Has anyone found a way to store & view lengthy documents on a k700?

Posted by alv8
There is a bookreader that I found on another forum that could read text files. Try googling for "bookreader.jar". PM me if you want the file.

Posted by alternateve
this is so cool, you mean k700i can read *.txt files?

Posted by haneramper
I believe bookreader works like this:
You have the bookreader program on your computer, which can convert a txt file into a jar file. Send it (the jar file) to your phone, and there you go..

@haneramper
that's kewl...wish i have the k700i already! thanks a bunch!

@alternateve - post ka uli tol pag nakabili ka ng K700i. I can guide you on using Tequilacat Bookreader. Right now my K700i has 2 Alexandre Dumas novellas, 2 science fiction short stories, a little of Victor Hugo... But still way, way below the memory capacity!

And you can also create/edit text files, and send them to a pc in text format. Perfect for composing letters on the phone (like when you're aboard a bus on a long trip) then emailing them from a pc later, in order to save on gprs costs.

i got bookreader on my phone but i can't find the program to convert my text files into jar files. is it in tequilacat also?

Posted by buster
Yes there is a shell that allows you to convert any txt file into jar so you can send it to your phone

Posted by buster
what I cant found in tequilacat is the edit function where is it????

I can only read documents but not edit them or create a new one

Can somebody send me the bookreader thingy???

Posted by JukurenvengeX5
How does it work?? since..It's an invailed file on my laptop but then I transfer it to my S700i and then it has two files of foreign text. Hmm..How do I change a .txt file into a .jar file???Or..Any file that can be read onto the fricken thing!!Oh..aNd..How do I get it to read it?

Posted by DCUK7
To use bookreader you must place the text files you want to view inside the .jar file. You can use WinRAR to open it and place the text files inside then when you transfer to your phone you can select the newly placed files.

And before anyone does mention it, you absolutely cannot get an app that reads text files from the memory as the Java engine is restricted from accessing the phones file system directly.

Posted by ares
You donīt need any java app to read and edit .txt files. Just send it to you k700 (it goes to Others folder), then, click to send it by mms and you will be able to read it and edit it

@Arez
That's supposing you'll be reading a short note only. Try doing it with a whole book -- like Da Vinci Code -- and you'll find out that enjoyable reading is an impossible task without the bookmarking and word search functions. Imagine starting from page 1 everytime you open the file! I don't think you'll bother with the ebook after a few pages. And supposing you're patient enough to scroll down to where you stopped, you'll break the joystick because you'll have no keypad shortcuts.

Can the book reader be used in k500i ?

Posted by haider786
Hi,
Does anybody know how to download .jar file to k700i. I have developed application and downloaded it to my mobile but it is saved in other folder and does not run. I would really appreciate if someone could help me out.
Cheers

Regards
Haider

Posted by clank
Just drop the java file in the root directory ie put drop it at the place where all folders like sound,picture,video etc are and the phone will do the rest.
Do not put it in any folder or it'll be stored in others.

Posted by RayKnight
@c_vignesh: I used bookreader with my T610 and now with my K700, so I'm almost sure you use can too with your K500.

Another option

http://www.t41.nl/content.jsp?section=projects/readme

With k750 it will be easy to have great java apps for this, because java can acess file system, meaning you should be able to send txt files to the phone, and acess them from the java reader app

Posted by govigov
I used that app. But i found a better one, a 1.2mb download to pc and then just browse and show it the text file. It will then output a jar version of the file that you can send to the phone. I currently have all the three lord of the rings in jar format in my phone. Have completed about 10% of the book.

@alv8 AWESOME info thanks dude.
I found bookreader here:

http://tequilacat.nm.ru/dev/br/ref-en.html

It's brilliant. I love it. Now I can catch up on some reading on my k700, perfect solution for me.

@chili, how do you use bookreader to create/edit text files?

Posted by chili
@max_wedge

No dude, I don't use Tequilacat Bookreader to create/edit text files. It's only a reader. What I do is save very short (almost blank) text files to the "Others" folder; these now become my templates, which I edit using the K700i's mms editor.

When you exit the mms editor, the changes to the text file are saved in the Others folder AND the messages "Drafts" folder. So I advise that you delete the resulting mms in the Drafts folder after every editing session, in order to save space.

