X-Ray shows up in Japan.

Posted by toddie
Just talked to SE support (Germany) and according to their information it is only "a matter of days" until the Xperia Ray hits retail stores.

Can be bought in Denmark now from a webshop, but they write that all their phones are german. I suppose that doesn't matter much when it's Android phones, since you can change the language in those?

Agreed. I do not think that there will be much of a difference; probably some of the printed sheets supplemented in the packaging. But that should be it.

I really want this phone...

Can someone please do a video-recording on an Arc + Ray at the same time to compare the audio volume in both? I don't want to risk getting Neo quality again. (Or worse: Vivaz quality)

I think no one can make that comparison right now, well except for those who got it for the sake of review, and it is not released yet, even though someone has a Ray, and compare the video audio volume or any kind of test, it will not be fair, because of their software, right now Arc/Neo/Play got the latest software and those phones like Ray and Mini are prototype and their software might still be in Beta, and they are subject to change for better or worse

but if you haven't heard the latest update for Arc/Neo and Play they already have the Stereo Video Recording, the 2nd Mic already enabled while recording some Video.

I got an Arc, and i can tell that the recorded sounds now is better than before

I've never had a problem with the quality on Arc. Arc always recorded fine videos with fine audio. Only the 2 Neos I tried didn't.

But I've just learned now, when comparing the video-samples at GSMArena in their First look at page 4 video-sample and Review at page 6 video-sample, it's clear that they've used 2 different Neos. The audio quality in those video-samples are very different. "First look" has crap quality (like the two Neos I bought ), while the video-sample in the review has Arc-quality.

Are you now telling me that it was a software issue that only caused the trouble on some Neos. That sounds unlikely to me.
Anyway, due to all the trouble I had with those two Neos, and struggling to get my money back, I'm hesitating a bit buying the Ray.

The video-sample at GSMArena done by Ray has good quality with good audio, but I'd like to hear/see that at least twice.

I never tried NEO, because until now it's now available here in my place so i bought an Arc

Well, it's hard to say whether that is a Software issue or a Hardware one, but basically right now with the latest software 4.0.A.2.368, all xperia can record in stereo quality, but those Preview/Review on the Internet comparing Arc and Neo in Video Recording have not the latest software, and Neo is not doing well in that department, both Arc and Neo are just using the main Microphone.

Maybe you should try asking someone with NEO and with this latest software 4.0.A.2.368

I think he's the one who can help you.

Posted by mr_lou
Nah, it doesn't matter anymore, because I returned both Neos.

Ray also has a better size for me, so I'd really like to try that one. Thinking about buying from Play.com, since it's 130 euro cheaper than a local webshop here. But I'm also thinking about waiting and seeing more reviews and video-samples online before I buy.

Says Sep 9th on play.com now, "pre-order" at expansys and isn't to be seen at se-store.co.uk, in other words hang on for another month or so I guess.

They changed the date then. It used to say August 15th (today actually).

Here is a video sample shot using ray, under - let's say - very challenging video and especially audio conditions

Rog, this video is impressive in every way in my opinion!

Has anyone seen any image samples yet??

Couldn't do a video/cam test since this was a demo unit...but one of my main concern was the ease of one-handed operation. I'm quite fond of my X10 Mini Pro, and the interface of the Mini/Mini Pro line... but the screen and thinness of the ray is hard to ignore. It's quite responsive, I hope they release it soon! The aluminum frame feels really nice too! I was hoping the rear cover would've been aluminum too, then again it might cause reception issues.

My first hands-on with the xperia ray testing one-handed operation

jplacson - is that in jump megamall?

Posted by jplacson
Yes it is. Ironically, the Sony Ericsson Concept Store right across it doesn't have it.

Posted by amardeep
Given the small-ish screen size, is the qwerty keyboard usable in portrait mode, or best left for landscape ?

Posted by jplacson
It's actually usable in both, I prefer it in portrait mode since landscape leaves you with a ticker tape sized screen.

If you've ever used the X8, it's pretty close to using that.

I, however, prefer the T9/multitap on a screen this small. It may take some getting used to but in the end, I feel it's much more efficient. Since I got used to using my X10 MP when closed, the T9 and multitap of the xperia ray feels WAAAAAY better.

Thanks for the info !

that's a pity. ' s concept stores here are crappy.

i was there last night, but didnt check out jump. will try to go there next weekend

how's the screen quality?

Posted by jplacson
Screen quality is excellent indoors. I can't vouch for direct "Philippine" sunlight. Very close to iPhone 4 quality, although I wasn't able to do a side by side at max brightness, I'm guessing the iPhone 4 still has a brighter screen.

SE said Ray is 20~25% Brighter than Arc, IMO ARC is already Bright for me @ 100%, I reduced it to 75% brightness, just to conserve battery.

