I have, however, to totally disagree with the suggestion of having free avatars for everyone... I am sorry but I have seen far too many forums that make me because of amazing number of huge, moving and tilting and signing avatars that make it impossible to enjoy a topic.
I might be "old fashioned" but I like having my phone as my avatar and a proper, sober forum.

Well, having fun is also part of Esato, but please don't turn this place into some sort of Disney Land or Las Vegas style forum...

Cheers

I hardly think personal avatars would turn Esato into a 'Las Vegas' style forum! There is enough tosh and rubbish posted to do that! This is a mobile phone forum, not a Chelsea club.

Personal avatars are very feasible, just put sensible restriction on their use e.g. limit them to a certain size.

on the other hand, remembering that is the main focus here, limiting avatars to phones gives the new person visiting the site for the first time and browsing the forums a better impression that Esato is a little more serious forum than others

... at least until they see some of the threads!

Seriously though, I really don't think it matters to any great extent. Personal avatars would help to differentiate members from the crowd, let us stand out a little bit more. People who wanted to still use a SE avatar would be free to do so.

I always took it as given that most of the membership would be in support of personal avatars, and assumed their absence was due to bandwidth/webspace, which probably shows how much I understand about these things!

But having seen it implemented on most other forums, especially those the size of Esato, I guess it is just another Unsolved Esato Mystery..

However, I do agree that it would be sensible to limit the "special effects", as I have seen the Las Vegas effect, of which you speak, and it is annoying...not to mention epilepsy-inducing!

@dave_uk

Nothing wrong with putting a sensible limit on personal avatars, it would keep the vulgarity factor down.

Personal avatars would be jolly nice, let people express themselves a little.

@fatreg

You could always use a picture of all your mobiles.

even if we don't go to the extent of "free range" personal avatars, i don't see why the current library can't be expanded a bit to inlude things like the CAR-100, the gamepad, or headseats, and a wider variety of colours on existing phones (e.g. all the exchangeable covers for the z-series handsets).
