Hey all, great forums you have here.

My problem lies with a generic USB cable i purchased from ebay. Local stores were charging 90-100 dollars for it (official AND unofficial - in australia), so i went on ebay and scouted out one for about 20 dollars.

no phone detected.

My usb works, my XP is updated by SP1, and my phone is brand new. what gives? drivers? software? FMA doesn't detect anything, nor does XTND connect or any of the other sony-ericsson software i've downloaded.

the cable has "T618" written on the connecting bit to the phone, and "CSB CABLE" written closer to the usb connecting bit. the driver supplied is "PL2303". that's pretty much all i know about the cable (the seller is an idiot). here's a link to ebay where you can see the picture.. i.e. "ohhh he means that cable".

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBa[....]706191&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

or find the item: 6307706191

any help would be really appreciated. this guy charged 10 bucks postage, so all up i'm down 30 dollars, and i've been trying to get this thing working for the past week!

my computer knowledge is very advanced, that said there could be something very basic that i've overlooked, so don't skimp on the grisly details when it comes to a list of troubleshooters/things to do.

It is the right cable and it should work (if it is not broken).

Make sure that the driver (PL2303) is installed correctly, that "Prolific USB-Serial Adapter" is visible under Device Manager. You can re-assign a different COM port to it, so may be it is in conflict with something else.

For XTND and SE software, you have to install Mobile Phone Monitor (which should be part of the install package), and "enable" the COM port which corresponds to the cable. Control Panel -> Phone Monitor Options

For Float's Mobile Agent, you shouldn't have to do anything.

For T2xx/T3xx phones, the cable must be set at 9600 speed to connect. Not sure about T6xx series. You can do that under Device Manager -> Ports -> COMx . If you are using FMA (which does not require Mobile Phone Monitor but will not have conflict with it), you can set the baud rate inside the program.

woah..

turns out i'd done pretty much everything i could. I'm a computer technician by trade, so problems like these normally don't phase me. the driver he had supplied wasn't working, he sent me to a chinese site with the correct driver on it. worked within minutes. en google came up with nothing but shops from a variety of different searches.

some info for those (who i know exist - read some of the neg. feedback on that ebay guy) who have the same prob:

the correct driver (for me: win xp pro SP1) is named:

wd_pl-2303_v20018.zip

downloaded from:

http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/v_filebrw_result.asp

float's mobile agent now works fine.

the (of questionable relevance) troubleshooting procedures i went through before getting the working driver:

1. removed old PL2303 driver
2. updated OS (XP service pack 1)
3. tested usb slots with different devices (e.g. scanner, printer, camera)
4. bought a new lamp for my bedroom

damnit, mine still isnt working I bought a generic one like your. I tried everything you said you did, plus installing that new driver u recommended, I also switch the prolific port to com1 instead of com3 and still nothing, I wont connect to my phone. Im pretty sure the usb isnt broken, it has no physical damage, and also when i plugged it in for the first time it said It found new hardware plus it charges my phone when I plug it in...

If it charges your phone, then in all likelihood it is NOT a data cable and cannot be used for transferring data. Sorry.

But I think you did say it was identified as COM3? in that case make sure the COM port speed is 9600 (set under FMA or device manager)

Hi everyone. I have the same problem with this usb data cable I bought from ebay for the Sony Ericsson T630.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay[....]816708&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

I installed the drivers that came with the cd (pl-2303), it charges the phone but doesn't seem to be detected on any of the Sony ericsson software.

It occasionally seems to be connected to the Sony Ericsson Image Editor but when I try to download a pic to the phone, it doesn't work. It also occasionally works with the Mobile Phone Options in Control Panel. On the serial end of the cable it is labelled "For ERI T39/T68". Please help!!!

Another problem I am having is that when I am able to connect to Floats Mobile Agent, I can only send files from my mobile to the pc and not from pc to mobile phone. And also, it always disconnects, saying that my phone has disconnected or is out of range. What does that mean? HELP! ANYONE PLEASE!

Also it disconnects after a short while, as if it's running out of power or something. I have tried all the usb ports on my computer, I have 2 on the motherboard and a PCI to usb thingy which has 4. I only use 2 usb ports, 1 for my adsl modem and 1 for the stupid usb data cable. Any suggestions as to why the cable doesn't work?

Hi everyone!
I've got similar problem with my T630. I've bought a USB>serial cable, installed pl2303 (tried few versions of it). In device manager I can find: under USB section "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port", under ports "USB to Serial Port (COM2)". But my computer doesn't seem to like my mobile - not detected in Phone Monitor Options, fAMA couldn't connect... I can't get that sh*t working, even with this post.
Oh, and I'm using Win Me, if that's important =P
Anyone knows what should I do (besides buying IrDA or BT )?

All I can say is I can get it to work (whether it's DCU-11, aftermarket USB cable, or serial cable with a seperate USB-serial adapter) under Win98 and 2000 on several computers. If the adapter shows up as a valid COM under device manager with no yellow exclamation mark, the driver install is successful and it should be working.

Most people fail to set the COM speed to 9600. You MUST set the COM port speed to 9600. Older Ericsson branded models do not have this requirement.

For a cable that works only some of the time, I would say the cable is bad. Or the contacts on the cable/phone are dirty.
