@ Fat, hopefully you will get yourself out of it one way or another just try to say no to things you buy for the fun of it, alot of people buy stuff they don't need

Me too!!

Just under £30k last time I checked! hehehehe

I was paying out £2.5k a month this year but I will have reduced that to £1.5k/month for January of next year, then I can start to look at repaying the £30k at a greater rate of knots!

I still buy my guilty pleasures or I wouldn't get out of bed each morning!!

It pains me to works so hard and hand over my cash in interest to the greedy beggars!

im shamefully in deep too, but im a good swimmer

was tempted to sell EVERYTHING i owned liek that guy did on ebay, but i dont thnk a tenner would really help me right now

lol

what was that about on eBay mate?

Posted by Cycovision
I got my fingers burnt during a long(ish) period of unemployment a few years ago. I only ended up about £3000 in debt on credit cards but it took me ages to pay it back because of the interest and I dread to think how much money they finally got off me, must have been at least double that!

Never again

Posted by Sammy_boy
Wow nanu, that's quite a debt!

I think I have spending problems, which I'm now trying to curb, I've got over £2,000 on my credit card and a year into paying off a £5,500 bank loan, always seem to be in my overdraft too

Though I'm trying to curb that impulse now (Ebay is my biggest weakness) before the debt becomes unmanageable. I seem to be one of those people at the mo who can't just own one or maybe two of something, I have to have five or 6! For example, I've recently gone a bit mad on DAB radios, and have about 6 or 7 of them when I really don't need that many, some might be going on Ebay soon!

Or, if anyone is interested in a DAB radio, PM me and we'll sort something out!

I'm not too bad with my money. I don't have much left over each month after paying my mortgage etc but I don't have a credit card, and luckily i don't use my overdraft.

I thank my parents for it really, they tought me how to utilise my money, and thankfully i've always repayed any money i've borrowed off them.

Sorry to hear some people have debts and I hope everything gets sorted asap.

I'm very close to Nanu debtwise. Lost 3 of my jobs a few years back which left me with just about enough to scrape together to pay off the interest. I was made redundant last summer (2006) which left me without a job for a few months and things were getting way over my head.

I was put in touch with a company called Thomas Charles and spoke to a consultant called Phillip Hunt and he sorted out everything all the way up to starting the IVA.
Have been doing it for a year now and have another 4 years left (£255 a month)

These days I have a full time job and a baby on the way. I never use any of my money until my bills are paid first. Whatevers left I put half away and use the other half to last me the rest of the month and have not bought a thing unless I have the money free in my bank account to do so.

my credit limit is £4,500 i's like they want you to get into debts.

I dont like the fact ive got £500 to pay off as I want it of my chest btw,
doesn't seem much I know but it's been like that since 2006 more or less

I am a Spendo-holic, i will spend 50-60% my salary on the First week itself - then starts the Hard time (using a lot of Credit cards, ABN AMRO bites my A$$ every month).

On the last week , i will think , "from Next month i will change and spend my money wisely", but that never happens

BTW This is my First job ever in life, and its the second year in office, is that the problem. i need some advise from you Miss UK

BTW, now its the first week of Feb, and its the first weekend lol

Well what I can suggest is open a ISA and have some cash go into it over the weeks so then your saving for a rainy day

try and only buy stuff you really need not stuff for the fun of it!

try and have a minimal amount of Direct debits going out cos when you have a phone contract that seems to eat a lot of cash per month!

Try and repay more on the min payment for your cards,
cos it takes agaes to pay them off

read this and do wisely you will be fine

do you live with parents?
as this is often the cause of overspending for most people they have it easy at home bills are low and everything works out cheap

Posted by pmerryman
You training to be a debt manager there Miss Uk, some great advise going out there.

Posted by Miss UK
Unfortuantley this was what happened to myself until I got a big reality shock last year lol

ive just learn't thru a life of riley to sheer hell atm,
maybe I should seek a Job in solving other peoples debts for them,
I don't like seeing people do what I used to do back then

Posted by pmerryman
I'm sure most of us have been there at one time in life, I know I have for sure.

Dont even hold a credit card now, and haven't done for 5 years.

Posted by Miss UK
If u have a credit card just think of it as not ur money then that way ur unlikely to use it alot! Ive used upto £1000 on mine Lloyds Tsb one had it cancelled after i'd finished paying it of, took out a lower rate card with Mbna and only used £480 on it which im quite tempted to get it quick of my chest lol.. Btw dont think u live easy as something always catches up with u inda end!

Posted by Twometre
Some of the things are not worthy to be bought on cash and for that reason I am always on debts. Im used to overspending, but at least I spend than waste.

Posted by baconnugget
im a student have no job but have a £7000 limit on my credit card lol not sure why they give me that but i have been careful and only spend what i can afford.

