Nokia has quietly introduced a DIY firmware upgrade service so phone owners can update their phones over the air, or via a PC connected to the internet, and no longer need to visit a service centre to update the device.
Sony Ericsson has supported self-service firmware upgrades for several years now.

30 minutes... it hardly takes 15 minutes for the

It certainly works, it's been about for over a week now, I got an email last week about it from Noia, and I tried it with my old N70.
Worked a treat, actually slightly better system than SE, you don't need to remove the SIM, and you don't need any special drivers, the little application (similar to the SEUS) contains all the specific drivers for the phones, they simply auto install when you attach the phone. You can also keep the phone on the mains charging whilst you update (very good idea).
All in all a nice system.

@floatlite,
Better than SE? When was the last time a software upgrade from SE resulted in the complete loss of all data?
Think again. |

Not many are supported phones compared to SE. And it also took them how many years?

the software supports all models... the list of handsets they have are ones that have an updated version of software on the system.
I just tried updating my N73 and it noticed it an told me there are no updates as of yet for it.

With SEUS despite what it says, you do not actually need to remove the SIM - they only request that as a safety precaution. Neither do you need any special drivers either - SEUS II (rather then the online version SEUS I) includes the required drivers natively.
Also if you use a CDS-60 deskstand with SEUS you can also remain connected to the mains power when updating.

Actually with any of the SE Symbian phones you do loose all data on the device, as you will for all Nokia Symbian devices. Since the Symbian OS uses the same flash storage as user data it will be lost as part of the update. |
