the only difference is that the 3390 uses 1900mhz, which is the only GSM band in the US
but the T68 is already tri-band, what else would make the t68i different from original t68?

this is an example. The nokia 3310 is called 3390 in the USA. so it might be the same idea

T68 is a tri-band and itīs name is T68m, the M stands for Mobile around the world.
M is just for the tri-band.
T68i, the I stand for the new SW in the :se: T68m

I donīt wanīt to alarm anyone, but I work in a mobile store here in Portugal I some days ago the Ericsson sales representative guy was there and he said that the T68i is a reality, and heīs gonna have the MMS sotware and improved hardware! As for the software upgrade for preavious T68 owners itīs still a rumour only and heīs not even sure if that will come out because he said that the T68i will have the new software because itīs hardware prepared! I of couse told him that that sucks and if the MMS software donīt came out for the old T68 I will sell my phone and buy 7650! BLUFF but I hope Ericsson think twice before neglecting the old T68 clients!
If you have diferent info share it!

1900MHz is the only current GSM band in the US, but the 850MHz band will soon be used by Cingular and AT&T. The new band will be used to replace the TDMA (D-AMPS) networks, since there isn't enough frequences free on the 1900MHz band to replace the entire TDMA fleet (and the operators have paid for the 850MHz band already). The rumour is that all TDMA users in these networs will get a new GSM-phone for free to make it possible to close the TDMA-networks.
There are no current phones that support the 850MHz band, but at least Nokia has promised to develop 850MHz phones (this is in the contract they've written with AT&T). These phones might support the 1900MHz band, but propably not the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands...
Depending on timing of the introduction, it might also be that the new phones support 3G instead of 1900MHz, or (as I wrote above) that they only support 850MHz.
