I wish I was back at Uni. I've had enough of where I'm working; I've never seen such a badly managed business.

Posted by yea g
Where are you working?

Posted by carkitter
Haha!

I can't tell you that after my previous comment! But I will say that its in Retail.

Posted by yea g
lol

Ok so somewhere badly managed and on the shore... hmm.......

Hahahaha, no results...

@yea g: Yeah I don't like the cards that much either. Prefer the old school coins, but I have no say in it anyways.

Posted by yea g
So you got a mega/staff coin???

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Nah. We can use some coins if we want to, but usually we just open a door on the game and press the Service button. That puts a free credit on the game.

Posted by yea g
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........................ service button aye?? where would this button be??

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Lol you need a key to get in.

Posted by yea g
oh man. can you get the keys cut or do they say "do not copy" on them

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Haha I don't think anyone's that desperate to get into the games to be honest. I could get them cut if I wanted but I don't particularly care.

Posted by yea g
I'm sure you could easily make a bit of profit by cutting it and selling on trademe

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Probably. I could also easily lose my job and get into trouble with the law...

Posted by carkitter
Yeah, that's a pretty good reason not to...

Well I got my V640i back from repair, only it's not my V640i. They couldn't repair the fault with they camera after flashing it with the updated firmware it already had so they replaced the phone (again). That makes this the 3rd V640i that I've had. This time I had it serviced in Auckland and insisted they try everything to avoid sending it to the repairer in Christchurch who butchered my first V640i. They had it ready the following day.

Now for the shocking piece of news....

I've swapped the V640i with my son for his 3rd generation iPod Nano!
I will still get to visit the V640i from time to time but as it's seldom used now that I have an iPhone + a Vodem Stick, it made sense to gain the iPod nano and use it as a training device for my wife and younger kids. I"m trying to get my technologically challenged missus to understand Apple devices so that one day she can inherit the iPhone and I can move up to a W715.

Besides my son finally admitted he should have got a V640i instead of the cheap LG he did get recently.

Also Vista loves the V640i! Just tonight I streamed Audio via BT from the V640i to the Vaio speakers using the native Vista BT drivers. Very, very impressed. I really want a W715 now!

Wow, so no more V640i? Is that partly because you're sick of dealing with the problems, or just cause you have the iPhone?

I had a similar ordeal to what you've gone through with the V640 back when I had my old V600i. I had three different V600is due to faulty firmwares, and eventually I gave up on it and got the V630i.

Posted by carkitter
No, I haven't given up on the V640i. I would have kept it if it wasn't going to my son.

I really need wifi in a phone these days. While I miss the V640i camera the most, the small screen and lack of iPhone Apps is making the V640i irrelevant. Seriously!

W715 type feature set is the minimum that will tempt me back to SE. Xperia X1 would be great but not at $1500 when the iPhone only cost me $699.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Hmmm, the W715 is due out late February but it may be worth waiting to see what MWC has to offer from SE before you set your heart on the W715.

I wonder when Vodafone is going to take down the Christmas decks...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@xzite: Welcome mate. It's good to have you round! That's a nice couple of SE phones you've had... I had a V630i too and it was really good, especially for the price. What brings you to Esato?

I've added you to our little New Zealanders list in the first post of this thread.

God I hate school, I had tons of homework over the weekend and never finished it all

What already?!?
Is your teacher punishing you for enjoying the nice weather?

How good is the vodem stick? My dad will probably upgrade to one when he gets about 20 g502s for the business. So which do you reckon would be faster, vodem stick or a g502????

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I bet the G502 is better, but I couldn't say for sure or anything.

Posted by carkitter
I would put my money on the G502 personally.
The latest version of VMC Lite is no better than the last and certainly not as good as simply connecting an A200 SE phone. I dumped the original Vodem after is proved to be slower than the V640i and in constant conflict with freeware sitting in the taskbar. The Vodem stick hasn't had any conflicts, but it hasn't reached download speeds anywhere near those achieved before Xmas by the V640i.

V640i (3.6 mbps) At home - Best 1.4 Mbps, Avg - 0.9Mbps, Best ever - 1.5 Mbps at Uni.
Vodem stick (7.2 mbps) At home - Best 1.0 Mbps, Avg - 0.3 Mbps, Best ever - 1.0 Mbps at home.
V800i (384kbps) At home - Best 386kbps, Avg - 383kbps
Vodem (3.6 mbps) At home - Best 800kbps, Avg - 330 kbps
iPhone 3G (3.6mbps) At home - Best 900kbps, Avg 800kbps, Best ever - 1.7Mbps in Auckland CBD and also in Whangaparoa.

This is anecdotal not scientific and I should say that while the V640i easily gets 1.5Mbps at Uni, the iPhone struggles to beat 0.8Mbps at the same place. All these figures could be dependant on network load at different times too.
Note: Speedtest's on the iPhone are done using an awesome little App, not as modem connected to Laptop like the other devices.

