I know XP Pro will get support for like the next 4 years still, did'nt know they plan not to make updates. Have you ran the Microsoft Vista advisor tool then? Even 32bit Vista Ultimate is using a good 1GB of memory with several thing open. I've heard the 64bit uses 1GB with just the browser open.
I've got 3GB of RAM on this machine, you want 2GB really if you're a gamer or doing anything which needs resources, I do think 1GB of RAM is a minimum though to use it properly.
Heres a couple screen shots for you, I have'nt installed much yet as I only put it on yesterday. With programmes I'm making sure their either Vista compatible or have an update which makes them compatible.
Notice I'm using Firefox I don't trust Internet Explorer, not even on a new OS.

If anything i will go for the Home Premium as it has support for xbox 360 media edition. Just run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and it said something about my Internet connection not being there, well it is cos im on esato and other sites. Not a very good start for vista if it cant even tell weather or not i have an Internet connection hmm |

It's proberly saying that it doesnt know if you're network driver is supported like it said it doesnt know about mine.
I found the broadcom network driver I used in XP works fine. You're obviously need to get all you're basic drivers on a disc before installing. After you installed it's more than likely there be more drivers it will pick up that you need in Windows Update. |

Folks who are getting the cheaper versions, you can upgrade to a higher version anytime... By purchasing a key to "unlock" the premium features.. Actually there is only one version of vista except for the starter edition. Only the features have been disabled according to the product key you have purchased. This means you can upgrade from home premium to ultimate without a reinstall!

I got Vista for free yesteday thanks to Sony Anyway, things run perfectly on my laptop which is a dual core, Nvidia 7600 GO 256 MB, 1 GB RAM machine. I don't understand why people are saying you need 2 gig's of ram when mine hasn't even come close to using all of my ram and I have zero slowdown even running multiple apps through Aero with the glass effects turned on. Office '07 looks and runs great as well. |

@Missuk:
XP will still have critical updates etc coming out, service pack 3 is planned for next year I believe. It's not completely dropped from their support line up |

Thanks for the pictures of it..
it looks alot updated compared to XP Pro
does it have options to change the colours of the bottom taskbar,
I mean like on the XP Pro theres only 3 of them Blue, Olive Green, & Silver
ive run a advisor test on my Acer Aspire T120E it says I need a Video card for it im gonna take the risk and try without it lol
I upgraded my ram from 256MB to 1GB last year the advisor hasn't mentioned anything of it needing another ram stick
I hope your right that they will keep XP updates going another 4 years,
I heard the info all on Radio One's newsbeat
My laptop is screwed if the case lol
466Mhz
was a good bargain tho £90 I wanted it for surfing round the house in the comfort and of course the warmth... browsing the pc upstairs is chilly

yeah, microsoft recently commented that they were continuing support for XP
for me, I don't think I'll be upgrading any PC's to vista but I have a preorder for the new Vaio SZ4VWN/X to replace my 2 year old S3XP and they say this is the most powerful vaio ever built, but we'll see.
It comes with Vista business and initially I wanted Home Premium but comparing the two there seems little difference, just a few different names for almost the same thing like the DVD making etc.

Phewww well thats good..
good to have XP on 1 machine and Vista on the other
is VISTA running ok with Anti-Virus programs?
I mema the trouble I had when I got my Tiny PC with XP Home on it,
it was on of the first pcs out with at the time lol
Hmm you know I was beginning to think to myself why did I buy a Desktop I mean you can do alot more with them like upgrade them cheaper than a laptop, but having a laptop is more convienant!
Anyways hope my PCG-F400 (Sony Vaio)
lasts me a while
Sony Vaio's cost alot
I don't think i'd splash out on £1000 for 1 brand new
infact i'd prob go for Dell if I went for a brand spanking new one,
my mates just bought 1 was reduced from £500 to under £400
I guess when it comes to SONY your paying for the name

My desk top is a Dell:)
Must say I do like the Dell XPS H2c.
About the RAM, Dell themselves recommend 2GB of RAM, if you want decent gaming on a PC these days you need it.
I saw on a forum someone was talking about Vista 64bit and saying that with just the browser open he was using 1GB of RAM.
I'm certainly using more RAM than XP.
To miss uk,
To be honest I'm not sure if you can change the colour of the task bar, don't seem to be able to.
You seem to be able to change the colours of the windows though