Posted by Miss UK
They give you that to get money outta you or atleast
hope you get into debt !

if your careful only use it for something you must have,
but remember it's not your money it's the banks or credit card company your with

Lloyds TSB keep offering me Loans even though im not in fulltime work present bad eh

Posted by haynesycop
Lloyds are terrible for that. I got my credit card when i was 18 and it had a £2,500 limit on it then, in 5 years it has gone up to £4,750. Got £1,700 on it at the moment but my bursary will pay over half of it off next week which will make things more manageable.

Banks really need to take a good luck at how they go about analyzing peoples circumstances. It wasn't long ago i was offered a £10,000 loan and i work 12 hours a week, ridiculous.

Posted by Trev1982
i learnt my lesson when i was 16 was paying debts till i was 21 ooops, cash only for me now lol

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I don't have a credit card or anything like that, and I never do Hire Purchase or anything. I only pay for things when I can afford them (and that means having all the money at the time of purchase). I do, however, owe the government around $13000 on my student loan, but that is interest free. Also, I owe my parents about $1800 for my MacBook laptop, also interest free. I'll pay that back asap.

Posted by voda_jon
I got myself into pretty bad debt when i was 18 ended up with 3 credit cards and store cards and a bank loan had just over £15K in debt but luckily for me ma dad (who i never met or knew of) died and left me a lot of money so i paid off the debts and dont really have to worry bout money at the mo...

plus ma photography business is tickin over nicely lol...

My biggest piece of advice would be to stay away from credit cards, store cards, bank loans, hire purchases and anything with a stupid interest rate unless your going completely under in which case sometimes they can help but not very much and not for that long really!!!!

Plus i found talking to the bank (hsbc in my case) helped as they would rather help you out by giving you a managed loan than lose the money all together if you go bankrupt or IVA agreement route.

I cancelled a Classic Credit card with Lloyds 3 years ago and last week I got a statement for it

I went into the bank and spoke to someone who put me on the phone to the department, I couldn't believe the stuff the woman was saying to me trying to get me to not cancel it when it had been years earlier lol

I had £3,000 on that but paid it off from £1,000 then took the Mbna card out, no probs with them present ive got one card I think now hoping the TSB ones gone for good now

I would never trust a loan from a bank btw,
its best if you have savings or you can get a Credit card with No Intrest for 12mths etc

Posted by Sammy_boy
I've now got nearly £3,000 on my credit card, I keep buying crap I don't really need, I'm sure I've got a problem! Also still got a £5,500 loan which is taking forever to pay off

One piece of advice I will give though is don't take out any of those loans based on the equity of your house. You know the ones, like the adverts in the UK for Picture Loans - get a loan secured on your house, use it to pay off all your other debts etc., and consolidate into one 'manageable' loan My wife took one of those out, it needed my signature too, and although I was wary I was stupid enough to sign it.

Fast forward a couple of months, and we go to see the bank to get an extension to our mortgage to pay off all our various cards, loans etc. including that Picture loan. Computer said no, due to that bloody Picture loan we couldn't do anything like that, basically we're pwned by that company! The bank couldn't do anything for us, the only choice is to get that loan paid off, along with the rest of our debt.

Upshot is, that I personally now have practically no disposable income, most of it's taken up with paying off loans and credit cards, and I'm not helping myself with impulse purchases and shoving them on my credit card. My wife's a bit better off, even though her debt is bigger than mine, we're paying all the bills we should but we seem to be only 'existing' rather than 'living', let this be a saluatory lesson for you all!

Posted by Miss UK
Sammy, keep out of the shops and try and think to yourself you don't need these things it's hard, every penny I get goes towards my bills,
i'd rather have those paid off so im better off.

when Im working (need the decent paid job)
then im sure i'll be ok, but im on my own and I cannot manage off low wage even though I can get some help i'd rather not take any help off DSS if I can atm it just pays my bills it doesn't pay for nothing else..

I feel like some poor person I need to get off it and find me the stable job so I can be better off and be happy!

im not happy present my lifes a shambles lol

I need a little ray of sunshine in my life

How much is the repayment charge you make per month?
have you spoken to a Debt advisor cos they can help you get them payments down quicker

Posted by Sammy_boy
Not sure I've gotten to the stage where I'm struggling to pay off debts, just that there's not much left for me after paying them, the mortgage, bills etc.

Shops aren't the problem, it's Ebay and forums - I've recently developed an interest in watches (especially older mechanical wind-up ones) and been buying a few off watch forums!

Though I am wondering about seeing someone about it before it becomes unmanageable... and also STOP SPENDING!

Personally I think you making a mistake there but not taking any help from the DSS if you are owed.

There is an old saying in business which goes "dont use your money, use someone elses" I suggest you start taking any benefits you are owed (you not doing anything wrong) and saving what you can an investing it at a later stage.

You've paid your taxes so make the most of it.
