After a thorough evaluation of the usage of bandwidth, during the periods we ran Big Playtime, we had no other choice than to stop it. The Big Playtime sessions was run over a certain period of time and, sadly, some members made scripts, to be warned when a Playtime topic popped up, which on a couple of occasions this actually caused the server to crash.
There might, on the other hand, be "small" Playtimes popping up every now and again. These will be totally unannounced and will be so far between each other that the "trick" on creating scripts will only cause the creator of scripts to suffer usage of his own bandwidth.
You can never be too sure! Small Playtime might occur, out of the blue, and catch everyone by surprise. They will be short and "painful" with only one winner each time and far apart. The prizes will vary from time to time, all depending on what I get my hands on.
Keep in mind guys: No point in waiting for a Playtime, only I know when it will come.
(I might ask Masseur to run the odd one in-between, just to confuse you all )

Esato is better when there's no playtimes...

Posted by Vlammetje
esato is better when there's no ppl asking for playtimes

Posted by Ayush
Yes because of stupid cheaters we have to suffer! :-( @tranquil can't there users be banned?

Posted by georgejason
Ayush is right. Just coz of certain people making mistakes, it aint fair the whole community shud suffer.

Posted by stewie
But why making playtimes anyway? Esato is a great comunity even without playtimes.

Posted by Vlammetje
because probably without the scripts (I doubt there were hundreds of scripts) the server still was seriously overloaded. remember how slow it got?

Posted by BOSSHOGG
Ha! I knew it! I knew there were scripts, some people were just walking away with it. Such a shame :-(

Posted by masseur
well, looking back at the participants of past playtimes, those 50 or 60 members got some extra fun out of Esato, including myself as one of the original players (and winners!), and also later running a few playtime series myself.

but at the end of the day we do have the whole of Esato to consider and the impact Playtime has

bosshogg, as you can see in this post from laffen, the IPs of script runners were blocked

Posted by BOSSHOGG
Can you post the topic number? I'm on wap, thanks.

Posted by masseur
yeah, sorry, didn't realise until after I posted. 43999

Posted by Ayush
Ok so they're blocked and we can get alonger with playtime now :-D

Posted by BOSSHOGG
I searched it before you posted the number, amazing what you can do from wap these days :-) so no naming and shaming? I never realised a script would give such a beacon to narrow it down to particular users. That in itself is amazing.

Posted by Ayush
Ok so whats the latest? Is playtime!!! still alive ?

Posted by tranquil
It's having a well deserved rest.

@masseur & @tranquil - About that Playtime-Beat the Lock contest. I just have a suggestion here - an 'unsolicited advise' at that. Can you just have a different set of format with regards of the style how the game is being played? As we can see in the past, there has been some ongoing clamor, that it is quite very impossible for everybody to join the game since we are living in different timezones? Maybe that's why the contest was just played on different days (occasions) back then. My point is, instead of playing it in the sort of 'just' the fastest-fingers-first method (although basically that will still apply), why don't you have it in the 'trivia question' type of game? It will be more adventurous if the 'Qs' that will be asked had some relation to esato's history (also to test member's full awareness of the site), newcomers will just have to browse at past posts to be educated. Say, when was esato.com been online? Who made the very first 'official' post here at esato? Who's the very first member to be 'banned' at esato (I just might be the next?) . . . so on and so forth. Now, again, with regards to the different timezones - I guess in a way it will also be possible if you 'randomly' send a 'chosen' member a 'pm' about the trivia of the day/week/month - and give that chosen member to reply in say, 48 hrs. failure to do so will just mean that he loses his/her chances of winning, and look for another potential winner - to be fair, member's name will be drawn thru - computer generated raffle type, or whatever you decide about it. As I have experienced 'once' I won in the Playtime contest, there had been some confusion felt during that time, because one of the partcipants was caught (by the pms - don't know how?) cheating. So, by means of this new method, it will surely be a 'cheat-safe' game to speak!
Well, those were just a 'small' suggestion here mates. I am just not 'totally' in favor of the old system/rules that apply to the Playtime-Beat the Lock Contest . . .
Thanks!

I still didnt get the rules in that game, however its funny to watch the others to play.

Posted by *Jojo*
@bobafett - Were you pertaining to the suggestion I am making here, re: new play scheme at 'Playtime-Beat The Lock Contest'? . . . . Just try reading my post - again and again. After that lengthy post, I might just fall to sleep here if I'll make some clarification mate - it is already 10:27p in my place that's why . . .

Posted by BobaFett
@jojo the trivial isnt a bad idea, depends on the mods. Technical questions and facts about /// and se fones would be great.

Posted by *Jojo*
@bobafett - Yes! idea will greatly depend with the mods approval and with @laffen as well . . .

Posted by Bianca
Great idea

Guys, you all seem to forget something; the prices. Who will be donating prices this time? Previously they have been donated by Sonyericssonman, SE them selves and Masseur and me has given away our personal items. There is a limit to how much can be expected from all mentioned above, and you guys don't seem to be satisfied with just the SE necklaces anymore.

Yeah... Where to get prizes from?