Well right now my dad is on telecom (lol) and he is gonna get a business plan on vodafone with about 20 g502's (including one for himself). I was wondering if its worth spending the extra money to get the vodem stick??

Posted by carkitter
The Vodem stick is 7.2 Mbps so it should be useful for longer as Vodafone's network speed rises. My 3G V800 maxes out at home and I expect the G502 will too, it's just when is the 64 million dollar question. My plan is for 2 yrs so I'm banking on getting a peak speed 'somewhere' that exceeds 3.6Mbps in that time and I can use it with the 3G wifi router I intend to get.

No doubt your dad is looking to purchase the Vodem stick outright? Go with the G502, its nicer to use, quicker to startup and cheaper in the short term plus he can browse on opera mini and poll emails as much as he likes.
Note: you can have a 3GB data plan with a Vodem stick but not with a phone; the maximum for a phone is 1GB (with an extra 1GB for $10 if he goes over).

If you/he can track down a MD400g or MD400 that would be the ticket. SE usability with 7.2 Mbps speed. You can't source them in NZ as far as I know.

Posted by yea g
Well getting a MD400 is out of the question.
Can you switch your data plan over from on account to business??

What do you mean?

Posted by yea g
lol bad engrish.
I meant is it possible to add minutes and stuff to a vodem sim card or transfer the data plan over.

Posted by carkitter
I believe not.
The SIM provided for use in a vodem may be able to have a phone plan added but won't be able to have it's number changed to your original number. Because of the way Vodafone's computer system works, the plan(data or phone) is surgically attached to the phone number on a SIM and therefore cannot move to another On Account number or Business number without breaking the plan and suffering penalty costs, even if you still want to fulfill the term of the plan on the new SIM. I've already found this out the hard way as have other Vodafone Forum members.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I just noticed that Vodafone were surprisingly quick bringing the N96 and 5800 to NZ... I don't know how long ago they started selling them, but I sure wish they were more like that with Sony Ericsson phones!

How was everyone's Waitangi Day?

I spent mine shopping then later on went to the casino where I proceeded to win $60, then lose $80 so I came out $20 worse off. Not too bad considering I had two or three hours of fun there though. Had a few drinks with mates afterwards so it was a good day overall.

Posted by yea g
Well I installed ubuntu on my computer cause windows screwed itself and I'm getting a new hard drive on monday (we have teacher only day).

Posted by carkitter
I was working 9 'til 6 then decided to try downloading the iPhone SDK to my computer but since it is Intel-Mac compatible only I spent the rest of the evening checking out 2nd hand Macs on Trademe. But not seriously.

Interesting how Apple's strategy of major leaps in technology and design has a vicious effect on resale value - used Mac's are cheap not but much use really. Anything pre-Intel looks worthless now.

Edit: Anyone tuning into C4 tonight?
Uchoose 40 topic: Boy bands and Girl bands - ugh!

You could always install mac os on your pc...

Posted by carkitter
I'm not the slightest bit interested in hacking, I'd rather buy a 2nd hand Mac quite honestly.

Posted by yea g
Lol. There is probably something to emulate mac programs on windows.

Yes i agree i have to say the V640i is of course the better model my V630i had 1 birthday & about 5days later it died (white screen of death) but i did adore it its just i adore the V640i so much more i even did my own review (Check it out by clicking here)

My first online review i'm so proud anyway i came to esato as i was a regular on the VodafoneNZ forums however it wasn't really "fun" there was very little input there but the staff are great. Esato has great topics & some great themes for my V640i which is what attracted me to esato.

Also can i just add i'm very honored to have a special place in such a highly popular topic. If this is the way you treat all Esato New Zealanders then i guess i picked the right site for my voicing of opinions & fun.

Thank You Mate

Pity you can't add other users to your friends list or can you i still got my L plates on so forgive me for not knowing some stuff.

NZ Rocks!!!!

@xzite

Have you seen our first post? Feel free to submit any good pics taken with your V630i/V640i.

Posted by yea g
Hmm... Oli's little at the end of the first post screws up the copy in the archive. You could make the "edited by oli" thing black, or just leave it as it is now, or get brix25 to put at the start of his post.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Who uses the archives?

Posted by yea g
Google.

Posted by xzite
@carkitter - Ok i'll add the pictures i've taken in New Zealand that are more scenery then anything.

For example this HUGE ship that was at Napier port, New Zealand.

I just had to stop to get a photo it was huge & my V640i just doesn't show its full size.

Or this one it was taken in Napier also.

I call it the nosebleed shot i'm 3 or 4 stories high.

Yesterday as I walked past the Vodafone store at my local mall, a phone in the window caught my eye. It was the W595 in both black and white variants. I was really surprised to see it so soon and it looks actually quite beautiful for a phone. I went in to try to get a closer look, but they had none apart from two dummies in the window. Can't wait to see it up close!

Posted by yea g
Might have to have a look tomorrow when I'm out. Hopefully the weekday staff aren't as totally useless as the weekend staff.

Posted by carkitter
W595 really is a beautiful phone; I can't wait to see it when it arrives.