Posted by max_wedge
@chili, ah I see! Good idea by the way, I didn't realise editing the text files in 'others' via the mms editor changed the 'others' copy as well, I just assumed it only created an mms out of it! Assume nothing, I should have known.

That is another excellent capability for the K700.

I tried created a 1,2mb jar file with Tequilacat Bookreader (harry potter order of phoenix), but it didnīt work on k700i. What is the size limit??? I tried it with smalish texts (some tales from HP Lovecraft) and they worked

In other hand, i made a 1,2 mp jar file with http://www.t41.nl/content.jsp?section=projects/readme and it worked...but is a worse book reader than tequilla cat - you canīt change the size of the text

I guess iīll have to split the whole harrry potter ebook in smaller parts

Posted by max_wedge
try breaking it up into chapters if it isn't already. I likewise couldn't get a 1.4MB textfile to open through bookreader, but I put it in all as one textfile.

I'm going to try breaking it up abit.

Based on my observation, K700i is able to use whatever free memory it has for RAM purposes. So as long as you have enough free space, Tequilat will be accommodated by the K700i via virtual memory. Conversely, if you have a lot of MP3s and photos in the phone, Tequilacat won't be able to uncompress its books at runtime.

This is what makes the K700i so much better than, say, Nokia 6600, which uses only its internal 6mb memory for RAM, and not the MMC.

I've been able to read a 465kb txt file (uncompressed size) with no trouble at all. However, I suggest that txt files be cut up to smaller sizes (200kb and below) so that replying to SMS, especially when T9 is on, won't be slowed down.

Posted by max_wedge
I've got 7MB free, but still can't read 1.4MB (it actually compressed to 350 odd kb as a jar). But that's through bookreader.

I haven't tried really big files in the others folder. Also bookreader might be a bit better if I have more free space.

Posted by chili
@max, 7mb free is more than enough for RAM. I once loaded Bookreader -- total jar file size = 1.8mb, and it worked. But within that 1.8mb was 9 text files. That's an average of 200kb per file. Try cutting up your book into groups of chapters, e.g. Chapters 1-20, etc.

Posted by ares
Nice info mates

Well i noticed bookreader shell lets you set max jar size Iīll set it to 200kb to prevent problems

Posted by chili
@Arez
Actually, jar size can be much bigger than 200kb. It's the uncompressed text file size that you should watch out for. In other words, you can have many text files within the jar file, but each individual text file should preferably be small enough to avoid problems during runtime.

Posted by ares
Ah, i see tks

Posted by max_wedge
yes I thought that might be necessary. Smaller chapters it is!

Thanks a lot for the info mate.
I found that one can overcome the drafts folder problem :
if after editing the text file you press and hold the return key so that it asks you to save the mms in drafts just say "no", the text file will be edited anyway..

The .sis files are not supported by the K700i. They are meant for phones running the SYmbian OS....S60 for e.g

@akshat_bisht
Thanks for the info, bud! I guess I was just too afraid not to save the edited mms in the Drafts folder. I wanted a backup

@SEK7i

File by file analysis here:

1. .ram files are real media's video files, they don't run on k700i, only for the nokia 66 series phones... you can only use .3gp and .mp4 type video files on the k700i.
2. .jar files run fine on k700i(but .jar files meant for java "PHONES" only), if i'm not mistaken there are many types of jar files in exsistence. If you need help installing them mention the software you're using to connect ur phone to the PC.
3. .sis -well that's already answered.

Love ur k700i.

thank you very much for all the answers i got here! next time, will use akshat's advise of using the forum instead of just pm's. it was just that i was so anxious to get immediate response that i pm'd you all instead of first posting here in the forum.

can anyone elaborate to me on how to use the gettext also from tequilacat.. im trying to change some .pdf files into .txt and cant seem to follow these instructions written there..

"To install a filter, extract the downloaded ZIP file into the Filters subfolder of the product root folder. After it, re-start the product. In SSScanner™, select the Text Filters frame and make sure that the new filter is marked as Active; in SSSleuth, add the path to the new filter to the file "KryloffFilters.txt"
