Add K750 to iSync in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and 10.4 Tiger

Click to view updated thread with images

Posted by Jools
This thread is now obselete for 10.4 users since Apple released iSync 2.1 on Monday 11th July 2005 which officially supports the K750i

The Sony Ericsson K750 isn't officially supported in iSync 2.0 for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger yet. However with a simple modification it can be made to work perfectly.

(See another post below for the solution for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther)

Download and unzip this file, which contains these two files:

Then follow these instructions:

1) Quit iSync, then CTRL (or right) click on the iSync application icon in the Applications folder
2) Choose "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu
3) Navigate to the following directory:
Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/
4) Drop the two files above into this directory. The MetaClasses.plist file will replace the existing one. The SEK750.tiff is a new file.
5) Close all the windows, and pair the phone

If you had previously tried pairing the phone, remove details of your K750i in the Bluetooth System Preferences and in the ~/Library/Phones directory.

You may need to initiate pairing from both the Mac and the phone, for it to appear in iSync.

Please bear in mind that this is an unofficial and unsupported 'hack' to enable syncing for the K750 until Apple releases its own official support. If you are not happy modifying the contents of Mac application packages then please don't attempt this tip. I won't be held responsible for any damage you may cause!

However saying that, this tip has worked well for many K750 owners.

(Credit goes to Alex Vermulst for modifying the .plist file and to me for creating the K750i iSync icon graphic!)

Here's some different instructions for adding K750 support to iSync 1.5 in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther:

http://lindmark.net/technical/osx/isync-k750i/

Note, this tip currently doesn't add the nice new K750 icon to the iSync window.

This is not working for me mate, I download the files and put them into the correct folder, but it does not replace the original files, it just sits in the folder and does nothing.

Any ideas?

As a point when I download them, the metaclasses file shows as Safari file on both my desktop and my laptop, it's called MetaClasses.plist.xml

Posted by Jools
Hmm... not sure what happened there, but there's two solutions:

1) Delete the .xml from the end of the filename of the file you downloaded and put it in that folder again (delete the one with .xml on the end).

or

2) Re-download the zip file linked above and start again (delete the .xml file from before.)

That should get you going!

By the way, great script Jools. It works the way iSync is SUPPOSED to work. Thanks.

ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Jools
Ah, you must be referring to my Sync Now program!

It's been on MacUpdate and VersionTracker and its Homepage since Saturday...

Over 300 downloads already!

Posted by sapporobaby
Yup. I was one of those downloads.

Posted by rickster2kuk
Had the same problem with not getting it to work, but downloaded the file again and followed the excellent instructions - connected my phone via bluetooth and bingo, isync now shows my K750i - just synced all my phone book with address and calender with ical!

Cheers for a great workaround - esp. for us OS X users!

worked perfectly for me

Sir,

You are my hero

Thanks!

Posted by tazmania
ive changed a lot of phones... all of them from SE.
most of the times id get frustrated because iSync would not support it.
but thinking reasonably you cant ask from apple to update isync everytime a new phone comes out. OR SHOULD YOU ???
i mean, why cant apple update iSync one a month ? it doesnt take that much time and is really simple update that would make thousand of apple users happy...

at least we got Jools !!! thanx jools for everything !!!

Posted by Jools
Ironically, I just got my K750i today and can't get this to work!

It pairs ok, come up in iSync, but on the first sync it "Resets Contacts", starts to "Receive Changes", does nothing for a while, then I get a message saying "The connection was lost while talking to the device."

To get it to do anything again, I have to turn off the phone, delete it from iSync and Bluetooth prefs and start all over again. And the same happens again.

Yipes!!!!!!

I am keeping my v800. It works and works. I could get a k750i for about 220 Euros, new. Never mind though. I have not heard anything good about the k750i.

Posted by Jools
Well, it would appear that this tip doesn't work on O2 branded K750i's.

No idea why, but others in the Apple Support Discussions have reported it too.

It must be a bug in the O2 firmware as unbranded K750i's work fine.

Major pain for me because I sync my Contact and Calendars very often.

Posted by sapporobaby
Hey Jools. Try it with Phone Agent. I have found some irregularities where PA does not work quite right with the v800, but most things work okay.

Posted by Jools
I managed to get my contacts on ok, by exporting the phonbook from my K700, but its the calendars I've yet to get on...

Posted by sapporobaby
I am pretty sure you have tried to export them as a vcal or ical already right?

Posted by Jools
Yeah, if I export the .ics file from iCal the phone sticks it in the 'Other' folder. If I rename it to .vcs (which apparently is what it should be) the phone just ignores it.

Posted by vampyriaerotica
Wow! Anything for P910i?

