completely dead K800

My K800 is suddenly dead for no reason. It worked when i changed to my new K610i, but when i tried to switch it on again an hour later it was dead. wont't turn on, won't charge. the diode blinks when i connect a charger, data cable or try to turn it on. this is the only life sign.

Any advice or similar problems?

Posted by BobaFett
Might be a simple flash solves the problem. U dont have to worry if u have warranty.

and so another dead k800,sorry for you pal, good luck with the replacement

right - erm...i had a blinkin' led problem with a t65 :S - not sure whether its atall the same - i know its not but!

right - as the t65 has a battery inside i opened it up and disconnected everything - e.g. no power to the board - so try taking the battery out, leaving it for a day and then power up again...probably won't work and it will need a reflash/change of phone by Sony Ericsson but - its worth the try, rather than all the hassle...and btw im not overly impressed from what everyones said about the k800i now...

If the battery goes completly empty it sometimes need to be charged over 1 houre before the screen starts up again.. tried that?

Posted by mckvakk
@bobafett
i was gonna try flashing it with wotanserver but the only reaction i got when plugging in the cable was a blinking lead

@sonyericssonman
The Phone was in use for about two weeks and the battery was allmost full when i switched it off.
What sucks is that if this had happened a couple of days earlier i could have gotten a new phone by DOA (if we go by the date on the reciept). now i'll have to wait 3-4 weeks for it to get fixed

Posted by bugsiiy
@korbindallis from my count, here on esato, are like 5 or more dead k800 already plus many more with problems,i'm trying to say that k800 is not reliable yet

Posted by drhunter
Not completey on topic but my k750i has done the same thing to me a few times. Works fine, switch it off, try to switch it on and it just doesn't respond - not even when powered from the mains. Give it a few hours and it starts to work again.
Mine did it when I went on holiday. Worked in England, turned it for flight to amsterdam, on to say i was halfway, off for flight to sweden. Tried to call my mate to say I'd arrived and... nope... had to use a payphone of all things

Posted by Kanj
Mines done the same, its completely gone dead, phoned sony and they said to return to one of there service centres took it down today have to wait 10days, they did say its under warranty so it would be free, just have to wait and see

Here's another dead K800i. White Screen of Death while updating RSS feeds. Took back to CPW for repair, who informed me that they are not able to take in this model for repair as yet, as their log-in system for repairs is not yet set up to accept the SE K800!!!!!!

And so, I'm stuck with a dead phone until CPW takes their repair thumbs out their *@+~s!!

Umm get them to replace it with a new one??? would be a start. Dont let them fob you off, get it replaced or demand a refund.

My K790i bought on 31st July died after 2 days. Its that "white screen of death thing". I returned it and have not accepted the free replacement. Frankly, IMO, this kind of problem/defect is unacceptable.

I suspect you've already tried this, but just in case you haven't, try removing the battery for a few minutes, re-inserting it and try powering it on, see if that makes any difference. It's worked for me a few times!

Posted by darth.paul
I've emailed their o2 at CPW cust service dept, and advised them I want the problem sorted in 24 hours or to canx the contract as they've sold me goods not fit for their purpose. Just wait and see......

And you're dead right ac, this white screen of death really is completely unacceptable. It's not a silly little bug, it's a major malfunction.

SE need to sort their quality control out. I've had SE phones since the T68i, but my experiences with the W900 and now the K800 white screen means I'll be looking at, God forbid, Nokia or Moto next year

My brand new K800 died last night after less than 6 hours!!!

I powered it down, then tried to turn it back on again 10 mins later and nothing, just a dead handset. Only minimal sign of life is a small red light inside the InfraRed port when I press the on button for the handset.

Damn, what is it with the K800, all these dead handsets!
I had a k750 for a year, that was almost trouble free - apart from the terrible dust collection device called a "joystick". Had to have mine cleaned twice.

I love the handsets and the menus, etc., but I'm really starting to consider Samsung D900 or even god forbid a Nokia N73!
I'll be going in to the O2 store tomorrow for a swap.

BTW - are all the dead handsets from O2? Is there a pattern emerging?

S.

Update:
Just to clarify, the K800i had been working fine earlier in the day. I had not installed anything at all in it. It was brand new from O2.
I tried out the camera, some of the games, stuff like that.
I was using a normal non-3G SIM because O2 had run out of the 3G sims and were due to give me one next week.
I used the standard/original charger delivered with the phone.
The mobile seemed fine. I turned it off. Took the battery out for a minute or so. Put the battery back in and then turned phone on. It never restarted. The screen stays black (not white).

Did anyone else have any similarities, e.g. are all the bad phones from O2? Did you all have a non-3G sim card?

