This has just happened to my W800i and SanDisk Memory Card !!!

Had the phone on upgrade from orange only 3 days ago - it nolonger switches on (just makes it to the sony ericson logo) and the sandisk memory stick is nolonger visiable in phone (when it was working) in a card read or anything else!! exactly the same problem as above!!

This irritating thing is that orange will replace my phone but not the memory card and sim card!!! ARGH !!

so i have called peak distribution and they are calling me this afternoon..

i have a few questions though..

do you think the new card that they send out as a replacement will have the same folders installed on it that the oe card has so that the phone knows where to save everything??

Also, has anyone tried calling or contacting sony ericson about this ?!?!

Even if they repair yours I dont think the directory structure will be recovered, usually a format is needed.

James,

I am on the Engineering team at SanDisk. We are very interested in HOW your card failed.

1) Was the card originally functional?
2) What event triggered the failure?
3) Do you push the card ALL THE WAY into the push-push socket, or do you simply put the card in the socket and close the rubber door?
4) How are you using the card? Photos? MP3? Video?

Any input is helpful.

If you have not already sent your card back to the distributor, I would be interested in having it sent directly to SanDisk.

Thanks
Mike

Hi,

Unfortunately, I have already sent it back to one of your UK distributors, however I can answer your questions.

1) Yeah, it worked fine - I had a whole MP3 album on there
2) The computer just crashed when the phone was in the PC.
3) Yes, I pushed it in until it clicked.
4) I had my phone storing photos taken on it and MP3s (No videos yet)

Seems I'm not alone though, a lot of people seem to be reporting the same problem.

Orange send out a brand new replacement, so it comes as the original one did, complete with memory card headset and so on, all they want back is the phone battery and charger, so go ahead with the replacement, as they have to replace with new, as it is less than 28 days old.

My card was working fine, until I tried to transfer music on to it via the supplied cable. Items sent by bluetooth worked fine, only when I tried to transfer by cable did the problems start.

Exactly the same thing happened to my w800 a few weeks ago. I had connected it to my PC for the first time and was just looking at one of the photos I'd taken when the PC locked up and suddenly all the files on the phone disappeared. The phone then refused to recognise the card and it wouldn't switch on with the card inserted - exactly as you guys have described.

Orange refused to replace the phone as ONLY the memory card was faulty. Three different people at Orange told me to just go out and buy a new card! As I'd only had the phone for less than 24 hours I returned it, cancelled my contract and got my money back.

I've just started a new contract with a new w800 but I won't be connecting it to a PC with the USB cable. Going to get a cheap card reader for a few pounds instead.

I think the problem is with the phone rather than the memory cards but would be interested to hear what Sandisk make of it (especially when they start getting lots of returned 'faulty' cards)....

I had the same probs with my w800i (worked on arrival, copied a mp3 to it, then the phone stopped at the SE-logo and no cardreader could read it). Turned it in for service and got it back like 1 day later with a brand new memorycard (and a new battery).

I dunno what experience others have had of orange, but i work in a retail store here in northern ireland, and i had a guy come into me last week with this exact problem. I phoned orange retail helpdesk directly, and they said no it wouldn't be covered as it was deemed as an accessory.

However i then thought i would phone the repair centre, who said that if we sent of the memory card, and the proof of purchase for the phone that they would look at the card, and if its faulty send a new one! Dunno whats happened as i haven't been back in work since that day, however i would like to think something positive has be done!

i have a w800i myself and right at the start i had the boot problem, but simply removing the memory card and then making sure i placed it back in properly, worked for me with no failure to memory card!

I had the same problem on my K750i. Can't remeber how exactly it happened, but I think the problem occured after I had use the came to take some pictures and after a 'reboot' it was stuck on the SE logo. After removing the memorystick of would continue to load.

Also tried two different memory card readers and none of them detected that there was anything inserted into the memorystick slot.

I sent it back to the vendor and awaiting a replacement stick.

The phone was running R1N software version.

28 hours!! I can beat that...I've had my phone for 9hours!!

After it turned up with a defective button, I phoned Orange to arrange a new handset, then a few hours later whilst playing with the camera onthe phone, it just froze.
After that the memeory card wasn't recognised. I tried it in my SOny digital camera and it wasn't recognised there either.

My concern is that even if I get the memory card replaced, that it will keep happening over and over again as I didn't do anything extreme to cause it...I was just recording some video!

Has anyone had repeated problems with more than one memory card?

A few things, i too have suffered from this problem. I have contacted sony ericsson and all the guy had 2 say was "er yeah, we know about that problem" so i asked y they were still sendin out faulty fones and he couldnt answer me, all he said was that i had 2 update my firmware via the SE website, which i did. And now the fone will turn on with the card in, but wont recognise it.

Actually thats a lie. Can ppl tell me if ur fones r the same; go 2 the service test menu, and test the memory card.

when the memory card is in, i get the msg "memory card unmounted" but when i take it out i get the msg "memory card not inserted" so i think the fone knows its there, it just refuses to acknowledge it.

but if ur with o2 and have this problem, dont worry, just ring them up and complain and they will send u a replacement straight away, mine is gonna be here on thursday. the only trouble is that i have lost all me photos

Hi there!
Mike, may be you can help. I just bought the w800i and after starting a claim because I found that someone has stolen the memory stick card before I open the phone, I finally got the memory card from the provider, but now I have a similar problem.
See everytime I turn on the phone I'm able to see the memory stick through the phone, but when I plug it with USB cable to my notebook, it seems to disappears. The notebook detects the memory stick and install all drivers, but then nothing happens. I'm not able to read it through the Windows Explorer neither any software provide it by Sony.
Today I sent a request to Sony, and they gave the following ticket number 10590042, but I haven't got any news yet (I now it's been less than 24hs... but I've bought the phone 48hs earlier)

Merry Christmas everyone.. I just got a new present, a nice Sony Ericsson W800i with a defective SanDisk 512 megabyte Memory Stick Pro DUO. I had my phone synced with my PC via the supplied USB cable and for some strange reason, my PC stop reading the card.

I then tried using the card reader and I had the same problem. Neither my phone nor my computer would recognize the SanDisk memory stick pro duo.

After reading numerous threads over a variety of message boards, I have concluded that the problem is with the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo. The memory stick goes "bad/locked up/fried/whatever" after being synced with a computer via the USB cable. I'm not certain what the exact mechanism is, but that's the trend I have noticed. The phone itself is good, its a compound problem that leads to the memory stick failing.

Best thing to do is avoid using the USB cable that came with the W800i and email SanDisk customer service right away to claim the warrenty. This problem affects SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo - SDMSPD-512 AX0510BW. Perhaps you can use this opportunity to purchase a larger memory stick at an online shop or local retailer and use only a card reader when you need to transfer files inbetween.