Posted by sapporobaby
It should not ignore .vcs at all. This is the default for calendar info. Can you send them from your k700 to the k750?

On a side note, my wife just got a Nokia 6680 for free today from my friend in Kuwait. I have to say, it is a nice phone.

P.S. This is the k750 and iSync thread. Not the P910 and iSync thread.

Bumps this Excellent Thread..!!! should be made sticky for Mac Users!!

Posted by Supa_Fly
I second that. Its hard enough for Mac user's never getting any support from their service provider for cell phones; make this a sticky please mods!!

Jools; I'm not a Mac user yet nor have a SE anylonger - still looking for just the right one; however you deserve BIG TIME props, much ReeeeeSpeeeCT for this script! I've pointed several user's who've either used or modified your script to get other phones to work.

Excellent job. Job .... is Steve Jobs listening .... and maybe an income outta it as well for spare time tinkering, huh Jools??!!!

Cheers.

Nothing works

Posted by EG
Nothing works! I have spent the day trying. And now it is not even possible to open the phone from Bluetooth. Is there any way to start over with the old settings?

If you want help you'll have to give a bit more information than just "Nothing works"?

What did you try?
What version of Mac OS X are you using?
Can you pair the phone?
Can you send files to the phone via Bluetooth File Exchange?
What exactly doesn't work?

Posted by ARTY
Hey! Ive just got my new K750i and it appears to pair up in bluetooth. Is there anyway to make it appear as a removeable harddrive on the mac? I've read some posts that it works on a pc but when i plug my usb cable from phone to mac it just charges.

I am sorry i understand it is not easy to help me without any information. I downloaded the two files, put them according to the instructions. When i pair the phone its seems to be working but i can not send files to the phone. I sync finds the phone but as soon as the phone asks if it is ok to open up to the computer it just stops. Could not sync to k750i...
I put the old .plist back but it is still not possible to send files to the phone. I am using a powerbook G4 and ver 10.4.1.

I am very thankfull for any suggestions, as you understand i am not very good at this.

When you say "send files to the phone", do you mean the Contacts and Calendars through iSync?

When the phone asks if the computer cam access it, do you click "Yes".

What error message comes up?

In the iSync window underneath the progress bar, what text appears last?

In iSync, go to Window > Sync Log and see what messages appear there.

The best thing to do first is to delete all pairings from the phone, and from Bluetooth System Preferences, and delete the handset from the iSync window (Devices > Remove Device).

Also, go into (your Home folder)/Library/Phones and delete your K750 from there too if its there.

Then start again with the pairing process but initiate the pairing from the phone not the Mac.

Post back with any further info, error messages etc.

hi,

i am quite new to 'advanced' phones. i have had a basic nokia for past few years.

why do people sync with their computers? what new opportunites arise from hooking your k750i to your computer?

i mainly use the phone for calling/texting/mp3/video/camera and am interested in other benefits.

sorry for being a bit of a newbie

thanks,

Syncing with a phone (especially on a Mac) means your phone and computer are always up-to-date with the same information. That could be phone numbers, addresses, URLs, appointments, birthdays, reminders, tasks etc.

Often its easier to enter such information on a computer and then transfer it to the phone. It also means you always have a backup of the info on your phone in case anything ever happened to it.

Many people use their phones nowadays as personal organisers. Its an easy way of carrying around lots of important information in an electronic form.

You can also send and receive text messages from a Mac via your phone, and backup SMSs once your phone memory is full.

thank you JoolsG4 for your reply.

its basically adding 'pda' type info to your phone.

this could be handy as i prefer adding things on computer due to it being quicker.

this could come in handy for various info being added.

i will try the program out on mac osx

thanks,

Thank you for taking time with me and my problem. When i pair the phone it is not possible to open the phone to download pictures or sound as i done with my k700i. I can see the window that looks like a browser. But i get a message that it is not possible to connect do i want to try again? Works fine with my k700 though. My problem is that it is hard to explain to you as my system is in swedish.

I think i have tried all your advices but will give it another try tomorrow.

Again thank you for your help.

Posted by sapporobaby
@EG

Maybe you can write the problem down in Swedish. I can understand a bit and my wife is Finnish and can speak Swedish, so maybe we can translate things to get a better idea what is not happening.

Posted by tazmania
hej EG...

theres no actual solution to your problem.

from what ur sayin i understood that u used 'Browse Device...' from the bluetooth menu but it wouldnt connect.

i had the same problem with you tried installing again and again but didnt help.

and then once, i had to restart the computer and when i tried again it worked perfectly fine.

so i suggest you restart your computer, and hope it works!!!