Hehe looks like my k800i has fallen down with the same problems in here, its been getting slower and slower and suffered a few white screen of deaths. But last night, went to take out my sim card to put in my p990i and put another sim in the k800i. Pressed the power button and it just wouldnt turn on. So took out battery and left it for a few few mins but again nothing. When i plugged the phone into the charger which was connected to the mains, i found the infra red sensor light blinking on and off but yet no sign of life.
Which is freaking great as i had quite a few text messages that i needed to keep and now i cant turn the phone to try and recover them.

Anyways emailed the guy i bought it from on ebay and he told me to try and plug it in the charger when plugged into the mains but i just emailed him to tell him that no it doesnt work.
Shame really as i really liked this phone for the camera capability, im just hoping that the guy i bought it from exchanges it for a brand new model asap.

So, has anyone got charts for the chances of getting a faulty K800?? I wouldn't mind knowing how often people get K800/K790s that don't start or have major defects/problems xD

My k800i died yesterday. white display, tried to restart but nothing happens.

Is it possible to avoid this mishap if we knew of any commonalities between the users who have experienced the 'death' of their k800?

This is not to blame the users but just trying to find out if we can determine the cause aside from an obvious manufacturing defect. What were you doing? some examples: Flashed firmware with wotan, installed/played untested Java apps/games/utilities (ex. torch for K800), using aftermarket chargers, using 512mb M2 vs 1GB or vice versa, etc.

Posted by aikelo
mine was unbranded and no hacks of anykind. When downloading an mms, white screen of death hit my k800. Trie
d to restart but itīs been dead since then. My friends k800 died when he was in the middle of a call. He will not get a new one, until the realese a new firmware.

Well this morning i received my new k800i and im hoping this one will not break like my last one. So far so good though, although i still have the broken one sitting in my room...i guess the guys i bought it from dont want it back so will send it off to a SE repair centre and get them to fix it then possibly sell it for a bit of a profit

Posted by eBopBob
I must say that this sounds quite worrying. It would certainly seem as if SE should have delayed the release of the K800i by another month or two at least to sort out all of these problems.

Yes well, mine "died" after turning the phone off after installing Opera Mini which caused a java fault, it did turn itself on though, but some days later it died again, and this it was fatal, so I sent it back to the shop, now im waiting for my second K800i...

Mine died last week...pressing the power button just made the IR LED blink 5 times, nothing more. It's in repair with CPW right now, hopefully I'll have it back next week, I've been reduced to a nokia 1101 right now, it's depressing.

Same thing happened to me in same situation. Phone froze for hours, showing white screen/normal screen but totally unresponsive/doing spontaneous restarts. It eventually recovered though and went back to normal. I haven't touched RSS since that, and won't try to again until a firmware update has been released.

I turned mine off took out the battery and changed the sim and it refused to turn on.

Which is what exactly happened to my other k800i, just hope it doesnt happen with this one. Love the phone but if its going to die every so often then i cant see the point of having one to be honest.

I had a similar problem - woke up one morning to see the white screen of death, and every time i tried to turn it on after taking the battery out it re-appeared.

I ended up leaving the thing on for a day, until it went off, then left it plugged in overnight and it worked fine....

But,every time i go into the games or applications folder it says "empty folder" - there were definitely things in there and i thought that the pre-installed apps you couldn't delete? I don't know why it's happened! Does anyone have a link for the games and apps that came pre-installed on the phone bya any chance, or even a solution to regain then?

I think WSOD migh happen if you:
1. Take out the battery in a hurry before the system finishes restoring,e.g. changing SIM Card without a longer waiting for it to completely and safely shut down. You should wait at least 1 min.
2. pull out charger whilst recharging in a sudden..
3. forget to safely remove hardware in PC connection.
To avoid WSOD, regularly take out the battery for some time.

Posted by eBopBob
I'm curious... has anyone been in contact with SE, or has SE said anything regarding the WSOD? As to me is seems rather peculiar for the SE flagship model to have so many problems, still none of which have been resolved.

good tips, aremaboy.

im on my second handset, first one didnt charge this one is showing the same symptoms as your one just the blinking led!! any solutions?

I've had white screen on many of my phones. The trick is to let the phone restart itself. DO NOT switch it off. It takes about a minute for the phone to restart to the main screen. Hope this helps.

that's right, the same thing happened to me. I was shocked when it first happened and didn't do anything, then it fix by itself.

Mine has also died

One night it went to a white screen, then would kinda re-boot itself. It did this many times, and then appeared to be fixed. Phew.
So I went to sleep and when I woke up the phone was off and won't come on at all.

I bought my phone on ebay, and the (power) user is no longer registered, so I'm screwed.

