We know that most phones dont take advantage of high speed cards but which memory card would you choose for faster transfer though a PC?
These speed tests were done over at gamespot with a card reader and also a Sony PSP.

http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-20872-2229-x-x-x

"There aren't a whole lot of major memory stick manufacturers out there. You'll find Sony, SanDisk, and Lexar branded sticks in retail and online stores. You can get a 1GB stick for about $100, but manufacturers also make "High Speed" versions that can cost much more than the normal models. We wanted to see if there is actually a difference in transfer speeds, so we gathered together a selection of 512MB and 1GB memory sticks from Sony and SanDisk to see how fast we could move files onto each stick.

We compared the 512MB and 1GB models from SanDisk's "gaming" line against a normal 512MB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo and a 1GB "High Speed" Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. We first transferred a 384MB file to and from the memory sticks using a SanDisk USB 2.0 12-in-1 ImageMate flash card reader/writer, and we then conducted the same transfer tests writing to and from our memory sticks using a Sony PSP and a USB cable. We also put the 1GB sticks through an additional test using a larger 769MB file.

Test System: Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz CPU, 1GB (512MB x 2) Samsung PC3200 Memory, 200GB Seagate Barracuda ST3120026AS HD, Windows XP Professional.

Memory transfer devices: Sony PSP, SanDisk USB 2.0 ImageMate 12-in-1 Reader/Writer.

Memory cards: Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 512MB, Sony High Speed Memory Stick Pro Duo 1GB, SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo 512MB, SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo 1GB.

And the winner is...

SanDisk came out as the clear winner in all of the transfer speed tests. We were able to move our 394MB file onto the 512MB SanDisk stick in 1:11 minutes, but the same transfer took over 3:30 minutes on the 512MB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. The 1GB SanDisk also beat the "High Speed" 1GB Sony Memory Stick by a large margin in the 769MB file transfer test. Using the USB card reader, we were able to get the file onto the 1GB SanDisk stick in 2:26 minutes compared to 6:12 minutes for the Sony. The transfer time using the PSP was 3:17 for the SanDisk and 7:00 minutes flat for the Sony. Yes, this is the same 1GB SanDisk memory stick that you can find for $100-140 online, and we also used the same Sony "High Speed" 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo that retails for $150-$300.

We found that transferring data to the memory card was much faster using our dedicated flash card reader/writer, as using the PSP to write directly to the card lengthened transfer times by about 30 seconds in the 394MB file transfer and almost a minute in the 769MB file transfer.

The SanDisk memory sticks still outperformed the Sony models even with the PSP file transfer overhead. Aside from the transfer speed differences, we didn't notice much of a difference between the cards while using them for normal media playback or saving games on the PSP. Judging by the test results, if you're looking for a fast and affordable memory stick, we'd pick the SanDisk over Sony any day."

Looks like sony got owned... BIG time

but are the sony cards more reliable than sandisk in the long run?

Nice to know. Its not worth spending extra on a genuine version when the sandisk appears o be better for less money.

I make the calcul calcul , Sony lies when they announce the highSpeed card for 10/20 mo/s , it's just 2mo during the test

i've had 3 sony ones and 1 sandisk.
only my sandisk one doesn't work anymore :s

thats my experience with it

Posted by ten18
Im getting a 1Gb card next week and I know which brand its gonna be...
its always been Sony for me... theyve never let me down...
But with the SanDisk cards being much cheaper and faster than the Sony ones there really is no choice now is there?
btw has anyone else had bad experiences with the SanDisk cards?

i would go for sony, as they create the phones as well, so better with compatiblly, i will be get my 512 mb card for my k750 on pay day,

I´m glad to hear this...just bought a 512mb Sandisk ms duo pro for 66 euros

I have 2 512MB Sandisk MSDuoPro. Both of them actually have 468MB each or something like that. Is it normal? I formatted them 3 times, but that's all they got. Is it the same for the original Sony MSDuoPro?

Posted by MaDnEzZ
@melk yeh you will never get the full size because the file system takes up some space, the same thing with harddrives you never really get a 40gb you get 38.somthing gb

Its also mentioned in the gamespot link at the top of the page:

Note that "512MB" and "1GB" memory cards don't actually have 512MB and 1GB of software storage capacity respectively. Cards marketed as "512MB" actually only have 468MB of usable memory and "1GB" cards only have 969MB due to formatting overhead and differing definitions of what "megabyte" actually means.
According to the storage manufacturer a MB is 1,000,000 bytes, but for software, a MB is 1,048,576 bytes. Don't be surprised when you can't fit that 500MB movie onto your 512MB card.

Got it. Thanks for the replys!

i have the sony 1gb duo pro and it works great, i would have gotten the scandisk but was worried about their reliablility...

I recently just purchased a 1GB Sony HIGH SPEED stick and a SanDisk MobileMate to read it in to increase speeds and it also means I don't have to carry the cable round with me.