So if SE is telling the truth, then this is great news, and might be competing against LG Optimus Black

PS: Xperia Ray in Japan is Advertised as a Ladies Phone with the Colors Pink/White and Gold, and Black is not available in Japan

mhyke, I doubt the ray was meant to compete against the LG Black market segment simply due to the much smaller screen size [at 3.3" vs 4"] the LG Black seems targeted at the regular 4" segment, hence that would be the arc's turf.

The ray's screen is only slightly larger than the X8, albeit packing more than 2x the pixels.

Design-wise, the LG looks a lot like the iPhone. I was never a fan of the rounded corner designs... never liked it on the iPhone... certainly don't like it on the others. Some say the ray looks like the Nokia X6... maybe so... except the X6 is a Nokia , and it runs on Symbian (I was only a fan of UIQ, nothing else Symbian had remotely impressed me)

I can't wait for the ray to be available. I think all manufacturers should learn from Apple on how to announce products that are ready to be sold... not 1 year ahead. You waste so much potential sales on hype when you can't deliver within a month.

Oops, i made a mistake, what i was saying, I think that Xperia Ray can compete in the Screen Brightness against LG Optimus Black, just in that department sorry...

Optimus Black have 700 NITS, while Xperia Arc have 394, and SE said it's 20-25% more brighter than Arc. lets wait for GSM arena's Preview/Review of their Xperia Ray

but yea, they are different in market, and LG/Samsung phones they all look the same to me

OMG. I'm in LOVE with a little fella named "RAY"! It's so pretty and tiny in person but amazingly fast. I kinda wish that the back cover was metal as well but overall i'm like "i gotta have this one!" The black on the screen isn't as dark as say that of the xperia mini pro but it's still pretty good.

I know what you mean! It's so sleek. I too wished the back cover was aluminum as well, but I figured that it would affect reception... So I don't really mind

Is it true that it is already available in UK? Take a look at http://www.mytrendyphone.co.u[....]ny-ericsson-xperia-54625p.html

Reports said Vodafone and O2 will have Ray as soon as next week

quite a few on ebay.... best I can see is about $380aud delivered. Its an intro price, once more sellers have it, I wont be surprised if it drops to the $300ish mark very quickly.

I am mighty tempted to get one, who else is thinking of buying?

Lets hope it drops a bit in the next 2 days, that way I can have one sent to my parents in Aus, who can bring to me in Europe!

(i am really really torn though, this, mini/mini pro, neo, arc, pro )

Posted by jplacson
>500 I know what you mean... I'm very happy with my X10 Mini Pro and was all set to upgrade to the new Mini Pro... But after demoing the ray, and seeing the screen first hand... It's settled, I'm upgrading to the ray once it's available. Overall volume of the ray is much less then the Mini or Mini Pro due to the thinness of it. I got used to the 12 key input on the Mini Pro and was happy to discover that the ray has it as well. If only the ray also came with the 4 corner UI... Perhaps SE can release it as an app like Timescape

jplacson - i went to jump earlier, and fell inlove even more with ray. i love the screen. you wont notice the pixels.

Posted by jplacson
Bronxdude, right? The quality of the screen is almost identical to the Retina Display of the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4

Posted by bronxdude
jplacson - yup. almost identical.

too bad the phone doesnt have any music content preloaded...would love to test some tunes

and I like how the ray's gold is not too flashy-girly

Posted by Bonovox
Ray looks good how much will it be??

Posted by Arne Anka
In Sweden preorder prices suggests a price as low as around £275 (312 EUR).

Posted by Bonovox
Not bad & as phones do they will come down in price fast

Posted by jplacson
I hope all the 2011 xperia models can run 4.0 when it's released.

Posted by Alihosny
i think have signed to be a google partner or something like that, companies who are google parners supposedly have provide software updates for their phones fo 18 months.(i will try to find the link for you).on the technical side, i think 2011 phones can run the next version of android easily.a 1ghz processor and 512mb ram can run windows xp:D.

Have you noticed that in most Ray's videos the screen is not as responsive as on the mini/pro or even Arc,Neo and Pro? Also it's benchmark is lower ....
(Ray +/-1350... Mini/pro up to 1800+)...
[ This Message was edited by: pt020 on 2011-08-29 14:04 ]

Posted by Shino03
It doesn't look unresponsive to me. The benchmark is lower because the ray has higher resolution than the mini and pro.

I know but the screen resolution of the Ark and Neo-Pro is the same as Ray and it is also 200 points lower then they are.

Posted by jplacson
I stopped believing in benchmarks. They're not a reflection of real-world performance.

The ray's screen responsiveness is quite good, at par with the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4. The only reason it would not respond is if someone's finger has thick callouses... I play the guitar so my left hand fingertips have thick callouses. I have issues every now and then with capacitive screens, even the iPad. But it's not a big deal, I just noticed.
