Hi Bob,

I'll try to be gentle =) It seem to depend on what firmware you are using. I've been getting reports that this workaround doesnt work with the R2A041 or the R2N001 firmware. I have been using fully (semi) functional MP3's on two R2V001 firmwares for a month now, without problems at all.

>*<<*<*11 is how you can view what firmware your phone has

> is move the joystick right
< is mover the joystick left
* is press the star key
1 is press the 1 key

R2R?

mind telling us where you are mate? I've not heard of this before?

R2V is said to be able to play files WITHOUT DRM protection as ringtone as well..... whuile R2N is siad to be the same fw but WITH DRM protection enabled....... If this is true the DRM packager would be useless. Can anybody confirm?

@Vlammetje

It's pretty obvious that the guy did a typo and instead meant to write R2A041.

Here's the situation. R2A041 will not play mp3 files as ringtones no matter what. R2Nxxx dito. R2Vxxx plays mp3 files as ringtones if - and only if - they are DRM protected.

So basically anybody in the wrong geographic loaction is screwed coz even the latest firmware will only play MP3's purchased from Vodafone live as ringtones.

Just debrand the phone, it's soooooo much easier. Did mine last week, I love MP3 ring tones. Now have 15 on my fone and making more as we speak.

Never getting Vodafone again, once my contract is up.

@Aldrew

Ever thought about the warranty issue? People who unbrand their phones will eventually have to pay the repair out of their own pocket.

Have some faith in Sony Ericsson. I don't believe there going to be releasing a phone that will break within the year, before I can upgrade. Or the next 8 mnths in my case.

Well, if anyone's in any doubt... here's my newbie two penneth worth:

My fw is R2N001. I've tried the drmpackager and no luck. I tried setting it to "Combined Delivery" and although the key appears next to the icon, it still won't let me set it as a ring tone.

So I went to a vodafone shop where they said "don't tell anyone I told you this, but try the drmpackager". Oh.

I rang phatphones and they said they can't do anything about it. If I send it to them they'll unlock it but they can't unbrand it. And flashing it (is that the term) is tricky and likely to result in a non-working phone. Oh.

All I wanted was to play my mp3s as ring tones! But having read this topic, I'd kind of like the better battery life too. The only option I can see at the mo is doing it myself. I'm sure I'm perfectly capable of doing it, but just daren't in case something goes horribly wrong. Does anyone know a shop that I can take it to in SW London or Surrey(ish)?

In the meantime, having added Vodafone to my little black book (come the revolution, mate!) I'm wondering whether I can approach this in another way.

Is it worth converting the mp3 files to another format? Or will this restriction be on all file types? (Excuse my ignorance, I'm so new to all this!) If so, can anyone recommend a program to use that will do this?

sLil (bemused)

BTW Thanks for all the great tips on this forum, guys. I was completely in the dark about why this was happening until I stumbled here.

Your firmware is old. You need R2V001. Leave your phone to a local service center (or Vodafone store) and they will update it for you!

Are you sure that they will update a phones firmware instore? I took my Voda branded phone to a store and requested the above, but was told that they don't do firmware updates. Were they just blatantly lying, or is it different dependant on location?

Depends on the stores abilities and staff i would imagine. You could always take your phone in and say that "The phone is freezing can you send it to be services and have the software upgraded"

Or just ring SE and ask them where their service agents are.
