Guys,

Just to let you know i've emailed SE via the Satio support page today to try and find aout about a persistent problem (will detail below for those who are interested) and have been told. (Apologies for length of post):

"If the issue persists, we would suggest that you update the software on your Sony Ericsson handset. However, the updated version of the software you require is unavailable until week 48 of 2009. When available, this can be done free of charge using our Sony Ericsson Update Service tool. To carry out the update you will need internet access and a USB cable."

So, a bit of a 'Don't know what's causing it, hope software update cures it' response, but marginally comforting as week 48 begins approx 23/26th Nov, depending on how you define it.

The problem is that any new photos taken do not appear in the media software or in the home page 'recent photo' tab. Essentially everything works fine during the camera/capture process but when you return the photos are nowhere to be seen. The photos are however correctly filed/foldered and viewable if you navigate to them via FIle Manager. Ok, but not ideal. I am able to use the image whilst still in camera mode, i.e. MMS etc.

A forced media refresh is the obvious solution and indeed what SE suggested. This lasts for about 1 min and then crashes the phone and reboots. (Fading to black, then pure white screen then reboot the normal way. Happens everytime. New music gets picked up fine though and seems ok on that front. This is an unbranded carphonewarhouse handset and i have taken 2 back, this is the thrird. Same problem on all three. It's so fundamental, i.e. to the uninitiated it looks like the camera is unable to save. that carphonewarehouse seem happy to accept as a faulty handset each time. I feel i could do this forever, but not helping as everything else on phone works fine. Tried muliple memory cards too. My latest theory is that it may be SIM card related as i can't find reference to the above problem anywhere on any forums.

I am still going to pursue the memory card idea by reformatting both i have and trying that. I have also tried taking sim/batt/card out and then rebooting without mem card and this worked for one photo! Then back to situation above. the other strange thing is that when i got my 2nd and 3rd handsets i restored the contact with backup via pcsuite and the photo problem was solved...for 2 days...then back to above situation. Very, very strange. Any ideas greatly appreciated...

Slight update on the above if you're interested: It seems to be to do with number of files the media manager can deal with. If i remove all files from the memory card. Refresh the media, it doesn't a) crash and b) from that point on photos work. but...i want music and phtoos on my memory card ...roll on next week's firmware update...

It seems like the phone isn't intended to be used with that many pictures or music tracks, or no proper use cases were set up during the design phase. There is no possibility to "zoom out" from the monthly view if pictures to scroll year by year, and if you have many pictures stored, it's very tedious to try to scroll to the other end of the list of pictures.

The same goes with the music player: If you have many music tracks, from more tha na hundred albums, and from more than a hundred different artists or bands, it's tedious to scroll down ti the desired track. A proper use case description should certainly have indicated the need for a textual search function for albums, artists and titles.

1. I have 1200+ music files, Satio found them all, just give it enough time. Lack of search mong them is RIDICULOUS, I fully agree.

2. Photo is working fine for me including zoom. However using a digital zoom is rather idiotic - it's essentially cropping afterwards, why the hell would anyone use a digital zoom?

3. Generally speaking I never had any crash or slowdown or any bug during the past 1+ week I own this phone except RoadSync's (3rd party preinstalled app, made by DataViz) inability to work with Google (logs in then gives you an error log so it isn't a crash either.)

mine too (over a week now) has not had any of the photo issues that 66stephen99 has come across.
I've got about 800 tracks and 120 photos at the moment .... you can search just tracks or just file names
but it's from the search function NOT from within media - daft !!
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Never found any bugs on mine, except that my Satio doesnt support class 6 microSDHC's. Other than that, everything seems fine. Got over 300 pics and I never experienced any problem. I bought the phone sim-free/unbranded

I think optical zoom on a phone is asking for trouble, mechanical movement = failure over time, the camera function does what it does very well if you want to shoot beyond that then get a digi camera, i am happy it doesn't have optical zoom, might even put me off buying it, to much room for breakdown in an everyday use item

Yeah why not asking for a DSLR CCD system in your phones too
The advantage of 12mp is that the photos are so large that it's like if you had 5x optical zoom!
Unless you have a 50'' LCD with 4000x3000 resolution

That's not necessarily true.

In the meantime, I've came across some hot news @ mobile-review.com:

"The Sony Ericsson Satio has been pulled from sale in the UK at the Carphone Warehouse. The reason for the recall is being cited as software issues. an all too common problem for Sony Ericsson handsets over the past year or two. Interestingly though Carphone Warehouse is continuing to sell the silver variant of the handset, it's only the black version that has been withdrawn from sale. There is as yet no word of whether this recall affects other retailers in the UK or indeed other retailers in other countries. Sony Ericsson themselves will not be keen on having their current flagship handset withdrawn from sale, especially so close to the Christmas shopping period. Sony Ericsson have been trying to put their previous history of buggy and defective handsets behind them and this latest episode certainly won't help those efforts. "

Not so good news for SE. Hard to believe that they kept everyone waiting that long for it, creating even a Lauch Blog for this phone, and now it has that many problems. It feels that they haven't tested it to its exhaustion. Car manufacturers do test their produtcts in the most extreme conditions just to make sure they will handle harsh situations well. It's such a shame, even more if we consider its hefty price.

It's not so simple. If you squeeze 12 Megapixels in such a small sensor then you may end up with lousy quality shots when zooming pics to a pixel to pixel level. Even the less informed customer already knows it isn't just a matter of increasing the number of pixels. I would've prefered that they have increased the sensor size and put better lenses than having 12 Mpixels on board. Who really benefit from the move from 8 to 12 MPixels? See people posting pics around here. They almost never post full sized pictures. Instead, they post them @ VGA res. It's gimmickry. You can also see that it's post processing is too much aggressive; just take a look @ their pics sizes. 2 Mb for 12 Mpixel shots? Even the C905 can produce way larger pics.

I have experienced the same problem Stephen, it seems to occur when you have more than about 1500 photos (for me at least). Sblantipodi created a thread about this issue which contains a little more info: Satio Media BUG

I'm also hoping for a firmware fix ASAP, as I used to keep my entire photo collection on my c905, whereas currently I can only store the last 5 months of photos, in order to prevent this problem from occurring.

Why only the black ones? Is the silver phones better?
