Iphone 2G vs 3G in 3rd party field? |

Hi. I used a first gen iPhone for 15 months before switching to the 3G model.
First Gen iPhone plus points:
- Phone is better made. Build quality is better (especially the Sim Tray) and the phone feels stronger.
- Screen has a "whiter" display. The 3G phone has a slight yellow tint in comparison.
- Package includes a dock/stand which is not present in the 3G package.
3G iPhone plus points:
- Phone is better to hold due to curved back and a slightly wider screen.
- Phone call quality is much better. Volume is far louder for calls, ringtones and alerts.
- Headphone socket is not recessed so more plugs fir into it.
- 3G data speeds at up to 7.2mpbs dependent on network. |

I didn't know that the speaker volume was louder on 3G!
Anyway is there a way to choose GSM only instead of GSM + 3G to save battery?

Yes you can just turn off 3G in the settings, and it'll just use EDGE or GPRS instead |

If I was you, I would have gone for the 3G one. Simply because, it's newer, GPS, 3G and other things.

My actual Nokia 5800 is in a Nokia repair center because of an abnormal battery drain(24h only) it's of course under warranty,it's very simple: if they tell me ''dude your battery and phone are 100% working, we will replace none of them'' then I will surelly show my finger to nokia and sell it so I will take a Iphone 3G(used).
How's battery with iphone 3G with the 3G disabled? (GSM mode only)
My boss told me his iphone can call but not receive calls !!! Is this a known problem? |

No that isn't a known problem with the iPhone. He must either have a defective phone or something wrong with his service.
Battery life is okay. The first gen model one is better for battery simply because 3G drains more power in all phones.
You'll get over 24 hours with one and that includes using it for calls, texts, a bit of surfing and the iPod.
In terms of volume, the first gen models (US June/July 2007) had very low volume. Different firmwares came out that made the volume louder, but as the months passed Apple made changes to the actual hardware. First-gen iPhones made in 2008 are noticeably louder than 2007 models. But the 3G iPhone is even louder. |

correct me if i'm wrong isn't the 3g's battery user replaceable, while the 2g's was completely soldered on? |

And if the 3G is disabled it should run for 2 days right?
I think the 3G battery is hard to change too but it can be done by a pro,it's just not as easy as to change a battery in a Nokia or SE,the whole phone and electrical circuit should be opened, just like if you want to change the LCD... |

Not sure about the 3g battery being user replaceable, perhaps in the sense that you might be able to get it out yourself, but in order to do so you'll be voiding your warranty to remove it. Why would you want to remove it anyway??
@vegetaleb, At a push you might be able to get 2 day battery out of it if 3g was turned off. Depends on how much you're using it of course. The screen consumes a lot of power, you can also turn the brightness down so it doesnt use so much. But i wouldn't ever rely on the battery lasting 2 days.
Would it be a problem to just charge it every night? Surely easier... |

I have to say with 3G switched off... I manage 2.5 days without charging...
With 3G on... I managed 2 days without charging...
I mainly use it for calls, sms, WIFI (Approx 1HR), listening to music (2-3 HRS daily) and sometime watching TV Shows
I have my brightness set half way and the AUTO feature too... I have LOCATIONS Services OFF and only switch it on when I need to use it.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Ah fair play then, with 3g off should probably expect 2 days at least then.
I guess it comes down, again, to the fact that my handset is jailbroken, with weather widgets refreshing every 3/4 hour and also Intelliscreen on my lockscreen that gives me updated RSS feeds. My battery drains alot faster! |

It's still better than the N95 legendary battery
To return to the ringtone volume with the 3G version,is it as loud as a nokia or SE or it's still too quiet?

Yeah N95 was a joke. I had one also, and can safely say the iPhone's battery is much better than that considering the size of screen etc.
The iPhone 3G speaker is actually pretty loud, as loud as you can expect from a mono speaker. I've never thought it was too quiet. Even if it's in another room you can still hear it ringing etc fine. |
