UK users will find a new firmware update available for their arc. Tried updating mine and it did not update correctly, stopped midway in the update process, and screwed up my handset. My handset now does not switch on at all! Tried updating several times to no success and today posted it to the Sony Ericsson repair center. Very disappointed with the update glitches as many people are facing the same http://www.xperiablog.net/201[....]mware-update-hits-uk-handsets/

My Arc is suffering from battery drain problem. Some people said removing Google Maps update helps, how the hell do I remove it? No, how can I even update it? When I checked market.android.com, the latest version was 5.3.1 and I have 5.0.0 on my device. So, it is not even up to date. It is not there in the android market and when I open it, I can use it just fine.

By the way, I keep Bluetooth/Bravia Engine/data transfer/Wi-Fi..etc turned off. I also deleted some apps. I will try and see if anything happens. From what I have seen, the users either have excellent battery life or terrible battery life even with the battery drainers are turned off. Strange.

Anyone notice that the timescape widget it buggy as hell.

I've had a few forced closes already. Might have to remove it. Pity really because I liked the one on the x10.

In regards to the people complaining about battery life.

Just normally using up the battery and fully charging it (been almost a week since I got it).

Anyways, I use ATK and I turned off bravia and my 3g is on. Fully charged when I went to work. Made a few calls, facebook, gmail and used the cam. Surfed a little, downloaded a couple of apps.

Back home now after 12 hours and my battery is sitting at 83%.

I think that is very good battery life!

That's so damn cool. I think any SE model should have a white variant

I bet it won't happen for a while yet if it does cos of stock shortages from Japan

Posted by HYPER-X10
Bonovox, I've got 2 arcs here and neither of them have an issue with feeling flimsy or squeaking. I can make them squeak if I try hard enough, but definitely not in normal use. I've owned a lot of phones in my time, and the build feels quite solid to me.

I can only assume there was an issue with your device, and thought this info might help with your decision to try again with the arc.

Posted by Ricky D
@CELL-P I very much doubt it's Google Maps causing your battery issue. It's more likely to be a widget such as timescape widget trying to update too often or just the battery isn't worn-in enough, try full charge cycles and experimenting with your settings and widgets.

To update your maps try searching for Google Maps in the market (NOT the 'My Apps' link) it should come up. It could be that it doesn't appear in 'My Apps' because it's not been associated in the market. This can happen to any appication if it's installed through any way other than through the market. Simply finding it in the market and installing from there links the app to 'My Apps' and so you can be informed of future updates automatically.

What is the size of contact picture to fit the full screen when calling/receiving call in Xperia Arc?

Posted by rickster2kuk
The battery level part of the settings should also tell you if any widget is consuming more power than normal.

Watch news/weather widgets that update very often. You'll find that you can change the interval for updates which will save the battery. Unfortunately some apps don't have this, I think Sky News app was draining my battery big time - so I uninstalled it!

Had my Arc now for 2 weeks, my battery life is fine as long as I keep the screen brightness at around 1/3 of maximum. Gets me through a full day of calls, emails and plenty of messages as well as some music and games.
Think the Timescape might be a major drain. Since I have stoped using it battery life has improved!

Its a great phone and I still enjoy looking at it everyday . Only problem I do have is that the Qwerty is not the best, think I need to download a different one... after two weeks still not used to it.

Anybody any good suggestions for Arc? Don't mind paying....

For all those who want to debrand the Arc...

I only have to wait till payday 28th and I can order my upgrade and then have to wait a further few days for it to be delivered lol then I can be in the smartfone bandwagon oooooooh the possibilities

Posted by SKIBBE
I have managed to delete all my contacts but an hour later, i got a note that said something similiar to "to many contacts deleted (107 contacts) delete/undu" and i choosed undo, and all my contacts was restored, but now to the problem

i cant sync my contacts with facebook anymore. i have uninstalled facebook, reinstalled rebooted, removed all facebook data, but they never sync (meaning downloading pictures and beein integrated with the phone) tips? (not in the mood to do a factory reset)

oooh I can upgrade early and get the Arc at a cost of £30 £30 month contract, 600mins, unlimited txts and 500MB of mobile internet and webmail which is better than my current £25 month contract as I only get 300mins & unlimited txt, not that I actually use all if any of my mins a month

Now if the lady will let her man splash out £30 rather than wait 2months hehehe

I upgraded today from my £25 plan a month early to a £20 a month plan with 600 mins unlimited txts 500mb internet and a FREE Xperia Arc

Try calling your provider and scaring them by telling them you are going to leave them they will ask why and you
just say the upgrade deals I saw on your website were not as good as the ones offered by other companies... it worked with Orange straight away the guy said "nonono I can get you a much better deal than the one on the site because you have been with us for so long "18months"...

I saved more than £240 on my monthly payments and £120 on the phone which I will receive for free on Tuesday.

