I know exactly what you mean. The iPhone really is a work of art in my opinion. However! I dislike much of Apples software, iTunes is painfully slow to start up and syncing is made very easy at all, Quicktime is god awful and many features are saved for "Pro" users. Apple should be using this software to advertise themselves. Even know I know that they would both run 10 times better on a mac I like the fact that I can upgrade my PC is any way I want hassle-free (I built it in the first place) and that it'll run 99.9999% of software out there unlike Mac OS. Apple users would no doubt say at this point "But Mac OS can emmulate windows" and my response would be "you shouldn't have to".

The way I see it is Mac OS is good for new users i.e. parents and older people; while WIndows is for more experienced people however the opposite tends to happen.

Updated last night not really much difference to me on the 3.1 side of things but iTunes is definitely an improvement.

The App Management is a revelation such a small thing which will add a big difference....

Posted by tomjsmith000
Just to clarify, iPhone 3.1 synced to the new iTunes can still be unlocked right?

I'm getting one soon believe it or not!

Posted by anonymuser
AFAIK 3.1 can't be jailbroken as yet (or at least the devteam have advised people not to update yet) which presumably means it can't be unlocked... but I'm sure it's just a matter of days before that will change. Having said that, I took the easy route of just getting the phone on O2, so I've not had to bother with any of that.

The way I see it is Mac OS is good for new users i.e. parents and older people; while WIndows is for more experienced people however the opposite tends to happen.

I think in some ways it's similar to what you see with the iPhone vs. WinMo argument - yes, many of those Windows Mobile phones can do more and have "better" specs on paper, but in practice the Apple device is so much nicer to use it's actually a lot more functional. I've been using Windows since the days of 3.1 but I've come to realise the same thing is true - yes it's the most open OS, the most commonly supported, the most widely used, but it's also a complete PITA and always has been. I believe in better!

Posted by tomjsmith000
I agree with the iPhone WinMo arguement. Before iPhone there just weren't touchscreen phones that didn't use a stylus.

The secret to any phone or OS in my opinion is all about the interface. It's the comprimise between complexity and functionality that phones tend to get wrong and to use an "iPhone clone" by any of the big manufacturers like Samsung and LG, etc is just a painful experience after the iPhone. And a big part of the interface is eye candy and smooth little animations, etc which Apple have done perfectly.

Moving onto PCs I see them as a completely different ballgame because PCs are used when you're sitting down with a very accurate mouse, you want sheer functionality in my opinion. Phones are used out and about and on the move so needs to be simple and easy to use (where WinMo just emulated very precise mouse clicks).

I wish I was savvy enough to create my own interfaces for devices. Maybe one day I'll learn.

I pretty much agree with that, but at the same time, interface is still important - nobody wants to have to make any more effort than they need to in order to achieve a given task, otherwise we'd all still be using DOS (and hey, I quite liked DOS, I used to write .bat files for everything). So there's a sweet spot to be found somewhere between functionality and ease of use, and I guess it's just down to the eye of the beholder who gets that one right.

But for me, the real problem with Windows isn't so much the interface, but all the problems under the surface that inevitably slow things down and clog the system up - to the point where just booting up has become almost unbearable on our home PC. I like the idea of a computer that doesn't have to waste all its resources in the background running antivirus, and doesn't have a registry to get choked up over time.

Posted by tomjsmith000
Yeah that's true. Over the years I've learned that the only way to keep windows running well is to reinstall it every few months. You learn to back up important stuff and keep things very light. I have found an anti-virus that is very light and I keep start-up time to a minimum. I've only recently learned to do this stuff and I'm quite an avid PC user. Spose you shouldn't have to do this but I'm used to it and live with it. I've actually downgraded from Vista to XP because XP in my opinion has only just become stable and good.

Anyway! Back to iPhones! I would vry much like the 3GS but am not going to pay that much for it. Anyone who has spent lots of money to upgrade from a 3G to a 3GS needs therapy.

Shame, I was hoping they would announce the iPhone 3gs 8gb version with a more reasonable price yesterday. £440 is just too much if you don't need 16gb or even if you do IMO.

Why was this not in 3.0? Surely copy and paste is just that, it doesn't specify were you can and can't paste to!?

Posted by masseur
cant say I recall that as a limitation previously as generally you can dial from where you see a number...

