Guide for album art on W850i

Right i know a couple of people have had trouble getting album art on there nice new W850i's so i thought i would make a little guide to show how i did it so you can take advantage of one of this phones new features.

You will need:

1. W850i Phone (with memorycard)
2. Memory card reader or supplied DC-60
3. A PC with itunes 7

First of all i added album art to the songs i wanted it to be shown, this is very simple, just a case of finding the artwork (i used play.com) and dragging and dropping it into the corner where it is shown in itunes.

Then next i created a new playlist, just for convinience so i could drag all my songs at once to the memorycard

As shown i then higlighted all the songs in my new playlist, (ctrl+a) and then dragged them over to the phones memorycard. (either via DCU-60 or memorycard reader) i used the memorycard reader...

Then boot up the music player and voila album art should be there

Hopefully this helps anyone who has having trouble, if it dont then i am sorry i really dont know, this is just how i did it

Thanks for the guide. I will have to try it right after my debranding goes through

Posted by scottt
Yeah just to mention actually i am running Generic f/w if that makes any differance at all Though it should'nt as album art was working with the O2 f/w before i flashed it

i gotta try for p990i

Cherrs for the guide dude!

damn sweet guide there awsome, but is ther anything for us who dont use itunes, never liked for my ipod so i bought anapod instead.

Posted by Indiandawg
na dosnt works man.. i attach the image with artwork and then sace the file then copy the file to the music folder and then i also rebooted my p990i but dosnt the art image..

Posted by KopStar
Same here... some, not all of the album art went across
We may need a new plan...

Posted by scottt
So some of the album art did go across?

It really is silly i reckon that SE did'nt make it easier to get album art on to it. Reading the pamplet that came with the phone (titled Energize your phone with music) on the last page it says

"Add album art to your tracks to further enhance your music collection. You can use third party PC software and plug in to add album art"

Thats it, would of been nice to know what 3rd part app to use or plug-in

nope i give up this shit can go to hell until they come up with a better idea

When I view my music in the folder view on my phone all the album jpegs are there but none show up in the walkman player.

however I have a couple of podcasts on my phone which shows up there logo as album art but there is no picture in the folder viewer.

this is doing my head in as surely it can't be that hard. Why should we have to use itunes just to get album art on there. Has anyone tried Windows Media Player to put the music on yet?

Why haven't SE integrated this feature into Disc2Phone as part of the CDDB search??

Scott

Hi,

Have used iTunes and disc2phone to get album art on the W850i and it has worked ok. Use iTunes to add the artwork, note size needs to be somthing like 300x300 pixels to display on phone. looks like min dimensions as artwork larger than say 500x500 didnt show up on phone. also just used disc2phone, pointed it at the itunes folder, picked what I wanted (or use the shuffle fill feature) and go. works alright.

cheers

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post here because I too had the album artwork problem and think that I've got a definitive answer but you never know!

I couldn't figure out why some tunes that I transferred to my phone picked up artwork and others didn't.

Scott's guide is indeed excellent but even following that I had the same problem.

After much messing around with tags and encoding I used an app called Godfather to look at the encoding and I think this gave me the answer, although I think it's got very little to do with the encoding actually!

Anyway...when I ripped my CD's into Itunes I always searched for the artwork and it duly found it. I had a few random mp3's that I'd got from other sources and it was those that already had artwork that were showing up.

I thought it was a problem with Itunes - and in a way it is. The images that Itunes pulls in it's search are simply 'too big' in terms of file size. There must be a limit on the w850 as too how big the image associated in the ID tags can be. It seems to be about 100kb (I haven't proved this) but I simply reduced the size of the image using MSPaint and re-added it as per Scott's guide. Voila, it worked.

The easiest way to reduce the image is just open it in Paint and then simply save it again as a .jpeg. This in itself reduces it to a size the phone will accept.

Hope this helps. If not, my bad.

I have the W810i and as much as I think the W850i looks good, I don't think it's worth the upgrade. Looks too cumbersome to do. I just want to transfer the music and that's it.

