...and it doesn't even work through the wifi proxy we have at work, so a bit pointless at the mo for me

Posted by anonymuser
And apparently it's only football, which doesn't work for me at all...

Posted by Barachus
i'm loving it already, even got to see Liverpool V Birmingham on the train last night, sadly Liverpool managed to somehow not lose the match, i guess i cant blame O2 for that

Quite interested in the sky player but don't really want to subscribe at the moment I tried txting sky to 2020 but will not send. Any alternatives?

Seems Orange have sold around 30,000 iphones on its launch day. Is that a good figure for one day?

Posted by masseur
I'm guessing most must have been pre-orders that were posted out 'coz I didn't see any of the usual queues outside Orange shops I passed today, nor CPW

in fact it all seems rather sedate as I have't even heard anything about it on the radio news, nor the TV news

Posted by Bonovox
Well its probably also because most people are working aswell its not the weekend. Also it says their new ad campaign will now feature the iphone. I never seen no crowds of people when the 3GS was released either. It should pick up maybe with the run upto Christmas although people are still tightening their belts in these hard times not everyone can afford one.

Bond street Orange had sold approx 20 by 9am this morning. Not too bad going for a 2 hour early opening!

THAT right thar is THE BEST Single Day sales of ANY handset!

http://www.iphonealley.com/cu[....]s-to-iphone-sales-record-in-uk

You KNOW what this means for Apple, for Orange UK, aftermarket accessories, but most importantly end users!

I been told that the free 3 month sky promotion on the iPhone is an exclusive agreement with o2 an Sky. It won't work for other networks only the chargeable option will work. I got my free code tho cuz am on o2 so happy days btw quality is realy good.

Posted by anonymuser
Sure enough, there's now a much more malicious and dangerous version of that jailbroken iPhone SSH worm - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/11/iphone_hacking_tool/ - this one steals user data and gives no sign of its presence..

Posted by masseur
MyWi couldn't enable wifi tethering tonight and asked to reboot. On reboot all I got was the apple logo repeatedly whether I did a normal reset or a hard reset so.... 2 hours later, my iPhone is almost finished being restored.

can't complain though, I have had almost no issues with the iPhone itself and I guess this is the price of jailbreaking

Posted by masseur
aarrgghh!
I don't recommend using Blackra1n RC3 as it causes more troubles than it solves.
network settings need to be reset after every power on to get wifi working, if you can get it working at all, and apparantly youtube and gps have issues, though there's a cydia fix for that.

fortunately I have Blackra1n RC2 that I used before in a backup so I've just restored that and am now, once again, restoring my iphone

actually, I'm not that bothered by the jailbreak. Its the unlock I want so if this still causes problems I guess I'll just wait for my unlock code from O2 in the next week or two

Posted by frank2345babies
Yeah I was trying the sky subscription with my orange sim so probably explains why it didn't send will
pop in my o2 sim and try again. I used rc3 blackrain and although initially I had no wifi and had to resest network settings several times and after getting wifi to work I have had no other issues irregardless of if I power down the device or not. It's strange how blackra1n seems to affect different devices so differently

Posted by masseur
I tried resetting network settings many times with RC3 but it just wouldn't find any wifi networks so i decided on resetting the iphone and choosing the new setup option to start from scratch rather than doing a restore from my previous setup.

once it was initially reset I did the blackra1n RC2 and then blacksn0w and then ticked all the boxes in iTunes to install all my music, videos, podcasts, apps, pics etc again and I've restarted the phone and swapped sims a dozen times now to check it and its been perfect each time.

Actually, doing it as a fresh install this time seems to have given me nearly 1gb more free than I had before, even though I have checked and everything is installed as it was

now I'm playing with an app called iPhoneBackupExtractor to pull the camera roll and text messages from the previous backup, but this one costs $15 for full functionality so I'm hunting around for a freeware app before I pay the money

there is a way to permanently fix the WI-FI(at least it should, it worked for me): http://www.simonblog.com/2009[....]ems-after-blackra1n-jailbreak/ read the whole thing, it worked for me, as I said...Idk if it's the PushFix app, or maybe because I reinstalled the FW a few thousand times, but I think it's PushFix, cuz before I installed it, I had problems with my wi-fi, and no probs after:P

Posted by masseur
yeah, at the time I was having problems I googled and found that exact same thing written in man places, and tried it all but it made no difference to my wifi problems.

Anyway, its all working great now after the full reset and as I said elsewhere, using a tmob sim now is like having a new phone. 3G data just works each and every time unlike the frequent O2 stagnation. Its also available throughout my whole commute rather than the many black spots on O2 where I can't get data even though the signal bar shows full rception and the 3G icon is displayed too!

Still waiting for my vodafone sim to give them a test as its been around 4 years since I left Vodafone

Mr. Miyagi, welcome to pure bliss.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
thanks for that. when the iphone is switched off and its charging. should i get an indicator on the main screen showing its charging, like a big green bar, or should the phone screen remain off while its being charged? is that normal. because mines if off while its charing, i don't see any sign of it being charged while the phone is off and its plugged into the wall charger.

Posted by masseur
there's no charging indication when its off

when its on, but the screen is off, there's also no indication but if you touch the home button you get a huge battery displayed in the middle of the screen and you can see how full it is. Also the battery icon in the top right shows its charging too

Posted by Mr Miyagi
thanks for that masseur. how long was your initial charge? do you let it charge fully and then let the battery drain?

Posted by masseur
just let it charge until its full and don't worry about it after that

Posted by Mr Miyagi
will it say battery is fully charged? or do i just guess it once the big battery bar is fully green?

Indeed it will. Give it a few hours to fully charge. Then drain it fully for at least two times then charge again - I noticed the complaints previous users where having about poor battery life, and when I did this - with my same usage patterns - my battery life improved significantly; however like Masseur stated fully charge it and don't worry about it. I didn't give it hours to fully charge initially when I bought mine.

If you FULLY power it off (pressing & holding the power for a few seconds and swiping to the right at the top of the screen) and connect it, it'll charge by first powering on the device. The screen being off (is a setting)

If your iPhone is jailbroken, download MyTones from Cydia, it is very useful and very easy to use, free as well:) It lets you use the songs from your iPod library to make your own ringtones, right on your phone:)

Hey Guys

Quick question, may sound silly but i'm a newbie with iphones

got a 3gs 32gb and its on O2, whats best way to unlock it?

i have no idea if its payg or contract!

thanks

Posted by masseur
its dead easy using the BlackRa1n app

here's a tutorial

Posted by PeterKay
excellento, will try it

does this impact any warranty etc!!

Posted by masseur
very probably, but all you have to do if you need to get warranty is a reload of the original firmware

turn the iphone off, hold the home button while connecting the USB cable and keep the home button pressed until you see the usb cable picture on your iphone

then it will restore you iphone with the latest standard firmware and the phone will no longer be jailbroken or locked

Hi PeterKay!

not done it yet, but will do in a day or 2

the tutorial seems easy, definitely worth a try....

Posted by masseur
honestly, its a 2 minute job to jailbreak and unlock

just be aware that many, including me, lose wifi connectivity but all you need to do it go to settings > general > reset > reset network settings and reboot the phone and all should be well

Posted by PeterKay
does this method go with all iphones!

Not all, but most, but don't worry, resetting network fixes it, mostly:P don't worry, if something happens, you can always go back to the original firmware and have it all back, so it's nothing to worry about

I know I can go and research it....

but you Esato genuises had been there and done it, and maybe are making a YouTube video as I type..

After Jailbreaking, does access to iTunes stay the same? I mean nothing extra to think about..

and.. how are non-iTunes apps installed. I see lots about Cydia Apps, top 10 Cydia Apps etc.

I will also read back to see which non-iTunes Apps are the most popular and why!!

I will read and research more.

PeterKay! Who will take the plunge first? You or I?

Everything stays the same after a jailbreak, all you get is Cydia, so, you don't lose much... Cydia is a third-party app which allows you to download other third-party apps:P its very simple

P.S. Here is some help for your decision: I am 16 years old, and I have jailbroken and unlocked many other iPhone with 99% success, imagine if I broke something, I don't have any money to pay, and my parents would kill me, but I am very confident in this because I know there is always a way to go back and I don't worry if something doesn't work from the first try, I go back to the original and try again, but this time, I pay special attention to every step so I know if I made a mistake somewhere. As I remember, all that could go wrong is just gonna waste your time, but it's fixable:) Hope this helps:)

The update is more than 300MB so 30 mins may not be the upper limit.

Re updating - for me the longest part is generally all the backing up and restoring, but I guess that varies depending on how recently/regularly you connect the phone and Mac/PC.

Haven't done an update on our new, much faster Mac yet, but hopefully it will all be a lot quicker than I'm used to (best part of an hour on our old PC, all told).

Beginning to be tempted by the idea of ebaying my 3G (once O2 have unlocked it) to fund the upgrade to a 3GS, but will I regret it next summer when whatever comes next is released? Probably...

Posted by masseur
next July is still 8 months away!
I'd worry about that then and get what you clearly really want now

I played with my brothers 3G on Sunday as he needed the firmware updated and hasn't currently got a pc that works. Though I had one before the 3GS, I had forgotten how noticeable the difference in speed was in some actions like browsing etc