I'm not sure that wud work with me the fone is only costing me £30 coz i'm upgrading way before the time I should be, but I may give it a go when i've got some money anyways lol i'm with vodafone

Posted by Xajel
Sadly, unlocking the bootloader is a one-way process... and if you want to do updates you have to use FlashTool; SEUS won't work on unlocked bootloaders...

with vodafone you can upgrade within the last 70days of your contract, but from looking about on the website I can upgrade with the last 120 I think it is, or something like that, only thing being is that I have to pay a lil bit for the fone, depending on length of new contract, 24months the fone is £30 18months the fone is £90 I think and 12months fone is over £150, I can only really afford the 24months at this moment in time.

suppose I could wait until my contract is due for upgrade in june, but thats like 2months away and I want the fone now lol

Hi, not sure if it`s just me but when i set the Alarm and the phone is switched off the phone wont switch back on to sound the alarm. All my other SE phones did, just wondering if it`s an Android thing?

No biggie just thought i could save battery life overnight when not in use.

Posted by goldenface
Does the Arc have the Back Up & Restore application? I can't seem to find it on my Play.

I think it's an Android thing. Or rather, that the alarm goes of even though the phone is turned off is a former SonyEricsson thing. Symbian phones also have to be powered on in order to have the alarm to go off.
The other way around can be annoying as well, if you, for example, turn oft the phone while watching a movie or attend a wedding, the alarm will still go off, if it's set, despite the phone being turned off.
I'm not saying that either way is right or wrong, it's simply different design decisions, and there are pros and cons with both. One could only wish that the end user was allowed to decide which.

Posted by SKIBBE
@rmk152 it's android and uiq could not do that either. hade the same "proplems" a few years back when i got my first smart phone. when you turn it of it's OFF

No, it is neither available on Arc, nor on Play...

@goldenface

I think the Backup & Restore apk from X10 is available for download somewhere on xda but on the X10 is built for 2.1 i.e. it's designed to read and write to the data structure of SE's 2.1, not 2.3. So I wouldn't bank on it working on your play/arc. saying that, I don't know the exact differences between 2.1 and 2.3 so it might be worth a shot.

Just make sure you get the X10 version not the mini/mini pro version as that one I'm 99% sure doesn't work.

Update: Sony Ericsson has confirmed that you will be able to still get SEUS updates as long as you carry on using stock SE firmware, even if the bootloader is unlocked. (Thanks @TheHurf!)

Instead of turning it off, simply put it on Flight mode... That'll be your best bet...

just wanted to point out that the SE Japan AmbientTime Home launcher works perfectly on the arc...beautiful launcher and lockscreen plus u can remove the names of the shortcuts on the homescreen so it looks more minimalistic...

After 2 weeks:

Almost perfect. Battery usage is OK but could be a bit better.

Issue: when connecting through USB to the PC, mass storge mode is screwed (or am I missing something?) - the access to sd card is forbidden
and when the phone is in media transfer mode PC doesn't see the phone once connected.

But toggling between modes on the phone (while connected) enables media transfer mode and since than it works.
Strange, looks like a bug.

when you connect phone in mass storage mode, in drop down notification there is "connect memory card" (or something like that)

I had that problem when I had mine it was not like previous Xperia phones where you get 3 options pop up on screen. One option saying connect phone

Posted by SKIBBE
Since i got my Arc, Handcent is giving me alot of FC and is slower than on my x10
even the arc GUI is sometimes slow, did get some strange gfx bug with my lockscreen earlier today, all graphics was missplaced and i had to kill it, the touch was broken too.

looks like i need a factory reset/repair

Posted by Bonovox
Oh no

Posted by xenia
Just restart your phone. Some lags coud happens.

Posted by MyP910
its already more than a week I'm having my Arc... and it is still running superbly fast. I don't use handcent like I did on X10 since the stock sms apps is good and fast. on X10, the stock sms app is slow and makes me switch to handcent. Now, I don't need handcent.

I've tried several thing to make the phone slow (just to test the limit)... but so far the response has no lag at all. At this point of time, the phone is flawless.

I don't know how to grab a screenshot of my phone without root. Seems all the apps on the market for this require root.
But if anyone wants to give AmbientTime Home a try, I have the apk. Just let me know.

Also, i've noticed that if you shortcut your settings on the homescreen, there's an option for 'Dock Settings'. anyone know if there's a dock for our lovely arcs on the way or is this a generic gingerbread thing? I think the positioning of the ports on the phone makes it impossible for a dock to happen...still, one can dream...

Posted by SKIBBE
@xenia have rebooted several times, helps the lag, but not the FC/slow in Handcent i guess it have become slow due to all new updates and not optimized for arc(2.3)?

I want a dock station! but yes when i was running custom 2.2 rom on my x10 i had the dock option so it's a generic android feature

Hey guys & girls, looks like Bin4ry over at XDA just got root access on the arc!!!

Open bootloader and root = AWESOME

Head over here for info:

This is great news for the modding comunity and themes (making the gui stand out not just the arc design)

Guys I renew my question:

Does anybody know how Missing Link works?
I would love to sync my Calendar and Contacts with Outlook.
The app is not cheap so I need to know how it performs before purchase.

Posted by Piecan
Um... sorry to be dense among all you clever chaps, but could someone explain what opening bootloader and root means please? I've got an Arc on order which will be locked to a network and so I've got to get it unlocked first, do I then do this other thing to make it work better? It's interesting what you all contribute even if I don't understand all of it.
