model Code: PSP-1000) will go on sale from 12 December. The retail price will be 20,790 yen (approx US$195).

The PSP has wireless LAN functionality as standard equipment and online multi-player gaming and game content downloads will be possible via the internet. When using "adhoc mode", up to 16 PSPs can be directly inter-linked for network play.

Non-gaming content for the proprietary 1.8GB "Universal Media Disc" (UMD) used by the PSP will go on sale from Spring 2005. Input/output interfaces include a USB2.0 port, Memory Stick PRO Duo slot, infra-red port and headphone plug.

The PSP unit is 170 x 74 x 23 mm (WxDxH) in size and weighs approximately 280 grams. Power is supplied by an internal lithium ion battery or an AC adapter. Battery life is 4 - 6 hours for game play and 4 - 5 hrs for movies (Source: Sony).

An AC adapter and battery pack are included as standard equipment.

A "PSP Value Pack" (PSP-1000K) containing the PSP main unit, a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, remote control-equipped headphones, PSP soft case and handstrap will also be available from 12 December at a price of 26,040 yen.

PSP accessories will also be available for individual purchase. Pricing is as follows: 32MB Memory Stick DUO (2,940 yen), AC adapter (3,675 yen), battery pack (5,040 yen), remote control-equipped headphones (2,940 yen), soft case & hand strap set (2,100 yen).

In addition, SCEJ also announced that Level 5 will be asked to create new RPG titles for the PSP. Level 5 created "Dark Cloud" and "Dark Chronicle" for the Playstation 2 and also assisted Square Enix with the development of "DragonQuest VIII".

You need to change the dollar sign in the topic title to usd, it stops wappers from reading the page it's on or stops them posting. Mighty impressive price there. Looks like the handheld war is on. In japan at least, the ds is out here very soon. That won't be the actual western price though.

Sorted, as you can see i can post from my phone. I noticed the battery life was measured at a certain brightness and half volume with earphones and no communications on, so multiplayer games will be less.

A little word of warning for those thinking of importing the PSP, like normal dvd's the psp disks will also be region locked so you will need to continue ordering jap games until someone cracks it.
