Hi all, I just got my Arc today (love it), I bought it here in China. Thing is, it has no Market app. How do I get it? Do I need to change the firmware? What's the easiest way to do that? Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Where did you get it and what colour? I'm in Beijing and I'm looking for silver. Expansys China don't have it in yet and I'm not sure which other online retailers to trust.

I got mine in Suning. They have both colours available. I got the 8GB card and a pouch, but not HDMI cable. Also got free shampoo(!) and a kettle!

@doministry- There is no way you can ave the original gmail app to store your mails offline. You can use the other email app and configure your gmail settings there and it will store them offline.

Man , i really don't know what Fakhro is thinking
they r the main reason SE has bad reputation in bahrain

they r always late
more expensive than other countries
and worse, they don't bring other colors, they always bring only one color which they like,
and u the one who don't like it, u can go and kill ur self

i want play, i think am gonna order if from expansys, or wait a week or 2 maybe i can got from
KSA, or Dubai...

Waah, finally I found a person who understand and feel what I feel !!

This is Fakhro man, this is Fakhro... I hope any other place ( like axiom ) bring the phone soon...

I didn't use expansys before and I know nothing about their after sale services and warranty... I can buy it from KSA by some websites ( direct bank transfeer like Mashae'l Al-Aasima - مشاعل العاصمة ) and they will ship it with Aramex or DHL which is fine... the problem is when you have any problem with the phone you have to send it back to them as you don't know when the situations in Bahrain will be okay ( you know all the things that happens now, you can't even go to KSA )

@shanespencer I'm thinking of going to the DaZhong over the road and having a look if they have it. If Suning has it I think they might. I'd prefer a European package though with the HDMI. I know they like to throw in the other free stuff but I don't really need another kettle or George Foreman. How much did you pay for it?

Lol seriously? So what is Gmail app for?
What if somebody has 1000 emails??

Quick question to those who have both X10 and arc, do the physical buttons on the arc feel exactly the same as the X10? I've noticed that after using the home button on my X10 for over the year i've had it, the colour/paint is starting to strip...I'm hoping the arc doesn't have this problem as I'm sure everyone uses the home button a lot. still, can't wait for my arc to arrive...

@doministry
the brightness on the power widget should do the same thing on the arc as on the X10. press it once and it goes to low brightness, press again to use automatic brightness, press again to use high brightness. you can set the high brightness to as bright as u want...this is how it is on the X10 and looking from other peoples posts it seems its the same on the arc. hope this helps.

@doministry + anyone else with similar concerns

Google expect you to always have an data connection to your phone, which in my opinion isn't unreasonable as most providers offer 'unlimited' or high usage data policies for smartphones nowadays.

They also expect you to use the labelling and searching systems in gmail.

Bearing these in mind it's not unreasonable for their gmail app to local cache only the more recent emails and call the rest on user request. Use the search to find specifically what you want instead of filling your SD card with 1000s of emails that you don't reference on a daily basis.

I have 26,000+ emails in all mail combined and I have no issues at all with searching for older emails, loading emails from labels etc. My total bandwidth usage per month for emails is about 20-30MB (I receive about 20-30 important and anything from 50-100 spam per day).

If you really want local storage of all your emails do as se_dude says and use the email app, download your 100 emails and fill up for card.

..and with the brightness, it should be in Settings > Display > Brightness. Does that not show you the brightness control slider?

I know what you mean about the freebies; I only planned to be in there for about 20 minutes - was there for an hour! The phone cost me 5698. A hundred or so more than some other places, but I didn't want to go down the 水货 route this time.

Just received the AN401 car charger, can't believe how small it is.

I also used SEUS to update the Sony software to the latest version (clean install). Lets see if that fixes the reboots.

@AndyD777 the gui is not that spectacular since i had been running it for a few weeks on my x10i, i think i will configure ADW.Launcer EX and make some nice eyecandy.

The thing i do have noticed is the battery, this is on my my first charge thou, i have 82% after 16h10min with light use, that would have been imposible on my x10i.

and it feels so light, will take some time to adjust, the x10i i knew inside out how to hold it/use it in every situation, it's some what slippier.

Update2: i have an older Panasonic plasma, remote does WORK i just forgot to enable Viera Link in the meny.
i noticed that the image was not all over tv, so i had to use Overscan to make it fill the whole area. i know it stretches the image, but if someone else has the same problem that is the solution i found.

And the battery will improve even more after your third charge

Is it easy to go back to original launcher if you don't like for exampel ADW Launcher EX?? Never tried

Posted by SKIBBE
@Killmaster9 at first you will get to choices when you go back to the launcher ie original and your second, there you can make the new one always start. if you don't want it any more, you can reset the settings in programs clear cach and such. atleast that was what you did in the x10. just don't remember exactly but it's not much of a hussle

Thanks. I use Email app for Gmail now which BTW looks better.

As for brightness of course there is the setting for that in Menu but looks like it still performs this automatic thing anyway.
Yes there is brightness control on the widget also which gives screen off (not automatic), max (not automatic), and the set brightness which is ALWAYS adjusting the brightness automatically.
So I cannot set the desired brightness level AND have the automatic off.
What is fckn annoying to be honest. Why can't we just turn this OFF!!!

