Well here i have two memory sticks. They are both 2GB. One i have been using in my PSP for not even two weeks. Already the casing is splitting and the lettering is coming off. Also it seems a very tight fit in both my phone (k750) and the psp. The memory stick i have been using is from a UK seller.
I have not opened the other memory stick as it is not mine. Though this memory stick came from Hong Kong.
Now i know you must be thinking the Hong Kong one is fake but i think it is the other way around. I have taken many pictures to try and show you.
the one on the left is from Hong Kong
again the one on the left is the Hong Kong one. writing is bolder
the one above is the UK one, in the packaging is the Hong Kong one. Notice the wearing on the UK one?
here you can see the fading and splitting
UK one
the one on top is the Hong Kong one. notice the bolder colours and the different icons?
again the one on top is the Hong Kong one
here is a picture of the Hong Kong one's Sony sticker
and the one from the UK

to be honest, I have no idea, but I did recall a similar thread which may or may not add some info for you so take a read there
Fake Memory Sticks ?
Posted by vanquish
If it works its not?
Posted by Coxy
Yes it works, but that doesnt mean it is fake does it?
Posted by vanquish
if it works ... its good?

still dont get ya. whatever.

Decided to take out the Hong Kong memory stick to see if there was a difference. Firstly i noticed the one from Hong Kong has stickers in the pack for labels, the UK one didnt. Also the Hong Kong one looks almost like the lettering is on a sticker, but not a sticker in the way that you can feel an edge. Also in the PSP it fits, and it isnt a tight fit. Finally all the lettering seems to be a lot further to the right than on the UK one.
Could anyone with a 1gb high speed card tell me if their "real" sony card has a sort of sticker on or not? Thanks
again the one on the left is the Hong Kong one. you can just make out the sort of label/sticker i taking about.

hmmm
to sum up what i learned about real and fake, the real ones have the text on the back engraved instead of just printed on. secondly, the package is stuck together better than the 6 glue spots. from the looks of it, they look fake to me.
this will help a lot, read this thread about it
i just read it myself today

I dont think they r fake. There are only 2 or 3 manufacturers that produce the MSDP sticks: SONY,SANDISK(also producing the same sticks on which Sony puts its name-they r the same) and I guess Lexar but not sure about this 1.So they r produced in different locations with various materials so its normal to have diff'rences. As long as it works why worry?U might take into consideration that u have too much free time on ur hands.I wish I could notice this sort of stuff:)
Posted by vanquish
I mean, it doesnt look fake? Its probably just an HK version. If youre worried take it back, if you can. If you cant, and it works live with it?
Posted by Coxy
So are you guys saying these are basically different versions? Well i dont think Sony would make different versions. Anyway its going back today and a full refund is heading my way! The guy also told me it was infact from a Hong Kong supplier.

As some ppl say it could be a different manufacturer, however I really don’t know about that. Who knows?, with all sorts of counterfeit products coming out it each day this might well be another fake. That holographic sticker and the rest of the things look a bit suspicious.
Well…. it will work for now but if it is really a fake then it won’t for long. I mean after all, even the fakes ones have to work at least for a while right ? cos otherwise they cant sell if they don’t work at all. If you can get it changed then I suggest you do that. I could be wrong here, but why take the risk ?
Posted by JwY
did you guys even look at my link?
there are fakes going around.
Posted by S4k1s
did u get any adapters with the cards?
Posted by S4k1s
also can u take a picture of the back of the cards zoomed @the text?
I looked thru the threads posted here .. and by the looks of it .. both your MSPD cards are fake ... at least the UK one looks really fake
a guy posted in a thread
Quote: |
they are not durable at all.. when mine came.. it worked completely fine for the first 2 days.. then.. all the text at the back starts to come off.. and the card occasionally doesn' read on the PSP and hangs right in the middle of the movie.. and i had to rub it w/ fingers and putting it in and out MANY times before it works again.. then.. after 2 days.. it just completely died# |

i read somewhere that the packaging with PSP on them do not come with the adaptor?
Posted by mad4mobiles
it could be... that the hong kong one is a very very very good copy and the uk on is a normal sony one making the copy the better one lol!!