I am not bothered about having album art on there.

I have found a better way to add album are if you DO NOT have iTunes, using windows media player.

1. open windows media player, and select the songs you want to add album art to.

2. Right Click the song(s) and click on "Advanced Tag Editor"

3. click on the fourth tab - "pictures"

4. go to google and find your artwork, and save it on your pc.

5. click "add" on the pictures tab, and find your artwork.

6. Once your artwork is added, make sure "user defined" is chosen ( this is the option that works for me, others might work, i havent tried.)

7. Plug your W850i into your PC and transfer your files over. I dont use the disk2phone, just via card reader.

voila!

This way works for me - hope it works for some of you!

Was about to add the exact same thing. Nice find! I wish I would have read it before searching the net. Works for me as well.

Forgot to mention for a whole album you can play them in windows media player hold down shift to selct all of the songs and do them all at once.

I just tried with my P990i. I only have one song on it at the moment which is:

Pink - I'm Not Dead - U & Ur U Hand.

I tested it by beaming a jpeg image of the album art to my P990i where it was sent to the message inbox. After opening the message i then renamed it to Pink - I'm Not Dead.

I saved it in the camera picture folder on the memory stick. Then i copied the image and put it in the music folder where the song was on the memory stick. When i went to play it it was there.

I am not sure whether this worked just because i only have the one song but i am going to try others and see if they attach to the right album.

Apologies if this has been tried but i couldn't find anything specific to the P990i and i am rubbish at searching lol.

Hope this helps some of you.

On the black w850i, only orange. I dont think its that important anyway (at least for me) coz it only stays lighted for a few seconds.

Posted by jack77777
you can adjust the backlight so that it can stay on for longer
well i think you can anyway

I Too have a different way of transferring album art!!

Step 1: Open up Sony Ericsson Mass Storage Device under my computer

Step 2: Open up the "Music Folder"

Step 3: Now Open up "My Music Folder" On your computer

Step 4: Click on "tools" - "folder Options" at the top of the window

Step 5: Select the View Tab then click on the show hidden files and folders button

Step 6: Now open each corresponding folder in "my music" and the "music" folder on your phone for each album in "my Music" the files "album art will now be visible, drag and drop each file for each album

Step 7: Disconnect phone and update music on phone and the album art should be displayed for each item you have transferred!!

Hope This Helps!!

Posted by A-w850i
nanu, what are the files named?

All my album art images are in "my music" not each folder. It may be because I'm on WMP11

Posted by Nanu
Have you gone into the tools to display hidden files and folders?

i too have wmp11 and all the jpegs are displayed in the "my music" Folder!! the files you will need are hidden within the actual album folder, they're thumbnails of varying sizes some large and some small i choose the 200x200mp or at least the largest!! the file names dont seem to have any reference to the album name with generic names being given such as

AlbumArt_{86219904-5B26-4D71-9462-0D10D5E49614}_Large.jpg

If under the views tab on the window and select thumbnails the artwork should be shown making it easier to see what it is you are after!!

if i add album art to just one of the songs in an album will the picture show up for all the songs in that album or just the song that i have added it to ?

Posted by Nanu
You should place the file in the album folder and it will show up for every song within that album!!

Posted by jack77777
ok , just tried this and it doesent work , neither does the media player solution and i dotn want itunes7 , any other way ?

Posted by Nanu
Have your updated the music files on your phone afterwards?

Posted by mobse
Thanks, crstacy, your WMP album art importing method works nicely (with the VAIO Memory Stick reader slot) in my case.

Cheers!

yes i created a folder on my w850i and placed a song and a pic of the album about 300x300 pixels and not bad qaulity and it didnt show lol

Posted by maccad
i just have it that windows media player sorts my music for me, to get track information updated if it hasn't done it already you just right click on the album and find album info. This will find all track names and album art etc.