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo delayed to Q3, Arc and Play facing limited supply due to Japanese quake

There hasn't been much good news coming out of Japan lately and this sadly keeps up with the unhappy trend. Sony Ericsson has officially bumped the broad launch (it's already available in limited quantities) of its Xperia Neo handset to at least July, explaining the delay as the result of "supply chain disruptions." Additionally, the Xperia Arc and Play devices, two other members of the company's new Android Gingerbread family, will be available in smaller volume than expected, at least for the near term. We guess that might go some way to explaining why the Xperia Play failed to reach some UK carriers in time for its April 1st launch date. Skip past the break for a statement from Sony Ericsson, who promises to be more explicit about the situation when it delivers its latest quarterly results on April 19th.

As Sony Ericsson continues to assess the impact of the situation in Japan on its business, we have communicated to our operator customers and distributors that some volume of Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY and Xperia neo phones has been affected. Xperia neo has already been introduced to the marketplace in limited quantities. However, due to supply chain disruptions resulting from the situation in Japan, we have shifted the timing of Xperianeo's broader launch and it is now planned for early Q3.

We will address this topic at the time of our Q1 financial results announcement call that is scheduled for April 19, 2011.

I am very happy I got this phone.

I have some concerns like:
The memory usage of apps/processes drops sometimes quickly even with the same number of open apps/services.
Like from 155 MB to 110MB.
I hope it doesn't affect this device's performance.
Do you reboot often?

Loving it so far! Excellent camera, display, browser experience. Well built. My only concern coming from IOS is the Android OS. LEt´s see if I can grow accostumed to it. The device itself is gorgeous!

Its a shame the redesigned Arc wont be out over in the uk. It has some features which people were wanting that hasnt been on phones for a while (eg xenon flash, tv). Its supposedly slightly thicker as well. The Acro is a Japanese only market phone unfortunately. Out soon according to xperiablog.

That's just how android handles memory which is optimized for multitasking, very different from Symbian or WM, so nothing to be worried about. You can also get Widgetsoid and set your own display brightness value as a widget similar to the stock power control widget but much more customizable. Give it a go

I keep writing that arc's camera is very very average. Now go to gsmarena and see it yourself. Samsung doesn't use fancy naming and so on. It simply works. Arc's shots may look sharper due to oversharpening. And it's probably a production model against a proto, which makes that comparision even worse for SE. Just do yourselves a favour and compare it by yourselves. Arc's shots look like pinkish oil paintings with some sharpening and visible noise reduction tweaks on comparision to Sammy. I would buy Arc with Sammys oridinary sensor without any hesitation. Sony's tech doesn't do it any favour:(
...
ok, I ve done my homework. Anyone willing to see some direct 100% crop comparisions between sgs2,arc and 2x (made from gsmarena's shots) please pm your e-mail address.

Went to the shops today and felt blue against silver and I thought I was full in favour of buying silver but now I'm not sure. Blue feels better built but the two tone rear looks cheap. Silver's finish isn't as fantastic as I hoped. Now I'm looking at trying to find Orange's limited edition black and wondering how easy is it to unlock..

As I wrote in other thread too, crops are not everything. I mean I don't give a sh..t too much about it - I don't print 2 meter posters from my photos. And Arc photos look brilliant, what also GSM Arena review says.

Thanks! I don't worry anymore since observing device memory shows that the level of RAM doesn't drop to any dangerous level. Device is super fluent.

camera itself is quite fine. But sony;s driver...
severely overprocessed shots 1.X MB in size made to:
1. look good on Arc's LCD
2. look good on computer screen with no zoom
3. be as light in MB as possible.

We can take any sgs2 shot and make it look like arc's one but cannot do the opposite way, because all the detail is already lost!

I looked also at GSM Arena comparison tools and it shows exactly what I'm talking about.
Compared to Samsung Galaxy S II for instance shows some agressive sharpening but also
shows more detail and colour. Some parts are better, some are worse.
But photos as a whole look great.

It proves it's target. These are just good shooters not full profi cameras.
Profi cameras make RAW files, there's no point in comparing them.

1. Good idea!
2. great! that's exactly how i use pics from my phone.
3. Also good. Means I can email shots direct from my phone without wasting too much data.

Of course, if this was a DSLR an I was a professional photographer, I might not be so happy about it.

Yes, but I used to buy SE phones for a reasen. They used to be much better, and now are behind Sammy and Nokia in camera dept:( The qestion is why are you willing to pay for 8mp so called exmor r shots, when SE could do the same with 5mp sensor from a different manufacturer or different driver? Writing about Nokia I only mean n8, cause other 8mp phones from them...average 3mp AF would be better:)

remove the network ( if saved ) and remove it's saved passkey ( if it has one )... then connect again... this is a known problem that happens not only to phones.. I had the same issue with my laptop once and my phone also.. I think it might be related to the router...

Some times the router insist on giving a specific device a bad IP ( starts with 169 for example ) which means the device is not in the network... reconnecting does not resolve the problem but resetting the settings on the device ( by deleting the settings ) will in most cases I see resolve the problem...

Late reply. YES when I goto a restaurant and don't say the word "ONLY" when referring to whats on the menu the waitress/waiter does give me whats on the menu (specials first or meal of the day) / irregardless of the menu in front of someone. THAT my friend is just good service - asking for their opinion on choice = only. What cheap ass restaurants do you goto with such poor service?!

FACT is comparison of other devices is GOOD for everyone; going on about the same thing again & again is annoying. Oddly enough nobody stated that about complaining for the poster they where annoyed at talking about HTC. Problem is nobody quoted that happening just that they hated him talking about the HTC models.