Posted by josh_watson
I'd say the same - I had a genuine UK sony one (bought from scan computers, so it should have been genuine!) - it didn't have a sticker on. One of my friends had one that I thought was fake. It was identical to mine, except the labelling was clearer, and it was all on stickers (like the HK one). This was a cheap eBay memory card.
So either the HK ones have stickers on, or fake ones have stickers on.
Either way, my genuine memory card fried itself, so I returned it and got a SanDisk one instead.

they're certainly different!
look at the one on the left in the 2nd last picture, the 2gb arrow is on the slant yet on the other one it is well away from the slant, and for some reason one of them is smaller!
Posted by drljames
check the packaging in my local Maplins. And all the 1GB sony sticks are in the 6 glue spot type packaging. Fake? Or just another type of packaging?
Posted by JwY
all the real ones i have seen are glued in complete streaks
Posted by sucka6
Yeah I bought a fake one of ebay. 1st clue is it doesnt fit into memory card slot correctly. You can just close the door and it will read ok but it pops back out sometimes. Otherwise it would appear it works ok. Also the pictures I saw of the real ones sold in Japan which mine is a copy of has 2 seals at the top also as well as seals going down the side. This one has 6 flimsy seals going down the side. Otherwise the packaging looks almost perfect although its hard to compare to pictures. I'm returning because if I just take a replacement which fits correctly it might still fail in a couple weeks.

Well I have the exact same problem as you (Coxy). Try testing the speeds with a memory card reader. The one on the left should work at high speed and the one on the right is just a normal one, at least that's what happened for me.
Posted by baste07
im going too look to at mine. i think its fake
Posted by baste07
mine looks like the HK one.

To be honest people, id like to give a reassuring bit of advice saying which is which, but i cannot.
I have various memory sticks, and i know none of them are fake because they either came from the manufacturers packaged with my phones (and PSP), or i bought them from repuatable dealers in the UK which are certain not to use fake products (or at least i hope so).

I'll start off with my 64mb Sony Duo stick which came with my K750i. The text on the front of the memory stick appears to be marked individually (unlike the Sony HK memory stick in Coxy's picture, whereby the text on the front of the stick appears to be printed on either a sticker, or as an entire picture). On the rear, the writing is engraved into the plastic.
The 32mb Sony Duo stick which came with my PSP is different. Whilst the print on the front is marked individually, on the rear the writing is NOT engraved into the plastic.
There we have 2 official UK sony products, which differ on the rear, one is engraved, the other is simply printed
I also have two Sandisk 512mb Duo sticks. Both are identical, both have the writing on the front of the stick printed individually. On the rear, both have their text printed. Both sticks are also very much similar in the grain of the plastic in comparison to the Sony sticks i have.
The difference is, the two 512mb Sandisk sticks are a sort of two-tone plastic, the rear of the memory stick is made from a much brighter blue than the top.
I also have a 1GB Sandisk duo stick. This is where it gets complicated. The stick has individually printed text on both sides, just like the Sony and Sandisk duos, however, the stick is much more faded than the 512mb Sandisk duos, and the plastic is noticably less grained- it has less texture and is much smoother to the touch.
There is also another difference. Of the Sandisk duo sticks i have, i also have 3 adaptors (to turn the Duo into a full sized memory stick). Two of the adaptors are identical in all ways, one of them has differently coloured text on it, its a much darker toned blue than the others. I cannot remember which adaptor came with which Sandisk duo stick. I also have a Sony adaptor, but nothing else to compare it to.
Ive no doubt they're all official Sony or Sandisk products (they all work perfectly and fit perfectly, they all came packaged perfectly etc), the entire point of this post im making is, is that there is the possibility of manufacturing differences depending on all sorts of variables. When was the stick made, which batch it came from, which factory made it, all sorts. I dont think anyone can offer conclusive facts unless their memory stick is obviously fake simply because it does not fit the device its meant to be used in.
Bah !

