I agree. The build quality seems excellent. Not even had the usual SE squeaky battery cover syndrome happen on mine. Display is nice and sharp too.
Just the small amount of firmware bugs which hopefully will get sorted with ICS

I think Ray is the most under appreciated mobile phone on the market.
No one really knows how capable it is and how solid.

I don't regret a second migrating from X10.

yes it should ; with a 3rd party video player from Android market

Does the update to 2.3.4 and whatever Sony bundle with it lose me any features ? (e.g. I take it that major things are unchanged, like the availability of a Japanese keyboard).

Of less concern, what do I get apart from internal bug fixes / optimisations, apart from some new camera modes, anything else of note ?

Thanks, updated and all is well (though I too miss the screen power-off animation tha makes it look like a CRT switching off, strangely screen power-on now has a little bit of expand-effect animation that's quite subtle but makes it look a bit like CRT power-on if you're looking carefully).

need help. my ray has suddenly defaulted to the japanese keyboard. when i select international as the default or even selecting swiftkey x it just goes back to japanese keyboard.

its doing my head in. anybody have any ideas apart from reflashing as i have a lot installed.

Posted by Rookwise
Nevermind. Seems to have sorted itself out now. Back to using the International keypad.

Posted by Bonovox
that's really odd!!

Posted by Rookwise
Yes very. Giving me more reason to get my x10 back out if things carry on. Just hope ics sorts most of the problems out with the phone.

Posted by jplacson
Do you have alternative input apps installed? keyboards? etc?

I had that on my neo when I installed swiftkey x, I had to uninstall swiftkey to get back to the international keyboard

Posted by Rookwise
I tried uninstalling swiftkey x incase that was the problem but it didn't work.

As mentioned. Everything is now back to normal. I didn't do anything it just switched back from Japanese to International Keyboard on its own.

Must have been it's time of the month. The phone is sooo tempermental its worse than my girlfriend for causing hassle.

Posted by Bonovox
Just long press in texting screen & choose the right keyboard

Posted by Rookwise
Did that. Just defaulted to the Japanese keyboard even after selecting international or swiftkey x.

Posted by Bonovox
Hmmm, seems the Ray still has some bugs

Posted by bronxdude
new firmware out. .062 is the version

Posted by Rookwise
Not available for Generic UK phones yet.

Posted by OffLineR
What is new?

BTW, I am so happy with my phone I don't care what is going to be offered with a new FW

Love this phone so much.

I did remove the oem screen protector as well.
IT had tiny scratches on it which I hate.
But it was smoother with it.
I might buy a new screen protector for the smoothnes.

Well,as is no more I decided to buy a Ray again. Second time lucky this time round it's better. Build is better, firmware more stable it's just excellent!! I too removed the sheet & it's better imo. Anyway I have noticed the battery life is excellent too.

well, here I thought that you really stay away from Sony Ericsson/Sony since you had your Arc, Neo, Ray, Play, Mini's, and again Ray and said lots of good things about the phone from day 1, and also said lots of really bad things too when you found a fault or it does not meet your needs and switched or tried Nokia, Samsung and HTC, and now here you go again, back to SE/Sony

It's like a life cycle for you

anyways good luck with your Xperia Ray

Posted by hihihans
@mhyke. That's Bono

Posted by Bonovox
Yes I came full circle. Its not that the Ray or any other Xperia never met my needs that's not the right word. I guess I was becoming a little over fussy and the Ray had many annoying niggles but its much better now IMO. I also have the HTC Incredible S(terrible name) which I love. I do love the Ray this time. I miss Xperia and look forward to new Sony range although I always still have my views on quality

Posted by Bonovox
Cos I recently bought a new Ray I got a free 90 unlimited music download code & 5 free movie downloads too And the Ray came with the Sony Ericsson live headset

Posted by hihihans
How is the quality of the Live headset. I'm thinking of buying one.

Posted by Bonovox
Excellent

Posted by Rookwise
Mine came with the Livesound headset as well. Never bothered using it due to the ear phone type. Still use my ds220 with hpm66's for my music unless the phone is plugged into my car.
Only time I use headphones is when I'm in the gym.

Posted by Bonovox
They are worth quite a bit them headphones I think??

Posted by Rookwise
Yea bout £60ish

Posted by Bonovox
I listened to some Pink Floyd on them 2 nights back sounded fine. My live headset

Android is making its way. They cannot follow Samsung's pattern

I just received an update notification on my Ray for version 4.0.2.A.062 .
Anyone else? I'm a bit reluctant installing an update and being one of the very first ones...

Posted by Bonovox
Really?? Mine is 042 I will check myself but I have no notifications as yet.

Posted by Rookwise
Confirmed available for Generic sim free UK models. File size is 169mb

Android version 2.3.4
Baseband 8x55A-AAABQOAZM-203028D-64
Kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf
SEMCUser@SEMCHost#1
Build number 4.0.2.A.0.62

I chose to just update instead of update and reset as I've got too much to reinstall and not a lot of time. When I get more time I'll be doing a complete update and reset.

Cant see anything different from just a quick look as my battery has nearly had it and needs charging. Perhaps just some background system update ???

Edit
One thing I have noticed is that the phone seems quite a lot quicker accessing and scrolling through items. Could be just me though with it being an update. It might have cleared a few things out. However. Its much faster than before.Previously my Ray was really slow and unresponsive.

Forgot where I read this but apparently this update one of the fixes is better memory management. I noticed I had more ram than usual too.

3d on battery.
Wow mate.
I'll never see that

Posted by Bonovox
Definitely noticed a speed improvement. And as for better memory management well it does seem so as in standby with normal back ground stuff running I had 208mb ram free. Before it hovered around 179 down to 150mb ram.

Posted by Bonovox

The amount of free ram on standby is much more now from before.

Posted by Kimi
Looks like this version cannot be (easily) rooted any more. Since I removed a lot of crap stock apps and autostart services (facebook, TimeScape, Twitter etc.) my Ray is very fast and stable and I like to keep it that way. As I also have around 205mb RAM free in standby, I don't see any advantage for me.

So I think I'll wait until ICS arrives and then have a look...

How do you manage to get that amount of free memory? On my Ray, the free memory is around 75-85 MB
