Hehe. This thread is almost as funny as the.. 'owmygawd I broke the keys on my new phone after testing it a bit by hammering on them with my nails - WHAT A LOUSY BUILD SE SUCKS SO MUCH!'.

Really, why not just say you want phones that never break, work flawlessly and need no updates, and wil last for twenty years, instead?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the quality is poor. All I am trying to say to you guys is that a sticker (it may be very thick but it is still a sticker which can be damaged, whether by trying the wrong case or just through carelessness) is used for the keys and they are not like the keys on your PC keyboard. Unfortunately, I am now in the position of having keys with light shining through where it shouldn't! I can just see that I will be bringing my phone into an SE centre the next time I go to Singapore (fixed and returned in 2 hours unlike London) to get it fixed.

Enjoy your P1. I certainly am! Just shows what a piece of junk the P990 is! Anyone want a P990???

@gseh

Post a picture of the light shining through so everyone can clearly see what you mean.

Here are 2 photos showing the light shining through on the Q/W and A/S keys. The stickers were pulled away by the leather case and nothing harder. I'm still kicking myself for being so careless but believe me, it didn't take much to pull off the corners.

I've never done this before so hope the photos come out alright.

Come on guys, after posting the photos, will someone at least make a comment?!! I know the photos aren't great but I think you can see the light showing through on the top left corners of each key.

Yes, I can see light shining-through at the corners. Is it the 'sticker' part that has come away or the bit underneath, at the corners?

It's the stickers which have pulled away from the keys at the corners. Because they were sticking up I used a sharp blade knife to cut away the bits sticking up to smooth off the edges but the damage is already done. The term sticker probably conjures up the wrong image because they are pretty thick but in the end they are just stuck onto the key so you must be careful how you treat your phone! When I run the ends of my fingers on the edges of the keys I can definitely feel the stickers on some of them.

..so, is the key actually two pieces? A stamped out base, and then a melted on, thinner, layer on top of that? With the letters and so on?

That's the point - some of us were naive enough to believe that the keys were solid pieces of plastic (like the keys on PC keyboards) rather than bits of plastic with stickers (or worse still, paint!) on the top showing the letters and symbols.

Er.. most keyboards that weigh less than a kilo or two have hollow buttons, and stickers with letters embedded or melted in on top. And sometimes the edge of the button can break off, and the plastic layer on top will become loose.

So until someone confirms the buttons are actually two parts glued on top of a frame by small children in Singapore...