However I've just had to send the MobileMate back for replacement because it doesn't actually read my 1GB card!!

Ordered my sandisk 1gig yesterday... and it came this morning!
Its great! well worth the price! and it works perfect with my phone and my PSP.

Tests:
Using my card reader i managed to transfer 700MB in just 3.40 minutes.
Using my PSP i managed to transfer 700MB even quicker in just 3.00 minutes!

I can definently recommend Sandisk over Sony anyday! so much faster!

I have a Sony "high speed" card for my k750i and it doesn't even work in most of my card readers - including a brand new mobilemate

So, I got a sony MSAC-US30
Now I can write 700Mb in 2mins

Write speed:
6,123,815 b/s
5,980 kB/s
5.8 MB/s

I believe poor results people experience with this card is because performance is optimised for the parallel interface and most reader/writers only use the serial interface...

It is important to note that hard drive manufacturers often use the metric definition of the prefixes "giga" and "mega." However, nearly all operating system utilities report capacities using binary definitions for the prefixes.

For example, a drive advertised as 200 GB (metric) is closer to 186.26 GiB (binary) in the real world.

Anyone using 1gb MS duo on K750i?? How do u find the speed when saving pics and other stuffs?

Posted by dckl
Doesn't Lexar make meory sticks too? Are they lousy, is that why ppl never talk about them?

Posted by mustafabay
I think Lexar only makes memory sticks. But not duos.

Anyone looking for a cheap 1gb memory stick duo? Just been to HMV, and they are selling them for £34.99, dunno how long that's going to last. Probably not long cuz they're selling the 512mb ones for £54.99 So best make the most of it. It is a Sandisk one. Better than spending £100 on it.

Posted by REO
If anyone has recently upgraded from a 128 MB DUO, I am interested in purchasing a used 128 MB DUO stick. Please PM with offers.

Thanks......

Has anyone using the normal black Sony 512mb MS pro duo? How's the speed on K750i?? What about the speed for saving camera pics ? Thanks !

I recently got a sandisk 1Gb gaming stick. I haven't noticed it being any slower then the 64meg stick.

@Bexter- hope you aren't joking. Please can you push any place on theweb to reach this HMV for the MSD Pro? or take it and send it somehow, Thanx. .. .. .. @Reo~ Iyam using a 128 Sony MSD in my S700 & it can sure fit your 710. But again, how to send ?

Posted by mrao
Fedex

Hmmm... that makes me wonder... if FedEx and UPS were to merge, will it be called Fed.Up ?

Posted by red_xvi
i just bought a sony 1gb high speed ms pro duo, and it's great.

in terms of speed, i couldn't really ask for more when transferring via the psp.

the only thing that bugs me is that the psp/k750i have incompatible mp3 directories.

to get around it, i'm just going to purchase another 1gb stick for my phone.

For all those sony purists out there...I was suprised to find a Sandisk Memory stick boxed with my K750i. I figure if Sony thinks Sandisk's products good enough to package with their own, not point in buying Sony. Can't wait for 2gb card to come down in price!!! Could buy about 3 1gb cards for the same price at the moment.

Posted by AppA
Does any1 have the 2gb model comparison?
I can have both at the almost same price (160 euro).

So, go for SanDisks?

when i got my w800i's both of them came as standard with SanDisk 512MB Duo's. If they're good enough for SonyEricsson to include them as OEM, they're certainly good enough for me.

Maybe the SanDisk USB 2.0 ImageMate 12-in-1 Reader/Writer used in this test didnt detect the sony properly and used serial mode instead of parallel?

Anyone else done similar performance tests? Maybe with a different reader?

I bought a 1GB Sony Pro Duo on ebay for £45. Very pleased with the performance.

Roll on the new firmware though!!!!

Posted by jcpsad
so i guess sandisk is really better... not to mention it is much cheaper... at least here in our country...

Sandisk all the way! As they make memory cards for different gadgets/formats: SD/MMC/RS MMC/Trans Flash etc.

Posted by AppA
yea, SanDisk was here when Sony was just pooping in it's diper, that's why the whole MediaMarkt chain sells SanDisk (atleast here in Holland).

Posted by whizkidd
Wonder why Lexar was left out of this comparo....??
Are they not credible enough??

K750i and Sony 1gb pro duo high speed doesn't match.

I've had an absolute nightmare with mine - completely unreliable. In trying to figure out why I've come across so many others who have had such problems - always with a Sony 1gb high speed.

Never found out why, but statistics tells me there is a mis-match there.

There are some problems with certain SE firmware on the K750 and W800, it's not a problem of any memorystick itself.
My Sony 1GB MS duo pro has never been corrupted and it is super fast when used in a Sony cardreader (MSAC US30).
The Sony's are slower than Sandisk when used in serial mode, that's how most cardreaders work.
In parallel mode the Sony MS duo pro beats any Sandisk with two fingers in its nose and the Sony's are far more reliable then the Sandisks
In my K750i it works flawless all the time.
