You can use the free Wireless Village Server from http://www.yamigo.com/ .
Just register and after that you can add your instant-message-details:
Yahoo User ID:
Yahoo Password:
MSN User ID:
MSN Password:
AIM User ID:
AIM Password:
ICQ User ID:
ICQ Password:
Now it's time to setup your SonyEricsson
In the SonyEricsson phones, the IM Client configuration resides under the My Friends application on the mobile phone, under the menu option More/Accounts.
The configuration settings you need to enter are:
* Username - This setting should contain the name of the user account obtained from the Yamigo Server.
* Domain - This setting should be left blank or you can enter yamigo.com (any other domain will be rejected at login).
* Password - This setting should contain the password of the user account defined on the Yamigo Server.
* Server - http://yamigo.com/wv/control
* Internet Profile - This setting points to an existing internet profile configured on the mobile phone. Use an appropriate profile that will facilitate connectivity to the HTTP URL of the Yamigo IMPS Server.
* Allow Connection - This setting allows you to specify whether the IM Client can be used when connected to any network, or if it should only be used when connected to your home network operator. Specify Home Network in most cases to avoid unexpected, and often exorbitant, data roaming charges.
Some SonyEricsson phones will have additional settings, such as Check Interval which specifies an interval in seconds for polling the IMP Server. Please refer to the documentation for your mobile phone for more information.

I posted some info and settings here.
Hope this helps.
Yamigo isn't very reliable these days, with people getting "Network Error" when trying to log on.
Smartvas seems to be a lot more reliable and faster but can only be used with msn messenger and not yahoo.

Using Yamigo in conjunction with my friends - is this a better alternative to getting a java-based chat program, would you say? Cheers.

@JasonD
Well I would say it was.
For instance, on my S700i I get an audio alert when I recieve a message.
I can also set it up to tell me when a certain person comes online and I can also use WAP and have My Friends running at the same time.
I haven't had good experiences with the Java clients. the interface simply isn't as good either.
Also, if you are using MSN, then Smartvas is simply faster.
Have you used My Friends?

Thanks for the reply, GoldenFace!
'My Friends' for me, has always been that elusive icon on my phone that never reaches it's full potential! Often scrolled over, seldom clicked!
Mainly just because I haven’t known enough about it, and also because GPRS charges for me (Australia) are still geared at ring tone downloaders and sadly don't cater for excessive use.
If GPRS charges were cheaper I would no doubt set up the email feature as well (which I believe to be equally excellent, and similar to your describing of My Friends?)
One thing I found interesting about your previous post. When I Googling 'Smartvas' showed that this was a java app? Are you saying that Smartvas is better primarily for MSN, or just the best java app about, but still not as good as My Friends? Cheers!

EDIT: Further Googling revealed to me that it appears Smart VAS can be used either with My Friends, OR as a java app (no doubt for max compatability across handsets).

Additionally - for those reading - there is more info on setting this up here:

@jasond
You have the choice with smartvas.
You can either download the java app OR use the smartvas server if you already have an embedded client in your phone - such as My Friends – which is what I have done.
It would be nice to see how the java app compares |

I just put the app on my phone to compare, but it hangs on login. 'Fraid I won't be the one delivering the comparative revue!
For me, the My Friends version wouldn't display my entire contact list straight out - think I need to select which contacts should appear rather than the whole list.
My Friend's won't run in the background? So I can't have it always on, and giving feedback whenever someone sends me a msg. Not a problem, more an observation..

PS: GoldenFace, I'm a fool, and completely didn't realise I double linked to another thread of your own creation! Ha! But most helpful!
I think I'll put My Friends on hold, at least until I can find some good capped data plans! Thanks for the help!

Love Yamigo...
BUT why do the little logos next to my contacts not change colour when they are online anymore??? When I first connected with Yamigo it would show who was online by shoing the little logo in green, but now, NOTHING!
Any thoughts? |
