Seeing that there networks will be introducing 3G and have introduced EDGE they might as well make GPRS to the poor PAYG subscribers who actually subsidize contract subscribers.

@brix25. Good point. Pay as u go subscibers usually constitute the bulk of ppl on any network. Dosnt sound fair to keep GPRS away from them.

Haven't posted in a while because MTN suspended it's free GPRS offering and now I have to do this from an internet cafe.

What's been happening in South Africa well, this past weekend I've seen ads in the papers welcoming Vodacom subscribers to the global Vodafone network...the first time I see the Vodafone brand being advertised in South Africa...

Vodacom is owned by the South African fixed line monopoly Telkom with Vodafone owning about 35% of shares in the company...Don't know whether Vodafone will be increasing their stake or whether the local company will just be adopting the corporate indentity of it's larger sibling which is entrenched in GSM markets around the world.

I've sent off questions to the Vodacom people and should get a reply sometime this week...Will keep you updated on my findings.

Another bit of news, maybe not quite...went to a shop the other day and discovered that a brand new K700( including sim card) was retailing for R2800...to think that two months ago somone offered me the phone for R4500...by this rate I'll just have to wait until the Christmas holidays are over to get my self cheap K700 which should cost in the region of R2200...damn, life is too good.

Hi Coolapostle.

I haven't used GPRS since they started charging for it but from what I heard it's overpriced and people have been turned off and would rather use the internet if they wanted information.

BTW I hope you guys aint taking the result of the football too badly. South Africans have been suffering for 10 years at the hands of the Super Eagles.

@brix. Football, schmidt! I have no problems with the results, but then I am not the average Nigerian (I'm not into football that much) A lot of Nigerians ARE taking it badly. Areafada at the Proudly Nigerian thread says he abandoned d bedroom to his wife and daughter after we lost d match , and slept in d sitting room. Hear! Hear!!

Craig, if you're on MTN GPRS and using one of the EDGE-capable handsets availabe (Nokia 6230 all I can think of) then you should be able to have faster downloads...if you need more clarity just call those guys at MTN 173 they're always willing to help.

BTW saw that their revenues in Nigeria had slowed down because of they're expanding their network in that country.

So some bird whispered in my ear that Vodacom has gone live with 3G in all the big cities. Last week MTN said they would probably be launching 3G by the middle of next year( I think that will depend on the availability of handsets and the enthusiasm by users).

Vodacom has made a scoop by securing Vodafone Live content for it's subscribers...so now South Africans with 3G phone will be able to catch English Premierships highlights hours after the games have finished.