If this has already been done you just drag the folder to your phone and it will display the album art. Alternatively if you want a picture to show up for that album put a picture in the folder and rename it folder.jpg and it should show up

Posted by jack77777
ive set it to retreive info from internet but still it doesent add album art lol

how do i right click on the album to retrieve info , it shows the option but its grey and i cant click on it

also just messed around with the internet settings and it connects to the guide etc but i still cant retreive album art and info

i thought i had it working but it seems not , now i have to rename my entire music collection , delete it all then put it back on my phone !

SONY ERICSSON PLZ SORT OUT A PROGRAM FOR ALBUM ART INSTEAD OF BEING LAZY !

@jack77777

Apologies My friend, whilst the method i described to you works perfectly with my W950i it is not the case with my P990i, for the p990i and presumably the w850i, for the p990i i had to rename the files (any name will do!) as the ones saved by wmp are system files which the phone wont recognise! so simply rename the file and save it as a jpeg and all should be fine!

to set wmp for automatic updates click on tools>>options>>Library and select
"retrieve additional information from the internet"

Posted by jack77777
ive set it to retrive info , i had it working at one point today but now it just shows the grey text where the options is

Posted by jack77777
omg its destroyed my whole music collection MEDIA PLAYER IS SH*T its messed up all my song so im having to find and download them , all you Buggers lol anyway im never ever trying this method again id rather not have album art thanks very much lol

OK, here's the deal with WMP (10) and album art.

- Find the album covers you need anywhere on the Internet
- Copy / find the folder with the album you want to add album art to on the hard disk
- Copy the album cover picture into the album folder (so now you have the image file and the mp3s in the same location)
- Open Windows Media Player
- Click on the Library tab
- Click on File / Add to Library/ Add Folder
- Locate your folder
- All the songs on the album are added to the library
- Press Ctrl+A on the keybord to select all items (if you want the same album art to be shown for all items in the folder)
- Right-click on your selection and choose the Advanced Tag Editor option
- Click on the Pictures tab
- Add the image file you want
- Click on Apply /OK
- Copy the album folder with mp3s and album art on Memory Stick

Album art should be shown in Walkman, as this successfully updates the tags, specifying the path / linking the image(s) to the songs.

This method, already described in this thread, works for me. Hopefully, it will work for everyone else wishing to add album art.

Posted by jack77777
mobse: ill try again tonight but only with one song as im not risking my songs being destryoyed again , wmp renmaed them so their all the same even after renmaing them they still showed up the same artist and album , lol isnt their just a program to add album art to a song but just does it ., if you get me ?

Posted by mobse
I've tried one freeware and one shareware album art adding solution, and they basically apply the same method as WMP.

For what I described above you don't need to rename the songs or update the tags via the Internet. This is, essentially an offline path specifying process that can work with any mp3 files and images and does not require an Internet connection.

The only thing that I don't like is that album art can be added to mp3 files only. I wish it could work with other formats, AAC+ in particular.

Posted by scottt
I see your all having fun with trying to add album art

Just got my P990i and had a bit of trouble but its really quite simple, just takes ages as you have to make a folder for each album, put all the songs from that album into the folder and put the album artwork in with it, takes a long time when you have like 100 albums you wanna put on.....

Posted by A-w850i
What did you name the file and what format did you use?

Posted by mobse
You can name any image file anything you want, as long as it gets associated with the folder and the mp3 files in it.

As for the resolution, it has to be small 300x300, 300x400 JPEG definitely works. I presume all other image formats supported by the phone would be OK.

Posted by jack77777
at the moment my w850i is in file transfer mode , so ill edit this post once i find out which firmware it is

Posted by jack77777
My firmware is: R1ED001

its unbranded and unlocked , is my firmwae the latest ?

Posted by Pandamonium
Just like to say thanks Scott for the guide. Worked prefectly for me, I found any residing problems with the album art working was to make sure every song I added was in an album, and that the same picture was applied to all of them. Thanks

Posted by Creak
The sortest way to display the album art on w850 is that to use the softwer called mp3tag. The phone can't show album arts bigger than 100kb.

thanks creak?