Posted by ghostfreak
You could maybe try a firmware and EROM update and see if that helps

Posted by Seirrah
I need a special cable for that don't I?

It's better than having no phone at all! I've posted on a similar thread about how my K800i got the white screen of death just yesterday. It's pathetic really. Happened to my friend also who bought his a few months ago. Loadza peeps on esato have claimed they've had it too. If only this forum could do polls...

Posted by camp_ben
Hi, I've had a SE K800i for about 6 months now, few weeks ago it startedt the good old white screen of death, although would normally fix itself! Last week it white screened and wouldn't restart, I resigned myself to the fact it was dead, took out my sim and merrily started using my old K750i again... A day later the K800i was awake and working again...

BUT... it died again a few hours ago, restarts fine, but the menu seem to be too far up (i.e. is off the screen), the only options I have are 'select' and 'info' displayed at the top of the screen... if i click 'select' (I think I'm answering that I want to start in normal mode, but can't see the option) I can type my pin, the 'select' button at the top then changes to 'ok' and the phone lets me in... only problem is... I have no menus, can't call etc. etc.

Any ideas, or have I got the ordeal of O2 returns to go though

Ta, Ben.

Mine and my friend K800i are dead too. Mine was freeze when playing games, and I turn it off, and never come back on, and the IR flashing when I try to turn on. And mine friend K800i dead when he want to switch SIM card, and never back on. Same flashing IR. My friend send his phone over to SE service center in USA, and they said they cannot fix it, they offer a replacement but not gonna be the same model, too bad my friend didn't check his email, so SE send his phone back without replacement. And my phone, I did dismatle the whole phone, I disconnect everything that can be disconnect from the main board for an hour or so, and put back together, and still wont power up, and the IR still flashing when I try to turn on. So.. I just gonna keep my phone until SE do something.

Posted by baconnugget
all you need to do is flash the erom using wotonserver if you had the blinky red light! when my died it was when i took out the charger too fast it wouldnt turn back on.

Posted by aremaboy
Old EROM again?...but how come? Mine works just all right despite my old R13A011..I plug/ unplug charger, change SIM, run out battery, plug/unplug USB data cable, and NOT EVEN a WSOD..thanks God then. Yes, SESC or Wotan Server is the way out.

Posted by glorfingal
Aremaboy and me most one of the few. I've had my silver k800
since O2 UK released it and it's not missed a beat at all. No
freezes, no WSOD, no dropped calls - nothing !!!

I have to admit to wotaning it from the O2 original as soon as I
could - maybe that's what saved it !!!

Posted by Alex86
a friend of mine has a dead k800,it won't turn on...xs++ ,se tool, wotan client cannot see the phone ; tried with the battery charged same thing ,what can it be?

Posted by aremaboy
Hardware problem. Only SESC can fix it.

Sorry to bump this thread from the dead, but I figured it's better to bump it than to start a whole new thread.

During a road trip, I turned my phone off to charge it. After fully charging it with a car charger, I turned the phone on only to discover what I now know as the White Screen of Death.

While the phone made its efforts to startup, the switch-over between the white and black screen continued. I was annoyed by this so I popped the battery out. Put it back in and the WSoD is still there. I repeated this step numerous times before it actually shut down on it. The only sign of its life was the red infrared light.

After searching around this forum and the net to find a solution to the problem, I gave up and sent the phone in for a 'grey-market' or 'out of warranty' claim. I was given a RMA number and along with a $100 inspection and repair fee + shipping one way, SE of USA was able to resolve the issue by upgrading the software. I was without the phone for 4 weeks. I paid $350 10 months ago and with the additional $120 (including shipping), my k800i is now a $470 USD phone. Yay. I usually upgrade phones annually, but I guess I'll keep this one a year longer...if it lasts.

The phone has been good so far (3 weeks since the repair) and I hope it to last. If anybody finds a way to prevent the WSoD, please advise!

What's your EROM and CID?

I've heard that older EROMs are prone to the WSoD. Mine's a R3A022, and I haven't had that problem yet *TOUCH WOOD!*, and I've been turning it off and on heaps recently, cuz I've been diving deep into my K800i's file system lol.

Well what do you know! I was hoping to never visit this thread again, but I'm disappointed to say it came so soon. At least it's not completely dead this time. I bought a credit on wotanserver.com as few have advised to do. However, wotanserver is constantly 'waiting.......' for my phone to connect. I've tried 'C' and holding '2,5' prior to plugging in the USB cord. Nothing. My computer says they spotted a new USB connection and wants me to go through the wizard to install its drivers so I'm assuming that there is connection between my phone and the computer. Making a visit to the apple store today... :sigh:
