Ericsson's platform department, which makes the hardware to Sony ERicsson and other mobile phone makers, has introduced a new platform, U500. U500 has 15-MP camera, advanced drivers for 3D.graphic and a screen resolution of upto 800x480 pixles.
Its not entirely true that Ericsson does not make mobile phones anymore, they still make radio part and other hardware, which is sold as a platform
which Sony Ericsson and a range of other manufacturers make mobile phones of.
Ericsson's latest platform is called U500 and is aimed for use in mass market multimedia phones. In the specification Ericsson lists video recording of high quality, 12-MP camera, wvga screen (800x480 pixles), advanced 3D-graphics for games and user interface in 3D, CD sound quality and high resolution recording. This is achieved with three ARM11 pocessors and additional hardware accelerators.
The path from platform to complete phones is long. U500 will not be available comercially until first half of 2009 and thereafter it will take some additional time before phones bsed on the platform will appear. DOn't count on phones based on U500 until 2010.

Ah, I was just reading about this. I don't expect we'll see this on the market until at least 2011 although its a sign of things to come I guess.

12-MP camera, how stupid it's a mobile phone unless this phone has a mega high quality 35mm sensor and massive high quality lens like the dslr cameras the 12-MP is gonna be 100% useless and a complete joke it will take pics worse than vga cameras. |

They still have 2 or more years to make this. You never know what's gonna happen by then.

philips does the same; they develop some kinda motherboard for mobiles.
with onboard bluetooth, small videoproc, 2mp camera etc.
this could be intresting for some allround budget phones (eg alcatel uses)
but a 12mp onboard doesn't sound too promising to me; rather have an external modul and lens which usualy results in better pictures |

The Sony DSC-W200 is a 12MP camera and its rather slim. It doesn't need a massive lens like DSLRs. Though it does have one of them protruding lenses.

if it doesn't have a bigger enough high quality lens to cope with 12mp then you arent goona get the details of a 12mp.

F50fd has 12MPs and already bashed by owners although it has Fujifilm superCCD HR sensor. 15MP camera in a mobile phone?
i have three thoughts about it:
1. it will be completely useless.
2. it should be big enough to handle big lens and sensor(very big i mean )
3. if it will be slim it can't be featured pack, it actually will be a compact camera not a phone

Anything over 6 MP is a waste of money. Using current technology, the extra mega pixels create more problems instead of improving the picture quality.

Oops, sorry, I see @number1 beat me to it

in this article it's said, that more MP, worst quality.
that's not true.
if the sensor is the same on 3mp and 10mp than mybe yes, but the 10mp has better sensors that 3mp so...
and you don't know even how will look that phone if it's gonna be released. so... |

There's NO need to buy a REAL digicam if you have this I guess . . .

Really, 15MP is a bit over-the-top...
8MP would completely satisfy me.

I'll be contented with a 5 MP (K850i . . . ) - basing it on the uploads I am seein' here . . . though a 7 or 8 MP one will be much better !