Posted by *Jojo*
@tranquil - Now I know why the 'Playtime - Beat the Lock Contest' was halted there momentarily . . . I know that every contest will not survive long if it will not be supported by sponsors - entirely ! So, it was @sonyericssonman (so with rest of the sponsors as well) who were doling out those prizes that we have won at Playtime. I know that this proposal of mine will quite be very difficult to come in to being, but I guess in order for the member's 'desire' to reinstate the 'Playtime-Beat The Lock' contest, the esato team will just have to make some drastic moves here.
To have the contest back, each 'active' member will have to cash-in/dole out 'voluntarily' from their savings, say, US$ 2.00 per month per member, when accumulated will buy a nice/decent prize up for grabs. With the help of @gelfen here, he's quite good in making statistical reports as well - if my memory serves me right, by using his expertise/talent he can help you compute how much money will be earned if we are to base the total number of active members in the duscussion forum and with that of the dormant ones, say for the last/previous 8 months . . . This task will surely be a 'herculean task' one, but we are also to remember what others ask of us - 'When was the last time you did something for the FIRST time?' I guess this will be it mates!
In sending the money, we don't have to totally rely/depend on the PayPal thing (not everyone is aware of that), one other solution will be by sending thru the normal channel - reputable international banks. Let us not forget as well the ever reliable 'wiring' of money funds thru - Western Union Money Transfer!
Some will surely say that this idea is a cynical one, but let us not also forget (specially the past winners) that not everything in this world is only attained one-way, there is also the so-called give and take thing. If you take something one day, somehow you will also have to learn to give it back - maybe to someone else (not necessarily to the same person) and just don't worry about the money, God knows and will find a way how to give those blessings back, as they say, in a hundred fold. Just look at @laffen, he may not be that rich to run this site individually (?), but because of the good deed that he is doing to us - 34K + members here, I know that God will give back these things to him (so goes with the past Playtime sponsors). @laffen at one time was in dire strait, to the extent that this site was about to be shut-down then - remember people?
Now, in order for the 'contest' to be on-line once again, we just have to make new schemes as to how to get sponsors for the prizes . . . we have to think of some drastic measures to enjoy it back - somehow, somewhere - someday!
Hallelujah ! Praise The Lord !

Posted by kimcheeboi
I'll be glad to sponsor a playtime!

Posted by *Jojo*
@kimcheeboi - Start 'wiring' that US$ 2.00 of your share for this month of April ! By the way, if I may just ask, is there any 'limit' - minimum amount required when wiring money somewhere else. Maybe the proposed US$ 2.00 will not be accepted, and will only reach half-way of it's destination ?

Posted by kimcheeboi
Am i allowed to create a contest thread because i want to give away a dongle or something but i want to make my own contest... Mods, please pm me!

Posted by *Jojo*
@kimcheeboi - Are you trying to donate an SE accessory to esato? With that, maybe the Playtime-Beat The Lock Contest will be on, even for a day !

Posted by masseur
guys, please read our lips!

there won't be any playtime! for the forseeable future. sorry, but it was good while it lasted

Posted by *Jojo*
@masseur - 'read my lips' - Just like the style of George Bush when he makes speeches !

Posted by masseur
is it? I try to avoid watching his speeches, sorry if thats the case.

anyway, its sad to say that for reasons already given it will be quite a while before there are serious playtimes, just the odd one off than tranquil already mentioned

quizes etc have been suggested before but I can't remember (and am too tired right now to seach) why that idea was discarded. oh well...

Posted by Nitro Fan
what is playtime? I am confused please help pps:

Posted by Elrond
I think, because not everyone could answer it and that way as it is has everyone a chance to win.

Posted by masseur
playtime was a game played here on Esato with prizes to be won.

One of the moderators would start a thread entitled Playtime!!! and nominate the winning reply position. The person who replied in that position won the prize.

We also ran series of playtimes where the winner got 10 points and the person prior and post to the winner got 5 points each. The points accumulated until the end of the series (usually over a few days) and the winner was the member with the most points.

here you can see past scoreboards

Posted by *Jojo*
@masseur - YES! I do still recall that 'last'? Playtime contest, where active participants get to accumulate their day's accomplishments thru the 'points' system, and whoever ranked in first after a week's marathon - highest pointer tends to win a really nice prize. The one I saw wherein the grand winner should have gotten a nice SE accessory, but instead, after not totally finishing the entire contest, @tranquil apologizes, and the contest was abruptly put into end, and will just dole out an SE necklace (?) as the grand prize for the winner instead !
There had been some 'problems' there I suppose?

Posted by kimcheeboi
What i want to do is have a month long contest where people have to do certain things and accumulate points, them the winner gets a really nice se accessory like a headset or dongle, but i want to sponsor the contest myself, with the mods and >500s as judges.

Posted by Vlammetje
but you want to run it ON ESATO and I thought Esato's bandwidth problems /server crashing were the reason NOT to have anymore playtimes?

Me thinks you may need to set up your own little place to do the contest on

Posted by *Jojo*
But as the mod had just said, it will 'still' take a while in order to reinstate the ever famous - 'Playtime' contest here . . .

Posted by gforce23
:-(

Posted by kimcheeboi
Well, i pm'ed laffen so we'll see what happens

I thought I gave the answer here...

Posted by Ayush
But what if [b]kitcheboi[i] is ready to sponsor?

Posted by tranquil
Vlammetje is right in this reply.

Posted by *Jojo*
@ayush - So, you think that my 'idea' is a brilliant one ? First, I really thought I am just good at posting threads ideal for the 'Garbage Forum/Thread' - at least, at last, someone noticed my reply here . . .thanks mate!
@tranquil - That's nice! You already have some sort of an 'automatic' response to such questions to be raised which has relevance to the Playtime Contest, or was it just that we don't fully read replies on past posted remarks ?