PS: any1 having kernel panics in Tiger when using the USB cable and disconnecting it ???

Posted by Yazan24

What "it" still doesn't work for cable?

Posted by sapporobaby
I do not get kernel panics but my PB stops responding once I dismount the v800. Apple has to fix this.

Hello again! I have tried everything again today. Starting over, restarts and deleting. Sometimes i get the phone to browse device after restart but not always... This is the synclogg from isync (in swedish)

söndag 29 maj 2005 10.56.11
Kan inte ansluta till enheten. Kan inte ansluta till kanal på enhet (servern kan vara nere)
Synkroniseringen för enheten "Enzo K750i" misslyckades

I think it translates more or less to: Can not connect to the unit. Can not connect to channel on unit (the server can be down). Sync for unit "Enzo K750i" failure.

Maybe it is time to give up? This is my first time asking for help in a forum it is great. Thank you all.

@EG

Try this. Delete all pairings. Remove the phone. If you have another BT device, try to connect this and see if it is working with your Mac. If so, delete this and then try to pair again but let the phone do it.

Posted by tazmania
he has the same problem as i had.
i got the exact same error with isync and i couldnt browse the device, neither send anything to it !!!

i don what happened and it got fixed.
basically i just restarted one day and it was working!!!

and i know there wasnt any problem with my bluetooth since i had my bluetooth mouse paired to it all the time!!!

Posted by EG
Thanks Sapporobaby. Tried your advice but there is no change. The last few restarts it has not even been possible to browse the device anymore. I will just have to wait for it to fix itself. It is important to know when you have been beaten, is it not?

Thank you all. Maybe it is time to buy a new PB:)

Enzo from Sweden.

Hello EG

I have not have any problems. I am using a v800, s700i and they both work perfectly. My wife's Nokia 6680 even connects fine with my PB. Wish I could do more to help you.

Posted by Jools
I've just done a complete re-install of Mac OS X 10.4 to try to determine what my K750 syncing problem is. I thought it could be a botched installation or damaged iSync app or even a third-party bit of software. Anyway, it made no difference whatsoever.

The phone pairs ok from the computer. It asks to use it with iSync, synchronise contacts and calendars, access the internet and use as a remote control. I say 'Yes' to all except 'use internet'.

The phone acknowledges the connection and iSync opens up and the phone appears in the window. I then tell it to 'reset the device' on the first sync (not merge data) and click Sync Devices.

It connects to the phone ok and puts up the following messages below the progress bar:

Resetting "Jools K750i" contacts...
Receiving changes...
Resetting "Jools K750i" Calendars...
Receiving changes...

Then at that point it pauses for quite a while and eventually puts up a dialog box saying:

"The connection was lost while talking to the device. Device "Jools K750i syncronization failed."

The phone however, still thinks it is syncronizing and the progress bar and animation are still going on the phone's screen.

I hit Cancel on the phone and it says "Session Interrupted"

If I then press "Sync Devices" again in the iSync window I get the following error:

"Cannot connect to the device. Can't connect to channel on device (server might be down). Device 'Jools K750i syncronization failed'."

I then have to turn the phone off and on again before I can get back to the original error message.

Even if I disable Calendar syncing it stops at the "receiving changes" part of the process.

This is really very annoying. I'm going to try it on a mates computer tomorrow to see if that makes any difference.

Hey JoolsG4

Try this. Leave the phone in discoverable. I had to do this with my k700 and it worked.

If you have a chat client, send me a PM with your details, and we can maybe work this in realtime. I have a few, and I mean few ideas that might make this work. I use MSN, iChat, and Yahoo, so feel free.

please can you help me out as I am pretty new to macs
Thanks

Posted by sapporobaby
@Mustu,

I hope you have read this entire thread. You have not provided any information about if you are having a problem, if your Mac even sees your phone, even if it is paired, etc....

Makes it a bit hard to help you. First start by reading the thread from the beginning and then come back with a complete question about your problem and then we can see if we can help out.

Posted by tazmania
guys im sure u wont find any solution to Jools's problem.

i had the exact same problem !!!!

im guessing theres some problem with the .plist file !!!

whats weird is that mine just worked accidentally after a restart and after that has been working perfectly !!!!

Jools: i suggest u remove anything to have to do with the K750 on ur mac.

reboot ur k750 turn on bluetooth and then reboot ur mac.
then, try to send a pic or something to ur phone. if it works, add ur phone through bluetooth setup assistant and then it should open isync. sync ur k750... i hope it works !

PS: I URGE ALL MAC USES TO GO TO http://www.apple.com/feedback/isync.html
and send feedback to apple about isync. i have done it, and ive requested that they update iSync once a month so that all phones are supported !!!!