Both of the memory sticks in the picture, were infact fake.
So watch out guys!
Posted by baste07
so how did you know they were both fakes?
Posted by johny_dmonic
it's the packaging i think..it's 6 dot seals and not long rectangular seals..i myself bought a fake mspd once.. >_>
Posted by Coxy
The one from the UK was originally from HK anyway, it stopped working after a while, and the letters wore off.
Posted by baste07
it stopped working that why its fake? doesn't it have soemthing to do with how much it ws used? i think fakes.. genuine can stop working for some reason. not really a solid basis for saying that its fake
Posted by Nitro Fan
I have now checked and it seems all my duo pro cards are originals, but I now think my phone may be a fake it works perfectly but I am now worrying how can I check

Posted by kabukijep
im 90% the HK one's a fake. Ive seen too much fake stuff going around here where i live- the hologram, the size and the print quality on the packaging itself; reading through your original posts felt like you were trying to check who can tell which one's fake and which ones can be easily fooled

Posted by baste07
only 90%... then you can yourself can be fooled.
Posted by kabukijep
well yeah. you can only be so sure when all you have are pictures
Posted by Simon N
Yeh I too think my k750i is a fake...the joystick stopped working so it must be fake eh!
I got given a 1gb card as the guy who had it said he didnt want a fake card...it works for me and fits just fine. I personally do not care if its fake or not since it does the job.
However if i paid for it....I would be a bit P****d off
Posted by baste07
yeah if its working. even if its replicate take it.

Just to finally clear things up with my cards. Both cards were very similar, that is evident. The packaging is similar, the icons arranged differently perhaps and that is almost it. Both cards started to split open after perhaps just six "ins and outs" of a phone, PSP, card reader. The writing also started to wear off after this period of time. Another thing is that the size of available memory decreased everytime I put it in and took it out of a device. Then they stopped working.
Apparently any Sony memory card that has the PSP icon on the top right, with japanese writing underneath it is fake. My new genuine 2GB Sony memory stick pro duo is perfectly fine. It came from Amsterdam airport. It has French writing under the PSP icon and under the English writing. It is not "high speed" either. The writing does seem to be on "labels" but looks fine. Due to the number of times its been in and out of my devices, the writing on the back as worn off. The available space has been consistant and not dropped at all. The front writing has not worn off, nor has the card split open. The packaging also states it has a 5 year warranty and many little booklets. Also on the back of the packaging there is a little bit where you can rip open the plastic, quite like that on a tookbrush.

Just got mine from EBAY and according to research i've done it's also fake. I still didn't open it and don't want to. I want this bustard will give my money back. Anyway... i have researched all sellers that sells 2GB cards and all of the exept maybe 1 are FAKES.
Bottom line DON'T BUY THIS CARD ON EBAY TO SAVE SOME $$$.
Cheers.

you can tell by the way tis packaged, if its sealed with them circle things with glue its fake it its genuine its sealed with a paper clip shape
Posted by GSMGuy
I was under the impression that Sony only offer a 1 year warranty on these cards, so therefore if it says 5 year warranty on the pack or in the ad, surely it's a fake?

Its hard to spot a fake

I just stumbbled upon this thread, but i'm glad i did. I bought a 1gb MemStickProDuo on eBay a few months ago in order to put videos on to use with my PSP. After reading everything that has been put here it would appear that i also have a fake. The strange thing is that i have only just opened it as a result of reading this thread and to my surprise i found that mine was supplied with some little sticky labels that allow you to write on them in order to know waht is on the card, guess what? The sticky lables are too long to put on the memory stick!!!! S**t!!!

uk one is fake i send u a pic of a fake one n realy one later

i've used it in my card reader and it seems ok!

H m m m soooooooooo many FAKE memory sticks around. It's kinda difficult really to determine FAKE memory cards that originate from China