I do like the itunes updates...
here's the app management screen

...and here's the movie tab. I have 100+ music videos which get listed here and previously you had to go through an laboriously tick each one... now they have an "automatically include all" option(yeah!)

in the iphone 3.1 update... here's the app genius screen.. not too sure its suggestion my best possibilities yet

and now you can also see the top grossing apps too!

Posted by masseur
hmmm... since the update I can't get weather, stocks or youtube via my home wifi although they all work fine via 3g

itunes, app store, safari and other internet apps all work fine via the wifi

anyone have similar?

btw, for any iphone developers out there... the 3.1 sdk is also now available, though I haven't read up yet on any API changes

Posted by tomjsmith000
Can you remove stocks, weather, youtube etc, with the new iTunes rearranging system?
Surely I'm not the only one whoh as never actually used the Stocks app?!

Posted by masseur
as far as I can see... no. you have the same limitations with the app management that you have on the iphone itself

best you can do is move the unwanted apps off to a distant (last) desktop that you never visit

I actually like the stocks and weather app.. but despite having two seperate access points at home, neither work via either access point now and I don't know why

Posted by anonymuser
Stocks, YouTube and weather working fine on wifi here - that's on a 3G though. Tried a reboot?

Posted by AbuBasim
YouTube and Weather works fine over WiFi for me on a 3GS.

I think I prefer the Android system where you can out widgets and search boxes as well as icons on the desktop however you do find when you open the all programs menu you're lost in a huge mass of icons. My friends Hero is still quite jumpy as well, nowhere near as smooth as iPhone.

Flight Control has had an update which now includes an Aussie scene with the Royal Flying Doctors

the author seems to have a bit of a sense of humour as now the messages you get when you land are things like:-
you bewdy
no worries
crikey
fair dinkum
etc

and also when the game ends you get the following screen

Sorry but that is OLD world thinking. You have NO IDEA how many applications are available on Mac OS X - and its growing exponentially!

oh and with emmulation - non of the sort. Its running WINDOWS pure & simple! Its called Boot camp. And with a virtual communication to the hardware via Parellels or VMWare I'm sorry but if Servers by BIG corporations using VMWare then there is nothing wrong with running WinXP/Win7 on a Mac.

There is a reason why the hardware on a Mac still runs better than your build it yourself kit Windows. its because the firmware, software, OS is purposely made for the Mac - which means less headaches on that platform than on Windows. Don't forget if you build a PC yourself you BETTER be good (more than your average gamer) for supporting your own machine as you'll always get "contact the manufacturer of said hardware" for support. That is unnacceptable by any means. I've used Windows since 3.1 to WinXP Sp3 and tested Win7 beta and i'm still unimpressed with what works with varying hardware as opposed to what doesnt (more on the latter). Win7 is MUCH better but there is a reason why many large banks/corporations did NOT upgrade to Vista and considering Win7.

back on topic!

I'm highly considering the following case by: switcheasy

Just 2 more weeks to enjoy this incredible hardware/software platform.

However I'm leaning towards the "more-thing.com" cases:

beautiful cases...but metal wild scratch in seconds and it would be slippery right?

sorry to bother...how do I move teh widgets???
I never use stocks either and would like to organize my icons

Posted by masseur
press and hold any icon and they all start to shake.
then just drag them around as you wish
press the home key to finish (thats the button at the bottom on the front)

with the latest iTunes, you can also arrange them from there (click on your device and then go to the apps tab)

Posted by ros-mari
I can‘'t move them from one page to another, can I??
thanks, my guardian angel!

Posted by masseur
yes, just drag them to the edge of the page and the next page appears

WMV are Windows Media files. Don't think you can play those on the iPhone. But there are converters on the web. One example at www.videora.com (which I haven't tried myself so I don't know how good or bad it is).

New iPhone 3G[S] user here!!!

I don't go full-time until Thursday, so it stays home in the box for now.

MAN this thing is beautiful.

1st question ... how the FRACK do I remove the SIM card? the tool only moves it 2mm away from flush, can't pull it out.

Posted by masseur
congrats!

push a bit harder with the tool, the drawer should pop out far enough to grab, even if you have big fingers!

Posted by AbuBasim
Locked to an operator or unlocked? If unlocked then try to stay at 3.0 or 3.0.1 if you're planning to use tethering!
Apple disabled tethering in unlocked phones so my phone may go back into it's box waiting for Apple to fix this or until a jailbreak is available for 3.1 3GS. Time to dust of my old P990i?

Posted by Supa_Fly
Thanks guys.

Will try SIM switch tomorrow morning or night - still gotta get a case first - I'm not risking breaking this sweetness.

* Already downloading basic apps.
- checking out iTunes University some VERY interesting learning there (Japanese Kanji, Cantonese, lots more)
- eBuddy old time favorite IM from SE W810 & K850i days.
- Skype: I have no idea WHY cause I don't use it EVER.
- WordPress: some upcoming thoughts in 2wks for my blog IF I spare time from enjoying 3G[S] lol.
- Watt pad: time to start reading some free books.
- looking for a GREAT money management application (gotta start fixing credit rating - this or apps is the LAST selfish purchases for a LONG time; save iPhone/iPod stereo for wife & I).
- etc etc.

Gotta clean up my music library too MANY duplicates and poor quality music I've never noticed before.

My PC is SERIOUSLY slow with CeleronD on Dell GX520 with 2GB of RAM
I now have a REASON to fillup 500GB HDD.

Oh and checkout VW Scirocco R challenge game looks cool & FREE.
Yahoo Finance; really want Google Finance app exactly like this.

BTW, my iPhone bought at Yorkdale mall here in Tdot came with OS 3.1 pre-installed
no tethering for now, no laptop no need to.

OH gotta get Qik and Facebook

Some advice please.

I have a 3GS and have had it since release i was happily running firmware 3.0 jailbroken using purplera1n until last night. I noticed that my battery had suddenly taken a leap from 55% to 85% but i thought nothing of this. i plugged in the phone and went to sleep. ZZzzzz.

When waking up this morning the iphone was showing the empty battery signal but showing as having the charger plugged in. the phone would just not take a charge however or turn on no matter what i did, i thought that i had stored my files in Cydia to restore with a 3.0 firmware however this was not the case and in order to get my phone working i had to put it in recovery mode and restore to the official 3.1 firmware through itunes. i use my phone on orange in the uk so need to unlock. now i know there is currently no jailbreak solution and potentially no future unlock solution at all but i would just like to ask advice on if i should take any further action to reduce the liklihood of the unlock being unavailable in the future. I Have the ibec, ibss and ecid from when i initially jailbroke but are there anyfiles i should back up etc under my current circumstances?

any advice is appreciated

Anyone still on 3.0 or 3.0.1? Don't update to 3.1! Wait for Apple to release the next update. The minor improvements 3.1 brings are not worth the problems the same firmware includes.

My iPhone was rock stable with the 3.0 and 3.0.1 firmwares. Good battery life. I didn't need to charge the phone more than at most every second day. Never any hangs. The phone would be on 24/7 for several weeks. And I enjoyed high speed internet tethering on my work laptop.

The 3.1 firmware is a huge disappointment. I have by now experienced three of the major problems other users have reported: rapid battery drain, coma (phone on but doesn't wake up from sleep; only hard reset helps), internet tethering disabled (why on an officially unlocked phone!?).

I love this phone but with the problems, especially missing tethering which I need for my work, I will have to wait for Apple to sort out this firmware. The phone goes back into it's box today.

strange. I haven't experienced any of those issues (yet)

Cannot comment on Battery life of 3GS/3.1 yet as today will be the maiden voyage with it. However, I know it doesn't compare to any other phone I've had.

That said, I suggest you log your complaint over on Apple's support forums, since they've ALREADY contacted users complaining of battery life and created & distributed an application to see what battery usuage is on your phone so it reports back to Apple (surely looking for any trends, not just causes).

GODDAMN!!!

This 3GS is bloody FAST!
Simple switching of applications, that remember your last place or action; no big deal about multitasking since Email, IM, MMS and SMS, and phone calls work and get updated while your doing something else; Facebook too.

NOW I understand.
Is the simplistic things that make people love the iPhone:
- quickly browse between stock settings.
- quickly jump though contacts (E71 was almost as quick through Contacts, faster at dialing a contact entry though).
- rapidly able to load pages, scroll though them on side menus like forums sites (Esato, Macrumors, etc)

I haven't read the manual yet though...
so still haven't found out how to edit videos recorded, or how to zoom into focus. I can tap focus, but not ZOOOOM.

Thus far I'm liking the experience. Now its fixing my music library which is a horrible mess and create ringtone's ALL over again. arrgh.

Eh eh...happens to everyone...turning from iphone haters into iphone lovers after spending some quality time with one

Anyway, you only can see it΄s true potential by jailbreaking...that΄s why i ΄m still on 3.0 and will remain like this untill 3.1 is problem free and there is jb available

Hi everyone!

I am thinking of getting a 32GS iPhone.

I will research the O2 site later today but would like Esato members opinions.

What's the best thing to do? Contract and then the phone is cheap? But I guess contracts are for 2 years.. I don't want that as I would want to upgrade when the next generation is released.

or Pay and Go and use my own o2 pay and go sim but then pay a high price for the phone?

@ares - Not sure why "you only can see it΄s true potential by jailbreaking"

could you explain more please?

32GS? assume you mean 32gb 3GS?

contract is cheaper but I'm not sure 24 months is worth just £100 less. I think 18 months is the way to go if you don't want payg... remember that with payg you get unlimited 3g and wifi data, but I don't think you get calls or texts without a min £10 topup/month

I bought my payg 32gb 3GS when it came out when I still had 7 months to go from my 16gb 3G contract.
I put the sim from the contract in the 3GS and am using that and put the payg sim into another phone which I only use for data anyway, so come Jan 2010 I'll be out of contract again with O2 but will still have some months left (prob until the next iphone release) with the payg

not sure if it helps but thats my way of working with 18 month contract

with regards to jailbreaking, there is more than you can download and do with a jailbroken phone because of the app store limitations, but even those seem to be getting less and less over time (maybe as Apple see more revenue possibilities )

i have the same problem i got rid of my 3g 16gb and got a Blackberry Bold, i dont want to get a 3gs in january if they are going to release another one in june. I know it `s probably far too early but has anyone heard any rumors ???

yes, just me not getting my brain in gear!

Thanks, I looked at their website and saw - Top up £10-£14 and get 500 minutes but not sure how many texts..

I see the cheapest contract is £29.38 with 75 minutes, 125 texts and unlimited data, and the phone would be £274.23
but for an extra fiver, 600 uk minutes and 500 texts..

I bought my payg 32gb 3GS when it came out when I still had 7 months to go from my 16gb 3G contract.

Sounds good! I have a Voda contract till next June. No cheap roaming in Japan now, so I don't need to keep that contract. Just port my number to a pay and go sim and keep it activated.

not sure if it helps but thats my way of working with 18 month contract

Yes, it helps, masseur, thanks !

OK, But I guess jail breaking is only useful if I see an app that it not available through the iStore !

Thinking time !!

Thanks again!

Jailbreaking is ONLY useful for 3.0 Firmware. You NEED to be careful not to attempt if your iPhone 3GS ships with 3.1 firmware; like mine did straight from Apple store here in Canada.

Man I'm LOVING this!

Cannot wait to get an intel mac and learn to code Objective-C apps for it! Got a LOT of ideas.

Oh yes and the App Store ... quality apps, developers get paid, more apps. Nuff Said.
Now as for accessories its incredible a TRUE ecosystem.

Next purchases:
Stereo Headset+mic+remote (better than stock.
"Klipsch Image S4i Earphones with Microphone"

Also getting Remote app which is FREE and the AirTunes WiFi adapter so that I can control iTunes library for playback on speakers connected to it from my iPhone ANYWHERE in the house! This is the future boys & girls.

I'm a contract IT Support person, wish I was a developer. its ok I worked long enough for Employment Insurance to kick in and help pay bills; but its slim living and I hate it. I'll work construction in the cold before I consider that. Tough times indeed. Couldn't renew as Bank re-organization and budget is tight. Current employees are already worried about their jobs as it is. The entire team and manager want me to stay but cannot extend contract and hiring freeze is current until fiscal 2010 - so in January I'll apply directly and I already have 3 solid references. going to look at the banks' competition (3 others) for now. I really like this bank though. we'll see how it goes.

I've wanted to own a Mac since the eMac debuted; and since Intel the prices for White MacBook 13" are getting cheaper, but I want a unibody (still too much out of my account).

I enjoyed the joke actually. spot on. not all those that created apps came from a programming background and those that didn't have made fortunes to live off of.

So when you finish it post here and Bon Chance.

oh yeah back on topic.

A few new questions:

What stereo headphones/headset (with mic) combo are you guys using?
What is your iPhone/iPod stereo of choice?
How do I view PDF files on my iPhone? I thought PDF ability was built into OS X the base of the iPhone/iPod_Touch??
