It appears O2 GPRS is no longer free as of 2005-08-01. O2 have just lost themselves a customer as free GPRS was the only reason I was sticking with them...
Tetris is so unrealistic.

ok, i think i may know whats going on here!

i have by the way lost the FREE GPRS too.

i think they have obviously started charging now, however, O2 have ove 15million subscribers in UK alone and the computer or program which is carrying this task cant possibly do them all at once!

so, it will start lets say, from prefix 07701xxxxxx then, 07702xxxxxx till the end!

it could take some time! and thats possibly why some of us still enjoy the free GPRS and some of us dont!

so i think sooner or later everyone would be affected!

Yav form Kent.

I suspect it's because you need proper Internet access for IM -- and o2 UK PAYG customers don't get that (not on GPRS at any rate).

You could use a dial-up (GSM) connection instead, but it would be both slow and expensive. Sorry!

I *may* have discovered a workaround

I recently (saturday 26/11/05) set up a GPRS card with a laptop for a friend , and I gave them am o2 online sim , and set up the free settings as normal , these worked for about six hours and saw some pretty constant use - however , then all of a sudden the connection stopped working (well , the connection carried on working but the traffic stopped) , Just out of interest , I took the sim out and put it in my phone , and was greeted with the message "to use o2 data services you need at least 50p blah blah yadda yadda "

Now I refuse to beleive that my Brand new sim which had been sitting in my cupboard for over 6 months had just "come up for the chop" 6 hours after opening it (some coincidence huh ? )
Consider I had never put a penny's credit on the sim at all - so how come I didn't get the "50p" message straight away ? and why did it let the data flow ?
My guess is that if I open another sim , credit it up , and then use it for GPRS only , that as long as the credit stays above 50p = I will get no 50p warning = th internet access may not stop !

This is based on the theory that they start charging on issue of the "50p" notice

Just a theory ! worth trying I suppose

( Incidently - I have had an XDA mini & an XDAII on an online contract for nearly a year now and have NEVER paid a single penny in data charges ! this is using o2's Factory settings ! - so I guess billing for data is not one of o2's strongpoints )

i think i can help.
You get 1mb FREE whether you top up or not with new o2 sims. Once you use up that 1mb you start getting the 50p warnings...
Because youve used up your free 1mb of GPRS... its stopped working.

Hi, I have just been reading everyones posts about free GPRS on PAYG and how o2 have stopped it, however i do have some info that some of you mite find helpful.

I have contract with o2 on o2 250 i have been getting free GPRS for the past 6 months. when i went away on holiday in the summer i used about 90mb in two weeks and didnt get charged anything, so have just got myself an XDA IIs and started hammering the hell out of it.

Hope this helps anyone looking for free grps, i know you have to pay monthly but if you call alot anyway its worth it!!!
