Pagers aren't really in use anymore, except in situations like mentioned above.

Who else makes mobile phones in the US? I know Kyocera do, only found this out recently, I thought they mainly made laser printers and the like!

I did notice that Americans speak just as loudly into their mobiles as Europeans do!
I'm surprised that the American networks don't seem to be making more of an effort to push more advanced services and to provide the absolute best that they can; surely they realise that this would make them more money.

but to do that, they'll have to spend substantially large amounts of money for infrastructure. and also, since they have cdma/tdma they aren't sure what standard to use for data access. (qualcomm cdma or gsm).
almost all of the mobiles in the u.s are made in china or other places.
since most cdma phones have no sim cards, u have to get the handset from the mobile phone company... so its whatever they provide. |

@plasmadog
It seems illogical that the U.S. networks didn't agree on a standard years ago, even if it wasn't GSM, it would still have made things so much easier for them.

GSM is becoming more of a standard, now with AT&T Wireless and Cingular (who just recently purchased AT&T Wireless) migrating to GSM.
(The move to GSM started before Cingular bought AT&T though. There was no cause & effect from this purchase as far as GSM was concerned, or so it seemed.)

As far as handsets go, look at these links:
As you can see, we're offered shitty phones and charged outragous prices for them. I checked O2 and Vodafone and you're being offered (in the UK anyway) nicer, feature-rich phones at better prices.
The three links are the three GSM providers in the US. For example, the Nokia 6600 (or 6620) is pretty much the nicest handset we have available right now. And it costs like 300.00 USD! What is that shit?
Americans just won't buy nice phones because they won't use them. I spent 950.00 USD on a P900 before they were even available in the US, but still almost a year later no carrier offers this phone and I would be shocked if they ever do offer it.

AT&T had the P800 in their lineup. Only online though. But they discontinued offering it at the beginning of the year.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that. I never saw it on the site though. The best PDA phone they offer now is a Treo 600, which really doesn't compare in my opinion.

$950 is around £700! That's an awful lot of money for a P900!

Yeah, no shit. My laptop was only about 200.00 USD more.
But I really wanted a P900. If I had it to do again I would - its the best & most useful device I've had.
